By any measure the season past was a great success. On the field we captured two premierships in the juniors and a further three teams made the semi-finals whilst in the seniors we also made it to the semis in two grades. After some 11 seasons in the wilderness our first grade team finally made the semis and although beaten, gave a great account of themselves in a tight match. Congratulations should also go to the seventh grade team who performed very well also to go out in the semi-finals with some key personnel missing at the crucial time. Our second grade had a mixed season but were severely affected by a seemingly high level of player turnover throughout the season whilst our father and son team, eighth grade, were so close but yet so far. Overall we had a successful senior season and I would like to thank Dave Younan from the Royal Hotel for his support of our senior cricket again this season. Also a big thanks to Robbie Morgan for his outstanding skills in preparing the Lomatia Park wicket, which was a great strip all season. The juniors were great. Congratulations to our premiership winning U11 and U13 teams capping off a great season by both teams. Also we acknowledge the U15, U14-1 and U12 teams for making the semis and we also thank the players in our U14-2, U10 and U8 teams for a job well done. I wish to thank Adam Thomas and all of the mums and dads who conducted our “Have-A-Go” nursery and I hope that we may see some budding Ricky Pontings emerge through our junior ranks in years to come. My thanks also go to all of the selfless people who gave willingly of their time to coach, manage, score and whatever else to support our kids in this junior cricket season. Without your loyalty to this club and to your kids we would have no teams at all! Our committee, your committee, have been simply great this year and it is a real pleasure to preside over this terrific group of people. I won’t mention them individually, but the dedication of the current committee and their efficiency within the tasks that they have to complete is remarkable. The members of this club are indeed fortunate: the stewardship of this club is in very good hands. Before closing this report I wish to acknowledge and thank our many and varied sponsors and also wish to acknowledge that we are slowly building a great tradition with our “ Back to Springwood Day”, which is growing into an outstanding annual event. And so, we are half way through this decade and this club has enjoyed another successful season. We have won premierships, have a good participation rate and we are financially sound. The worst thing we can do is sit back and accept this success. Now is the time to build on success by working as hard as possible. I therefore encourage everyone to give strong consideration to standing for various positions on the committee. We don’t have all the answers and we certainly don’t pretend that we can be all things to all people, but we need fresh input from new faces. Peter Filmer 3 PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS SENIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR Daniel Paterson and Paul Petterson The Senior Player of the Year is awarded to the player deemed to have achieved the most outstanding and consistent on field results during the season. This is the first time in the history of the award that joint winners have been selected, simply because it was too difficult to separate the achievements of these two young men. Daniel Paterson was the spearhead of the seventh grade team, driving them towards their first ever semi-final berth. He claimed 55 wickets at an average of 6.00 in the 2004-05 season, with three eight wicket hauls the highlights of his year. He also chipped in with 167 valuable runs. Paul Petterson scored 320 runs in first grade at an average of almost 27 and took 20 wickets at an average under 15, including four crucial wickets in the side’s agonising semi-final loss. His standing in the Nepean cricket community was evidenced by his selection as captain of the U23 Telegraph Shield team for 2004-05. This perpetual trophy is awarded in recognition to the hard work and dedication Ron gave to this club during his time at Springwood. If you look in the record book of the 2004-05 season, it’ll tell you Dave Williams contribution was 220 runs and 10 dismissals in first grade. Anyone associated with the club, and specifically its first grade team, will tell you that doesn’t even begin to describe his importance. His experience helped the young Springwood side reach the first grade semi-finals for the first time in 12 seasons. When bowlers needed a kick up the backside it inevitably came from Dave, and often followed with a flurry of wickets. He also gave Adam Thomas invaluable assistance with the Friday afternoon Have-A-Go sessions for 4-8 year olds, along with team mate Peter Crouch. Dave is a valuable and respected club member, whose leadership is a big part of the current success. SENIOR CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR HONOUR ROLL 2003-2004 WALLY MOUBARAK 4 PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com THE WALLY PHILLIPS MEMORIAL SHIELD Brad Filmer (Man of the match Back to Springwood Day) Kieran Doyle, with a gritty 66, and Paul Hameister, with 4-37 from his 10 overs, might have been in with a shot of the Wally Phillips Memorial Shield were it not for Brad Filmer’s explosive 73 from 46 balls that catapulted Springwood to victory. On an oppressively hot day at Lomatia Park, Brad strode to the wicket at 1-11 and departed just 16 overs later with the home side comfortable at 2-112. His innings included 10 fours and two sixes, hit off successive balls. Such was the toll the knock took on his mind and body, Brad is unable to remember much of his innings, while the crowd of more than 100 is unlikely to ever forget it. Springwood amassed 231 from 43 overs, then bowled Emu Plains out for 157 to take its record on Back to Springwood Day to two wins and no losses.
