PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to present this report for our club for season 2004-05.

By any measure the season past was a great success. On the field we captured two premierships in the juniors and a further three teams made the semi-finals whilst in the seniors we also made it to the semis in two grades.

After some 11 seasons in the wilderness our first grade team finally made the semis and although beaten, gave a great account of themselves in a tight match. Congratulations should also go to the seventh grade team who performed very well also to go out in the semi-finals with some key personnel missing at the crucial time. Our second grade had a mixed season but were severely affected by a seemingly high level of player turnover throughout the season whilst our father and son team, eighth grade, were so close but yet so far. Overall we had a successful senior season and I would like to thank Dave Younan from the Royal Hotel for his support of our senior cricket again this season. Also a big thanks to Robbie Morgan for his outstanding skills in preparing the Lomatia Park , which was a great strip all season.

The juniors were great. Congratulations to our premiership winning U11 and U13 teams capping off a great season by both teams. Also we acknowledge the U15, U14-1 and U12 teams for making the semis and we also thank the players in our U14-2, U10 and U8 teams for a job well done. I wish to thank Adam Thomas and all of the mums and dads who conducted our “Have-A-Go” nursery and I hope that we may see some budding Ricky Pontings emerge through our junior ranks in years to come.

My thanks also go to all of the selfless people who gave willingly of their time to coach, manage, score and whatever else to support our kids in this junior cricket season. Without your loyalty to this club and to your kids we would have no teams at all!

Our committee, your committee, have been simply great this year and it is a real pleasure to preside over this terrific group of people. I won’t mention them individually, but the dedication of the current committee and their efficiency within the tasks that they have to complete is remarkable. The members of this club are indeed fortunate: the stewardship of this club is in very good hands.

Before closing this report I wish to acknowledge and thank our many and varied sponsors and also wish to acknowledge that we are slowly building a great tradition with our “ Back to Springwood Day”, which is growing into an outstanding annual event.

And so, we are half way through this decade and this club has enjoyed another successful season. We have won premierships, have a good participation rate and we are financially sound. The worst thing we can do is sit back and accept this success.

Now is the time to build on success by working as hard as possible. I therefore encourage everyone to give strong consideration to standing for various positions on the committee. We don’t have all the answers and we certainly don’t pretend that we can be all things to all people, but we need fresh input from new faces.

SENIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR Daniel Paterson and Paul Petterson

The Senior Player of the Year is awarded to the player deemed to have achieved the most outstanding and consistent on field results during the season. This is the first time in the history of the award that joint winners have been selected, simply because it was too difficult to separate the achievements of these two young men. Daniel Paterson was the spearhead of the seventh grade team, driving them towards their first ever semi-final berth. He claimed 55 at an average of 6.00 in the 2004-05 season, with three eight wicket hauls the highlights of his year. He also chipped in with 167 valuable runs. Paul Petterson scored 320 runs in first grade at an average of almost 27 and took 20 wickets at an average under 15, including four crucial wickets in the side’s agonising semi-final loss. His standing in the Nepean cricket community was evidenced by his selection as captain of the U23 Telegraph Shield team for 2004-05.

THE RON ADAMSON TROPHY Dave Williams (Senior Clubman of the Year)

Life member Ron Adamson was president of Springwood Cricket Club for more than 25 years, and passed away in 2004. This perpetual trophy is awarded in recognition to the hard work and dedication Ron gave to this club during his time at Springwood. If you look in the record book of the 2004-05 season, it’ll tell you Dave Williams contribution was 220 runs and 10 dismissals in first grade. Anyone associated with the club, and specifically its first grade team, will tell you that doesn’t even begin to describe his importance. His experience helped the young Springwood side reach the first grade semi-finals for the first time in 12 seasons. When bowlers needed a kick up the backside it inevitably came from Dave, and often followed with a flurry of wickets. He also gave Adam Thomas invaluable assistance with the Friday afternoon Have-A-Go sessions for 4-8 year olds, along with team mate Peter Crouch. Dave is a valuable and respected club member, whose leadership is a big part of the current success.

Kieran Doyle, with a gritty 66, and Paul Hameister, with 4-37 from his 10 overs, might have been in with a shot of the Wally Phillips Memorial Shield were it not for Brad Filmer’s explosive 73 from 46 balls that catapulted Springwood to victory. On an oppressively hot day at Lomatia Park, Brad strode to the wicket at 1-11 and departed just 16 overs later with the home side comfortable at 2-112. His innings included 10 fours and two sixes, hit off successive balls. Such was the toll the knock took on his mind and body, Brad is unable to remember much of his innings, while the crowd of more than 100 is unlikely to ever forget it. Springwood amassed 231 from 43 overs, then bowled Emu Plains out for 157 to take its record on Back to Springwood Day to two wins and no losses.

1st GRADE

To have qualified for the semi-finals after collecting three consecutive wooden spoons illustrates just how successful first grade’s season was.

The result of the semi-final, a 41 run loss to Panthers – the defending premiers – was disappointing, but was also a hint of what we can expect from the first XI in the next couple of years from a youthful side.

The team’s performance was a result of determination and hard work, with every player adding a valuable ingredient to the mix. Springwood is certainly not a team of champions, but without doubt is a champion team, and the dramatic improvement is something each of the 18 players to play first grade this year can be justifiably proud of.

