Venkaiah Naidu has embarked on a three-nation visit to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. • He is accompanied by a high-level delegation. • Vice President's visit will be the first-ever high-level visit to the three Baltic countries. • The visit takes place in the context of increasing political engagement, as well as intensified trade and commercial ties. Navy to host multi-lateral exercise ‘MILAN’ in Visakhapatnam The Indian Navy would be hosting ‘MILAN’, a multilateral naval exercise in Visakhapatnam in March 2020. • The MILAN series of biennial exercises, which commenced in 1995 and conducted at Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) until last year. • Last year’s edition was conducted for the first time on the mainland at the eastern naval command (ENC). 4. Vellore district to be trifurcated; Ranipet, Tirupattur to become new districts Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said that Vellore district will be trifurcated and two new districts, Ranipet and Tirupattur, will be formed.

    Awards, Persons & Places Parakram Diwas The Government of India recently announced that the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is to be celebrated as “Parakram Diwas”. Parakram Diwas means Courage Day. Netaji was born on January 23, 1897. The Central Government and the Bengal Government are to begin the yearlong celebrations of 125th birth anniversary year on January 23, 2021. Contents Netaji started a newspaper called “Swaraj”. He had written a book called “The Indian Struggle”. The term “Jai Hind” was coined by Netajji Subhash Chandra Bose. He formed the All India Forward Bloc as a part of the Indian National Congress in 1939. Flight Lieutanant Bhawana Kanth Bhawana Kanth is to become the first woman fighter pilot to take part in the Republic Day parade. She was one among the first women fighter pilots inducted in Indian Air Force in 2016. The other fighter pilots inducted into the Indian Air Force were Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh. Contents Bhawana Kanth In 2019, Bhawana Kanth became the first female fighter pilot of India to qualify to undertake combat missions. She received the Nari Shakti Puraskar from President of India Ramnath Kovind in March 2020. Jammu & Kashmir: GI tag for Gucchi Mushroom The Jammu and Kashmir Government recently sought GI tag for Gucchi mushroom. The Gucchi mushrooms are highly expensive and are full of health benefits. 500 grams of Gucchi mushrooms cost Rs 18,000. Recently, GI Tag was provided to Saffron of Jammu and Kashmir. They are referred to “May Mushrooms” in North America. The Gucchi mushrooms cannot be cultivated commercially.

Key Points About: The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The now renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award comes with a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is the highest sporting award given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years. The award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh. The Khel Ratna award was instituted in 1991-1992 and the first recipient was Chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Among the other winners were Leander Paes, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhanraj Pillay, Pullela Gopichand, Abhinav Bindra, Anju Bobby George, Mary Kom and Rani Rampal in 2020. 1/2 Major Dhyan Chand: Known as The Wizard, Major Dhyan Chand, a field hockey player, played international hockey from 1926 to 1949, scoring over 400 goals in his career. Dhyan Chand, born in Allahabad, was part of the Olympic team that won gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936. Apart from the Khel Ratna award, the country’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports is known as the Dhyan Chand Award.