Batting was one area where Springwood shone this year, with Paul Petterson, Kieran Doyle, Michael Pointon, Sam Pointon and Adam Thomas all scoring in excess of 270 runs.

Dave Williams’ contribution was also invaluable, with more than 200 runs to go along with his 10 dismissals behind the stumps and experienced guidance in the field. The solid combination of Michael Pointon and Dave Williams at the top of the order was the foundation for many great batting performances by Springwood in 2004-05.

Springwood’s work with the ball mirrored that of the batsmen, with no single bowler carrying the side. Paul Petterson capped off a memorable season with 20 wickets to go with his 320 runs, while Paul Hameister, Peter Crouch, Sam Pointon and Steve Bailey (when available) worked as a group to regularly bowl teams out for low scores.

Another highlight from the season was Adam Thomas’ breakthrough century, scoring 113 not out against Penrith RSL at Lomatia Park. The cheers and applause from teammates as Adam brought up his ton with a six over the deep midwicket fieldsman’s head was surely a mixture of elation and relief.

Back to Springwood Day was also a memorable one, with Springwood prevailing by 80 runs against Emu Plains before a healthy crowd. The win was set-up by Brad Filmer’s 73 from 46 balls in oppressive heat, with Kieran Doyle’s 66 and Paul Hameister’s 4-37 with the ball also driving Springwood towards an emphatic win.

We can expect 2005-06 to be an even better season for Springwood in first grade, as a tight-knit group of cricketers, with a mix of youth and experience, look to improve on a satisfying and memorable season in 2004-05.

As the rain came down in the last game of the season to end any chances of a final win, it seemed an appropriate end to a disappointing year for second grade. Ending in seventh place, there were a lot of performances throughout the season that deserved a better final result. Officially, 30 different players filled places during the year, and consistency in the line up was perhaps the greatest hurdle to a reasonable result. Many thanks to the people that helped out to fill in places- especially Andrew Kobryn from juniors who played four thankless matches after playing his own games in the morning.

Many thanks also to Steve Kobryn, who “filled” the captaincy spot when I was away. This ended up being in the order of half the season. Chris Novak also had a single match as captain, which ended in victory. Not only did they perform very well, but had a clear edge in the ability to win a toss.

Despite our placing, there were many good performances throughout the year. Mitch Bagou took out the batting aggregate despite playing only 8 games in second grade, averaging nearly 30. Chris Novak, Steve Kobryn and Mick Fowler also performed well with the bat, averaging in the order of 20. Cameron McInnes’ three innings averaged 31, Andrew Berry’s four games averaged 18, Jeremy Moss’ two games averaged 25 and Scott Wells scored 48 in his one innings.

Consistency was not so much a problem in batting as maintaining a batting line-up.

Jamie Moore collected the most wickets with 23 from his 2000 overs. He bowled superbly throughout the season, but almost let Steve Kobryn in (20 wickets) by being ill for the last game. Had the last game not been rained out, it would have been close. Chris Novak also bowled well finishing with 16 wickets, and Matt Kobryn just got better and better over the season, finishing with 15 wickets.

Speaking of getting better during the season, Jon Maloney’s keeping stood out to take the fielding award this season.

There are some special efforts that also need mentioning. Chris Novak bowled a spectacular three over spell of double and triple bounce bowling, which, instead of being dispatched, collected the figures of 2 for 13 - go figure. Cameron McInnes receives the award for 50 runs in an innings without hitting the middle of the bat and Matty Apps receives his usual appealing award (sponsored by V).

Taren Finemore’s single foray from under 15’s resulted in 23 runs and 3 wickets, a fantastic performance. The fines container, which had a lot of money to keep secure this year for infringements in drop catches and ducks, did a superb job. Many thanks to the collective Kobryn family for its donations. Many thanks to Mick Fowler for running such an efficient fines collection system.

Many thanks to all the lads for an entertaining season. We gave most teams a nudge this year and were in winning positions in most, but couldn’t go on to capitalise. Hopefully we can turn that around next year.

What a difference a year makes! This season the boys really ‘stepped up to the plate’ (or should that be “crease”) and performed beyond expectations. Unlike previous seasons where our results revealed unbearable inconsistency, this season our performances were far less erratic, especially with the ball. In a season full of spectacular personal achievements, certain individuals took their games to the next level and really showed us of what they are capable.

Nine wins (one outright) saw us finish in third place, only one point behind the second placed team, who were the eventual winners of the competition. Indeed the semi-final against the eventual winners Penrith Gaels, while not providing one of our more illustrious batting performances, went right down the wire with the result in the balance until the last 10 overs of play. Most sides seem to have their ‘bogey’ teams and for seventh grade it was most certainly Gaels. Nonetheless, effort, commitment and enthusiasm nearly saw us advance to the final.

Perhaps the most remarkable game of the season was against Glenmore Park in round two. The first week having been washed out, saw the match revert to a ‘one-day’ format (or at least that was our understanding of the NDCA rule at the time). After dismissing the opposition for 19, passing them one down after five overs, we were enjoying the post match ‘review’ at the Royal by 2.30pm.

This match really saw the establishment of an opening bowling partnership that was to form the backbone of our attack for much of the season. Daniel Paterson and Chris Dufty both had a sensational year sharing the new ball. We became terribly dismayed, bordering on frustrated if we were unable to break the back of the opposition’s batting line-up inside the first eight overs.

Daniel finished the season proper with a club record breaking 55 wickets at 6.0 and Chris a highly creditable 28 wickets at 12.4. Daniel grabbed the meritorious five-wicket haul on five occasions including eight wickets on three occasions (best 8-7) and 10 wickets in a match on one occasion.

The pair was ably supported by our other bowlers and quite remarkably no less than five players acquired five wicket hauls at some time during the season. Our key spinner, Nathan “please can I have the ball” McDermott also had a most successful season. In the season proper, he captured 34 wickets with determination, skill and guile (not to mention the vociferous appeals that made Shane Warne look like a mute!) with a best of 7-20. He took a further eight wickets in the semi-final against Gaels. He was also one the team’s mainstays with the bat finishing with 208 runs with a best of 65.

But in the true Anzac spirit that “age shall not weary them”, the ever-reliable Graeme Martin also produced some outstanding bowling (best of 5-24) and batting (highest 61) performances to be one of our more consistent players (though it should be said, right up there with the captain in the ‘dropped catches’ department!).

The ‘Doug Walters’ of seventh grade, Kynan Hopkins, while not possessing the most engaging bowling action, invariably produced a wicket when it was seriously needed. His ability to break a frustrating partnership was uncanny. He finished the year with a handful of wickets at 4.0 with a best of 3-2.

Our batting, unlike the bowling, was a little less predictable. Fortunately, on many occasions, we were either chasing a very modest target or able to defend one. Swashbuckling opening batsman, Ethan Brawn, finished the year with 238 runs at 26.4 with a highest score of 43. He complemented this achievement with several very fine catches ‘in close’ in his inimitable style. Aside from Ethan, Nathan and Graeme, the other main run producers were Daniel (167 runs at 21), Frank “iron gloves” McDermott (72 runs) and the captain with 205 mostly ‘walked’ runs.

11

PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com It would be highly remiss of me if I didn’t congratulate the efforts of the other team members who all had their ‘moments in the sun’ – literally and metaphorically!

Jeremy Moss, who filled in admirably at the ‘back-end’ of the season (75 runs, four wickets and six catches) was sensational and is developing into an entertaining and highly skilled cricketer.

Luke “Where’s mid-off?” Ognibene was always reliable and was involved in several valuable lower order partnerships; Nathan “this bat will do” Hardge was sensational in the field and made a useful contribution with the ball on the occasions when called upon; Steve “Can I bat a bit higher this week?” Cooper only had limited opportunities but was a real team motivator on the field; Ken “Yeah, I can fill in again this week” Dufty was always there when needed and Daniel “Can I have Johnnies Job?” Myles took several outstanding catches and I say unhesitatingly our ‘fielder’ of the year.

Thanks also to Craig Churchill and Evan Stanford who filled in when we were short. And what about the ‘ol-timer, Peter “Crikey, I’m too old for this” Jenkins who helped us out towards the end of the season and who showed you never lose it, rather it only goes missing. He may turn slower than a piece of cheese but he still averaged 23 with the bat and took 6 wickets at 7.7. Not bad for an old fella! Finally Scott Paterson, while only playing one game before moving to play grade with Penrith, grabbed a 5 wicket haul and played a big part in getting our season off on the right foot.

But for many of us there are things even more important than outstanding results and individual achievements. This was a team that enjoyed each other’s company both on and off the field. While winning was fun, simply ‘being there’ was better. And in that regard, part of what made it better was the wonderful support I received during the season from a number of very special people.

Frank McDermott did an absolutely fantastic job in the week to week organisation of the team. There is not a lot of fun, rather some considerable expense, in chasing replacement players on Friday night or Saturday morning. He did it without hesitation or complaint.

Also to our ever-reliable scorer, Gina, I convey from the entire team a most heartfelt ‘thank you’ for your efforts. As I’m sure all players would attest, it’s much more enjoyable when all you have to do is look at the score rather than be involved in its recording!

Finally, thank you to everyone involved in seventh grade cricket during the 2004-05 season and also to those involved in the management of the club for ‘making it all happen’ behind the scenes. Your efforts also deserve proper acknowledgement and recognition.

Greg Paterson

The eighth grade team consisted of a core group of 14 players: Matt Bryant, Cameron Bryant, Ed Kitchener, Shaun Kitchener, Graeme Lewis, Matt Lewis, Peter Hitchens, Evan Stanford, Elliott Redwin, Chris New, Matt New, Hayden Druce, Brendan Moroney and Lachlan Simpson. Of these 14 players, nine were under the age of 20 playing in their first year of senior cricket, with the youngest, Cameron Bryant, also playing with the U14s on Saturday mornings.

To perform so well in finishing fifth out of 10 teams was therefore a very creditable effort. Two close losses to eventual premiers Henry Lawson and a less than favorable draw were the main reasons the semi-finals were just missed.

There were some very good team performances, including a fine win against previous season’s premiers Glenmore Park in the first game and also some fine individual efforts, but most importantly was the experience the young guys gained playing against older and more experienced players.

Having four of our matches on the hallowed turf of Lomatia Park was also a highlight and added to the learning experience for the young players.

A very pleasing aspect of the season was the way all players assisted with scoring and umpiring which made the senior players’ jobs a lot easier. Special thanks to the old blokes Matt Bryant and Ed Kitchener who assisted with organisation and captaincy during the season. Hope to see all the boys back for the 2005-06 season.

JUNIOR PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS

JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR: Cirino Triscari

Last season’s “ Most Promising Junior Cricketer” followed through on his enormous potential in 2004-05, leading his side to a berth in the semi finals. Whether batting, bowling or keeping wickets, Cirino performed with distinction. He scored 605 runs (including 48 in the semi-final) at an average of 121, took seven wickets (from just 17 overs) with the ball and was responsible for 10 dismissals behind the stumps and in the field. On two occasions he past three figures, with 104 not out against Penrith RSL and 100 retired against Cranebrook. Other notable scores were 80no, 62 no, 56, 70 and 48. Only once did he fail to reach double figures with the bat.

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR CRICKETER: Cameron Bryant

Cameron faced a tremendous challenge in 2004-05, with his side playing in division one, but led the U14-1s’ batting line-up with mature batting that netted him 440 runs at an average of 48.88, including a fine knock of 126. His safe hands held six catches and he even took two wickets. Cameron has been building up to a significant season for the past couple of years, and he’ll be looking for 2004-05 to be a springboard into the senior ranks. He made his senior cricket debut this season, playing in eighth grade, and against much older and more experienced opposition he handled himself well: 177 runs at 25.28 with a highest score of 39 not out.

PAUSEY SHIELD: Jonathan Lees (Junior Clubman of the Year)

The Pausey Shield for Junior Clubman of the Year is not awarded for superb ability on the field, though Jonathan had that in spades: 261 runs – including a half-century, seven catches and 16 wickets. What caught the attention of everyone in the club was the way Jonathan embodied the spirit of cricket that exists in our club. His sportsmanship was indicative of the way we all would like to play cricket, and see cricket played. His good performances on the field were no more important than the way he went about his ‘work’, as his U13-2 side marched towards the premiership.

MILO HAVE-A-GO CRICKET 2004-2005

Another great season for our milo have-a-go cricketers. There were 30 enthusiastic young children, who turned up every friday afternoon to run around the number one cricket ground in the Blue Mountains. The aim of the program is run over 10 weeks before. It is for boys and girls aged 4 to 8 to learn the skills of cricket, but at the same time find enjoyment from the game. Unfortunately some inclement weather made for a few washouts, but everyone came back after christmas to have our allotted weeks.

The program isn't about finding the champions of tomorrow, its to help the children learn the basics of cricket and have some fun. Although from some of the talent in this year's crop, the future of Australian cricket is looking good. Each week the children showed up with smiles on their faces and were ready for some fun, and by the end it was great to see the improvement from all the participants.

Special thakns to Dave Williams and Peter Crouch for their help throughout the year.

Hope to see everyone back again next year

UNDER 8

The under 8 format was played for the first time this season in the Penrith District and was designed to teach and develop young cricketers rather than playing in a competition proper.

Games were played under rules quite similar to indoor cricket and ensured every player had equal opportunity to experience all aspects of the game of cricket. Games were decided by dividing runs scored by wickets lost and while we won fewer games than our opponents under this format, every player had an enjoyable season playing as a team and representing Springwood Cricket Club.

The season highlight was certainly our first game at Blue Hills in Glenmore Park. Parents were thrilled to see the children finally wear the blue and gold of Springwood and displaying skills that will surely become the future of our club.

Many hot mornings were spent standing in the sun and it is to the kids’ credit that their preference was to try to play the best cricket possible without complaint.

A quick word about each of our playing roster:

Daniel Sparkes - Outstanding bat – when bowling, needs to work out if he’s Brett Lee or Shane Warne! Cameron Terry - Finished as leading wicket taker – worked out very quickly the ‘you miss, I hit theory’. Damien Jones – Scored runs, took wickets and spent a fair amount of the early season as keeper – solid performance. Jamie Winn – second leading runscorer and miserly with the runs scored off his bowling – great action, a star of the future. Took a catch in the last game beyond belief. Patrick Moloney – Small in stature, big in heart – always contributed to a partnership and gave his all. Lyndon Moss – Showed talent beyond his years, particularly when keeping. Huge batting potential. Zachary Hameister - Made the most of his opportunity with the ball. Lack of success with the bat possibly genetic. Great fielding with a few direct hit run-outs. Cameron Hole – Always played in the spirit of the game. Bowled without luck but a solid bat throughout the season. Nathan Harvey – Another gentleman of the game. Contributed with runs and wickets and always enjoyed his cricket. Zoe Hameister – The only girl in the side and 2 years younger than the rest to boot. Her first run for Springwood was a big highlight. Never shied away from older opposition and took wickets as well.

A huge thank you to all parents who supported the children and helped out with scoring, umpiring, padding up the kids and organising the team. Jason Wright coached the team in the early part of the season and played a big part in their development while I managed the side. We would love to see all back in the upcoming season where we will all be better for the experience. It’s an old saying but a true one – cricket was the winner.

This team showed the value of a “team effort” throughout the season, with every team member doing their bit to help the side win five matches.

Tom Lewer did well with bat and ball and was one of three players to score the highest score of 25 not out during the season. He also made 22 against Glenrook-Blaxland. Tom took 10 wickets at a fantastic average of 8.8.

Luke Hansen bravely batted at the top of the order on a number of occasions, adding valuable runs to the total. His best effort came against Cranebrook, racking up 19 runs. He was economical with the ball, taking three wickets with an economy rate under three an over.

Nicholas Mulvaney was another economical bowler, breaking through for six wickets, and progressing with the bat throughout the season. His highest score was 12 not out. He showed a very safe pair of hands to hold six catches.

James Newton was the leading runscorer with 111 for the season, including a fine 25 not out. His average was an amazing 13.9. His ability with the bat will continue to grow as he hones his skills in higher age groups.

Patrick Rosato showed great allround ability to score 52 runs with a high score of 25 not out, take six catches and seven wickets, with best figures of 2 for 8.

Tasha Krasny was a wrecker with the ball, with an amazing 14 wickets, the best in the team. Tasha bowled accurately all season, with 10 maidens from 46 overs a feat a cricketer of any age would be proud of. Best figures of 4 for 1 were evidence of the amazing potential Tasha has.

Mitchell Shore was Tasha’s partner in crime with the ball, with nine wickets – including an amazing spell of 3 for 0! He also took two catches and scored 35 runs.

Liam Ainsworth improved consistently this year, and enjoyed his cricket. Season 2004-05 brought him 32 runs, five wickets and a catch.

Jarryd Boyd was another young cricketer who showed he was a force with bat and ball this season, passing 50 runs for the year on top of five wickets and a catch. Had several promising innings cut short by unlucky run outs.

Nathan Hunt recorded the equal-best bowling figures this year, taking 4 for 1 in the final match of the year to show the district’s batsmen what they can expect next season. He took eight wickets in all.

Jace Cross showed a canny ability of keeping his wicket intact, finishing not out in three of his final six innings. As his bowling improved he began to frustrate the batsmen, with 2 for 13 his best haul.

Jack Truscott showed a fantastic attitude to his cricket and his bowling emerged as his forte this season. He took three wickets and made the batsmen earn every run.

What an enjoyable season. This team was a joy to coach. The boys had a great year in terms of results, winning the One Day Final and the Premiership, all undefeated. Perhaps what was more important was the way they won. A truly team effort and a team, that truly enjoyed each others efforts. This was demonstrated in the way they; yelled encouragement to each other, huddled together after every wicket in every game, made a salutation tunnel for our batsmen and spontaneously lifted the captain onto their shoulders at the completion of the final. In addition, the success of the year was a reflection of the parental body of the team who all encouraged their boys, helped with the various jobs and turned out in numbers to each of our games – thankyou.

The team included 5 new boys, 4 of whom had not previously played in a cricket team. Our year was probably defined by our first game when, with 3 wickets in hand and only 7 runs to get, Jack Casey and Nick O’Brien finalised the matter to give us an unlikely win. Our surprisingly easy One Day win made us a little complacent but we came back to win a close encounter in the final. To indulge this team, here is a little about each player.

Matthew Newton: Captain of the team. Featured in 6 of our 10 highest partnerships including 144 with Tom Winn in the semi-final. Except on one occasion, came into bat at a precarious time for the team. Scored four unbeaten 50’s. Top batting aggregate of 403 at an average of 57 .57, took 14 wickets at 8, 12 catches, 3 run-outs and a stumping. Had a great finals series with two unbeaten 50’s. Mr Reliable. (Batting Award)

Nicholas O’Brien: Vice- Captain. Featured in 4 of our 10 highest partnerships. Had the second highest partnership of 128 with Matt Newton. Team’s highest individual score of 60no, Aggregate of 212 with 2 unbeaten 50’s, 11 catches and 8 wickets. An aggressive batsman and a fierce bowler. Not to mention an immoveable rock at silly short leg. (Fielding Award)

Jayden Bennett: Had not played cricket before this summer and was thrown in a deep end to wicket keep. Jayden ended up taking 14 catches – a superb effort (4 in one game). He had a Batting Aggregate 32 and was a useful out swing bowler taking 6 wickets. He backed this up with 2 run- outs. Importantly, his highest score of 14n.o. came in the One Day Final. (Best New Player Award)

Jack Casey: A deceptively difficult bowler to face and bowled very economically. A solid batsmen who steadied the ship on a number of occasions. Featured in a great opening stand with Tom Winn of 111. Jack is a strong player who was able to slip in a much faster delivery or give the ball a good nudge when necessary. He had a batting aggregate of 113, took 8 wickets and held 7 catches.

Tim Cumming: Another new player to the team, who also had not played before and for good measure, was asked to play up an age group. He is a left hander with a batting aggregate of 10. He had a very neat shot off his legs when given the opportunity. Tim made the mid wicket and cover region his due to his speed over the turf. He was a handy seam bowler taking 9 wickets.

James Dobbins-Jones: Another new player to the team, who had not played before and it would be fair to say felt a little uncomfortable with the experience to start with. However, James worked really hard in the nets and improved immensely. He had a couple of key moments; bowling the strongest batter for RSL just when the team needed a wicket and after a few lean games scoring his first runs and being part of a 30 run partnership when we had had somewhat of a batting collapse against Emu Plains. Batting aggregate of 7 and 2 wickets. (Most Improved Award)

42

PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com Harry Fuller: A keen team man and a good trainer. The opposing teams had trouble with his leg cutters and he bowled a great spell to Colyton/StClair on an overcast day, contributing greatly to the outright win. Harry was capable of playing a very straight bat. Batting aggregate of 4 and 2 wickets.

Zakki Hussain: A very strong player who is capable of hitting the ball hard and had a throwing arm that would make Glen McGrath proud. A good fielder and he worked hard to improve his bowling, such that, in the final series he went for less than one run an over. This contributed enormously to the team effort right when it was needed. Batting Aggregate of 28, took 5 wickets, 1 catch and 1 run- out.

Jacob Mackay: Another new player to the team. Jacob is humble and very much a team player. He fielded at point with great enthusiasm and bowled with a high arm action making it very difficult for the opposing batsmen. He took 6 wickets with good economy. He was a keen trainer a worked hard on his batting. Jacob hit a beautiful four in the Final and featured in our highest 6th wicket stand with Matt Newton and the highest 7th wicket stand with Nick O’Brien. His batting aggregate was 16 with 1 catch.

Lachlan Peterson: Another new player and played up an age division to help with our numbers. Lachlan was a very accurate left arm bowler and developed through season to be quite quick. He could be a handful in years to come. He took 10 wickets, 2 catches, 1 run-out and had a batting aggregate of 31. A good all round effort.

Sam Tucker: Our other left arm bowler who made bowling in finals his thing. Took 4 wickets for 6 in the One Day Final and bowled a maiden over right at very tense time in the Premiership Final. He also made some great saves in the covers and making a strong return to the keeper which always kept the pressure on the batsman. He took 9 wickets, had a batting aggregate of 25, 2 catches and a run-out.

Peter Wilson: A very strong player. A fast opening bowler and a very aggressive batsman. Peter had a great One Day Final scoring 50 no (with one 6) and 3 wickets. He featured in 2 of our highest 10 partnerships. He had a batting aggregate of 310 with 3 50’s an average of 62. 22 wickets at 5.41, 11 catches and 4 run-outs. (Coach’s Award)

Thomas Winn: Our spin bowler. Thom is a great team man, often opening the batting even though it would not be his preference. Yet, he featured in 2 of our top 3 partnerships (144 and 111) and had a batting aggregate of 159. He bowled very well snaring 20 wickets at 6.2 and he is an “offie”. Thom also held 6 catches and had the highest number of run-outs, 6. (Bowling Award)

This has been long winded though it has been important to demonstrate how each player has contributed to the success of the team. The team took a total of 65 catches and 18 run-outs, which sounds pretty good to me. Truly, a team of all-rounders.

I must thank Warwick Winn our manager for his help and support. Rod Cumming for umpiring a lot, especially “that” final. The O’Briens (both John and Sandra) and Matt Peterson for doing the bulk of the scoring. Ron Fuller, Francis Mackay, and Karim Hussain for helping at training. A special thankyou to Karim Hussain (and Blue Mountains Buses) for our “you beaut” training caps.

I look forward to seeing all the boys back again to give 1st division a shake.

Every member of this fine team took their cricket forward this season, and for some it was a season that saw potential converted into results. For all it was a summer of great fun and teamwork and above all, fine sportsmanship.

Oliver Summerfield-Ryan and Hamish Lees led the charge, with 199 runs/11 wickets and 16 wickets/145 runs respectively. They were backed up by a team that never said die and always played hard and fair.

James Latham, Brayden Costello, Calum Williams and Jason Thrift all showed real ability with the bat, combining for more than 300 runs, each with a highest score in the 20s.

The wickets were shared quite evenly by most of the team, with all players troubling batsmen at different times. Jesse Mitton ended up with six wickets and best haul of 3 for 5, while Matt Truscott, Jackson Last, Taylor Gracie and Alec Hopkins all broke through for important wickets.

Oskar Edgren’s opportunities were limited, but he epitomised the spirit of the team: giving it your best and having fun in the process.

UNDER 13-2

The 2004-05 season ended with the boys winning a tense division two final against Cranebrook, after starting the season in division one. It was a difficult first few months combining 13 boys from two previous teams into a harmonious team that knew what each player’s role was.

After the Christmas break all the training and effort paid off. The boys made the semi-finals in third place, deafeating St Clair before overcoming minor-premiers Cranebrook in the final.

The team was well led by captain Jonathan Lees and vice-captain Cameron Boyd. We also benefited from a lot of parent help with Anne Krasny as our team manager, Danny Stibbard, Tammy Lewer and Derek Taylor as our accurate score keepers with coaching and umpiring expertise from Frank Triscari and Mark Denny.

Jonathan Lees: Outstanding player and captain, Jonathan topped the batting, scoring 261 runs at an average of 29, took seven catches and gained 16 wickets. His two half centuries and three high partnerships inspired the team to win the competition. Jono represented the Nepean district and received best batting award for the U13-2 division. Jono has a great future in cricket for .

Cameron Boyd: High-scoring batsman and excellent keeper, Cameron was a key player in the middle order, scoring 180 runs with one half century to go alongside his seven catches and four wickets with the ball. Cameron is a talented sportsman and we hope he continues his great form with Springwood next season.

Dylan Krasny: Dylan batted very well in the top order, scoring 215 runs at an average of 15, including a top score of 53 in the semi-final that included a record second wicket partnership of 94 with Jono. Dylan also took 12 wickets and seven catches and has the ability to be a fine allrounder of the future. Dylan was the joint winner of the batting award.

Liam Denny: Continued to score well in the middle order with 118 runs and a top score of 34 in a record fifth wicket partnership of 90 with Cam. His bowling also has potential, with five wickets to add to six excellent catches in the field. Liam is determined to score a 50 and it should happen next season. 44

PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com Joshua Abbey: Scored 116 runs, a top score of 50 retired and was involved in several match- winning partnerships, including a record third wicket stand of 87 with Jono. Josh’s left-arm wrist spin produced 12 wickets. He took two catches and won the most improved award for his solid development as an allrounder.

Harley Stibbard: Scored116 runs at a consistent average of 10, including a top score of 21 and a match-winning innings of 18 in the final. Harley was our best trainer with hard practice developing him into an emerging spin bowler, with 12 important wickets. He received the coach’s award.

William Tredinnick: The team’s strike bowler, William took the most wickets (18) and scored 61 runs, including a record sixth-wicket stand of 35 with Cam. William received the bowling award. He also took three catches and has allrounder potential.

Jamie Colquhoun: Developed into a reliable opening batsman, scoring 59 runs with a highest score of 22 and was involved in a record ninth wicket stand of 20 with harley. Jamie took six wickets and six catches and is determined to score even more runs next season.

Robbie Colquhoun: Had a disrupted start to the season, recovering from a broken leg, but was able to contribute 35 runs, three wickets and five catches. Robbie will continue to improve in the future.

Troy Dawes: Gave 100 per cent effort in every game, with 27 runs, eight catches and six wickets. Troy gave the team positive support and is keen to improve his batting in future seasons.

Dom Triscari: Scored 33 runs, took nine wickets and two catches. Dom was the team’s youngest player and did well with limited opportunities. Dom has a solid defence and can get higher scores with better shot selection.

Adam Taylor: Took six wickets, four catches and scored 23 runs. Adam opened the bowling on several occasions with some success. With greater self-confidence, Adam can become an allrounder.

Jake Lewer: The most enthusiastic player in games and training, Jake saved his best score of eight for the final, adding crucial ninth wicket runs with Josh. His four wickets and three catches demonstrate his contribution to the team at all times.

A big thanks to all the parents and supporters of the boys for making our team a committed and harmonious one. The boys’ development and success has prepared them to be a competitive division one team in 2005-06.

Well its time to unbuckle the pads and commit pen to paper and provide our thoughts about the 2004-05 season for the U14-1 team.

The season commenced rather haphazardly with a late start to preparations. This late season reflected in our results early, then, a team dropped out of the competition having a direct affect on our team. It was a season of stop-start with byes etc and we simply just could not get on any sort of roll. We did manage to scramble into the semi-finals but we just were not good enough on the day to make it to the final.

Having said the above, the competition was very close. This was evidenced by the fact that we ran fourth, yet our quotient was above one, meaning that we averaged more runs scored that we have scored against us. We were competitive in most matches and did defeat both Glenbrook and Colyton during the season and these two teams played in the final.

The most pleasing part of this season was the outstanding progression made by every player in one or a number of aspects of their game.

Many of these boys played division two cricket in 2003-04 and in one case division three so the step to this level proved to be a challenge from the outset.

Every boy stepped up to that challenge and played some outstanding cricket as the season progressed. As a team we came together and above all else you could feel that by semi-final time we had gelled very well. Whilst we may not have got all of the results that we were perhaps looking for, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

We can only hope that these boys will all return next season so that we can build on what we achieved this season.

In closing we would like to thank Julie and Shane for their help with the clerical side of Saturday morning cricket.

Also, to all of the mums and dads, for your support, many thanks. It is wonderful that these boys have such great support from their parents, we may not have won the comp but we certainly had the biggest and best supporter base. Lastly to the boys themselves thank you for a good season filled with many memorable moments and quite a few laughs. After all, enjoying the game is really what it is all about.

Ray Bancroft and I coached the team this season and had a truly enjoyable year. Although we won only one game, the young men we worked with were dedicated, committed, and most importantly, demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the season. Winning definitely isn’t everything! And now for a few comments on each player…

James Fraser: Had an excellent season with bat and ball, and was a stalwart of the team. When bowling, James constantly kept the ball up to the batsmen whilst maintaining outstanding accuracy. James had the second highest batting aggregate for the season. We are all looking for another big season from James next year.

Robert Garland: Had a solid season and once again proved to be a real “team man”. With regard to batting, there is no doubting Robert’s potential to play a big innings. This season Robert successfully went back to bowling medium pace in conjunction with his spin. I expect the 2005-2006 season will be a big one for Rob.

Nathan Gegg: Eligible to play U13s this season, Nathan demonstrated the ability and skill to fit comfortably into the U14s. Although he had limited opportunities with the bat he showed grit and determination whenever he was at the crease. He had a very good season with the gloves (three catches). His enthusiasm and sense of fun was infectious amongst the team.

Allan Hung: Yet another player eligible for the U13s, Allan became a valuable member of the team from the outset of the season. Allan possesses great potential in both his batting and bowling. He has safe hands and a strong arm in the outfield. Allan will emerge as a genuinely gifted player and I anticipate a big season in 2005-06.

Tim Hunter: This was Tim’s first season playing competition cricket and what a good season he had. Tim not only bowled medium-fast with good line and length, but also off spin gaining bounce and turn that made him unplayable at times. He had a great season with the bat, showing good technique with natural aggression. Tim will have a great impact next season.

Gary Kime: This was Gary’s second season in the game and his improvement was outstanding. His line and length when bowling has turned him one of our main strike bowlers. He has worked hard on his batting technique and this will bear fruit in the coming season. Gary has without doubt been the big improver over the last two seasons.

Tim Lehman Had an outstanding season yet again. Tim holds both the bowling aggregate and average for the year. His batting has continued to improve to the point where he is one of our most reliable and consistent run-getters. Tim’s attitude and enthusiasm are exemplary. I expect Tim will have a big season in 2005-2006.

Richard Nield: Richard had another exceptionally good season with the team. His wicket-keeping skills continue to develop, as has his batting ability. Richard’s ability to occupy the crease for long periods is amazing. He also performed well with the ball taking several wickets for few runs. He’s another player with enormous potential.

Luke Phillips: Had a very good season with bat and ball. Luke has the ability to develop into a top line batsman and will no doubt prove this within the next season. He had a successful season with the ball as his ability to “dip” the ball into the batsman consistently led to wickets being captured. A big season awaits Luke in 2005-2006.

47

PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com Matt Poynting: Had an outstanding season with the bat leading the run aggregate and average for the team. Perhaps Matt’s biggest contribution to the team was his captaincy. He provided support and encouragement to his teammates as well as showing respect to the opposition. Matt is a very good team man who had a great year.

Sam Ross: Had a very successful season demonstrating his ever-improving bowling skills. Sam worked up some genuine speed this year that intimidated many of the batsmen who had the misfortune to face him. One of several pleasing factors about Sam’s bowling was his ability and preparedness to change pace so as to put the batsman into two minds. Sam will have a big season in 2005-06.

Brad Wallis: Not only another player eligible to play U13s, but also making his debut, Brad had an exceptional season. He displayed great determination when batting showing no fear when facing the competitions “gun” bowlers. Brad’s bowling was outstanding, with the ability to move the ball away from the right-handers a real boon. He’s an excellent fieldsman, and one of the most enthusiastic players in the side.

Finally, Ray and I would like to thank all the families who supported their sons throughout the season. We were fortunate to have grandparents, parents and siblings regularly attend games. A special thank you to Mary Garland, the team manager. Also, thanks to Russell Lehman who, with Mary, undertook the task of scoring on a weekly basis.

Finally thanks to the young men who made up the U14-2s. You are a credit to yourselves, your family and Springwood Cricket Club.

The U15-1 Springwood Cricket Team were given unprecedented control over their games at various stages throughout the season through a non-reactive ethical approach to development and an SAQ (Speed-Agility-Quickness) fitness program aiming to integrate mind and body on and off the field.

This team is to be congratulated for their receptiveness to the challenges of such an approach as are the three coaches who gave up their time and expertise twice a week to unconditionally support their development and enjoyment of this most challenging of sports.

Throughout the season the goal of the coaches has been to mentor the team towards an honest management of their development as people and players of this wonderful game.

Invariably in a season which gradually grew in momentum there were several outstanding individual performances such as Cirino Triscari's two unbeaten centuries and the three bowlers - Taran Finemore, Stuart Bryson and Sebastian Kalos - who took five or more wickets in an innings; but maybe what is more statistically significant is the fact that by the season's end -in a very tight and exciting semi-final - every player was called upon by the captains to bowl with success being spread across the team.

Although Penrith RSL were ultimately well deserved winners in a game that was played in a spirit which was a credit to the sport - this kind of synergy from a group of young teenagers who began the season as a mixed ability composite team is a credit to the boys.

Coaching also attempted to model behaviour within the public arena of sport that was built around the connections that fielding offers.

Players concentrated on developing their fielding through specific drills that translated into spatial connections and agility on the field - a development that directly resulted in Springwood being the only team to defeat the previously undefeated minor premiers - Glenmore Park - in the second round.

More importantly, the season has been a landmark in the development of several players such as the fielding and batting of Ben O'Brien; the fine bowling at the end of season of Peter Costello; the batting technique of Kieren Moore and the emerging leadership skills of Chay Jordan and Cameron Taylor.

Finally, development is never truly possible without the unconditional support of a community of people and thanks must go to all those who willingly gave up their time to score and umpire each weekend.

Together we hope we have set an example and given some encouragement for the future.

So, it is with pride that we introduce the U15-1 Springwood Cricket Team for season 2004-2005: Stuart Bryson, Peter Costello, Phillip Dixon, Taran Finemore, Michael Hagan-Rowe, Dominic Hanly (co-captain), Chay Jordan (vice-captain), Sebastian Kalos, Paul Maloney, Kieren Moore, Benjamin O’Brien, Cameron Taylor, Cirino Triscari (co-captain).
