Pfrender1,2 and Xin Zhou10,11* Abstract Background: The primary energy-producing pathway in eukaryotic cells, the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system, comprises proteins encoded by both mitochondrial and nuclear genes. To maintain the function of the OXPHOS system, the pattern of substitutions in mitochondrial and nuclear genes may not be completely independent. It has been suggested that slightly deleterious substitutions in mitochondrial genes are compensated by substitutions in the interacting nuclear genes due to positive selection. Among the four largest insect orders, Coleoptera (beetles), Hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants, and bees), Diptera (midges, mosquitoes, and flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), the mitochondrial genes of Hymenoptera exhibit an exceptionally high amino acid substitution rate while the evolution of nuclear OXPHOS genes is largely unknown. Therefore, Hymenoptera is an excellent model group for testing the hypothesis of positive selection driving the substitution rate of nuclear OXPHOS genes. In this study, we report the evolutionary rate of OXPHOS genes in Hymenoptera and test for evidence of positive selection in nuclear OXPHOS genes of Hymenoptera. Results: Our analyses revealed that the amino acid substitution rate of mitochondrial and nuclear OXPHOS genes in Hymenoptera is higher than that in other studied insect orders. In contrast, the amino acid substitution rate of non-OXPHOS genes in Hymenoptera is lower than the rate in other insect orders. Overall, we found the dN/dS ratio of the nuclear OXPHOS genes to be higher in Hymenoptera than in other insect orders. However, nuclear OXPHOS genes with high dN/dS ratio did not always exhibit a high amino acid substitution rate. Using branch-site and site model tests, we identified various codon sites that evolved under positive selection in nuclear OXPHOS genes. Conclusions: Our results showed that nuclear OXPHOS genes in Hymenoptera are evolving faster than the genes in other three insect orders. The branch test suggested that while some nuclear OXPHOS genes in Hymenoptera show a signature of positive selection, the pattern is not consistent across all nuclear OXPHOS genes. As only few codon sites were under positive selection, we suggested that positive selection might not be the only factor contributing to the rapid evolution of nuclear OXPHOS genes in Hymenoptera. Examination of about 810 specimens, including multivariate morphometric analysis of 21 quantitative characters clearly separated three species, Dibrachys microgastri (Bouché, 1834), Dibrachys lignicola Graham, 1969, and Dibrachys verovesparum Peters & Baur sp. n., but allowed no further subdivision of taxa according to origin, host association or previous taxonomic concepts. A neotype is designated for D. microgastri and under this name are placed in synonymy the names Dibrachys cavus (Walker, 1835) syn. n. (including eight current junior synonyms), Dibrachys clisiocampae (Fitch, 1856) syn. n. (including five current junior synonyms), Dibrachys boarmiae (Walker, 1863) syn. n., and Dibrachys ele- gans (Szelényi, 1981) syn. n. Dibrachys goettingenus Doganlar, 1987 syn. n. is synonymized under D. lignicola. The mor- phological analyses revealed several new qualitative and quantitative characters for separating taxa in this species complex and an identification key and diagnoses are provided for females and males. The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. So ist diese Familie für das UG als gut erfaßt anzusehen, allerdings mit der üblichen Einschränkung, daß bestimmte Regionen Vorarlbergs noch immer im faunistischen Sinne unterrepräsentiert sind. Neben den eigenen Daten (AIS, inklusive jener aus der Sammlung BATTISTI, Dornbirn) und jenen aus den Sammlungen C.BRANDSTÄTTER, Bürs (BRA) und Dr. P.HUEMER, Inns- bruck (HUE) wurden die Bestände der Vorarlberger Naturschau, Dornbirn (NSD) mit den Teilsammlungen A.BITSCH (BIT), F.GRADL (GRA), F.RHOMBERG (RHO) und F.SAGE- DER (SAG) revidiert und ausgewertet. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the validity of this argument. Intranuclear proteinaceous crystals appear in differentiating midgut cells of Gyrinus marinus and Tenebrio molitor. In an autoradiographic study we have previously demonstrated in these two species that the crystals do not develop from nucleolar materials. However, an inverse relationship with regard to size is observed between these 2 structures during the cell differentiation: the cross- sectional area of the nucleolus decreases when the cross-sectional area of the crystal increases. But a decrease in size of the nucleolus is also observed during the differentiation of the midgut cells of Gyrinus natator where the crystals are not present. Consequently an inverse size relationship cannot be a sufficient argument to postulate that intranuclear crystals and nucleoli are interconvertible structures; decrease in size of the nucleolus is not related to development of the intranuclear crystal. INTRODUCTION The nuclear inclusions which have been described in numerous cells are quite diverse and several types have been recognized. There were only five people as two of the group had driven down directly to the hotel in Mauzac, from their home near Limoges in the department of Haute-Vienne immediately north of Dordogne. After a short walk to the minibus we were soon heading off through the fields towards Mauzac on the banks of the River Dordogne. A song thrush sang loudly as we left the airport and some of us had brief views of a corn bunting or two on the airport fence, whilst further on at the Couze bridge over the River Dordogne, several crag martins were flying. En route we also saw our first black kites and an occasional kestrel and buzzard. We were soon parking up at the Hotel Le Barrage where Amanda, the hotel manager, greeted us, gave out room keys and helped us with the suitcases. Here we also met the other couple who had driven straight to the hotel (and who’d already seen a barred grass snake along the riverbank).

The northernmost records of Laboulbeniales are reported from Tit-Ary (Rickia hyperborea Balazuc) and Bulun (Laboulbenia vulgaris Peyritsch), by the Lena River, north of 70°N in Yakutia. Laboulbenia egens Spegazzini, occurring on the carabidicolous genus Tachys (s.Iat.), is recognized as a spec1es separate from L. pedicel/ala Thaxter, occurring on the genera Bembidion (s.lat.) and Dyschirius. The variability of L. pedicel/a/a is discussed. Five new taxa are described: Laboulbenia broscosomae n.sp. on Broscosoma baldense Rosenh. from Italy, L. eubradyce/li n.sp. on Bradyce/lus spp. from many European countnes, L. kobi/ae n.sp. on Neotrechus sururalis ssp. suturalis Schr. from Yugoslavia, L. marvinii n.sp. on Bembidion dentellum (Thunb.) and B. starki Schaum from Austria, the Federal Repubhc of Germany and France, and L. luxurians subsp. immaculata n.subsp. on Bembidion semipunctatum (Donovan) from Austria and the Leningrad Region in the U.S.S.R.     Projekte Artenförderung – Erfassung und Förderung der Widderchen im Aargau Artensteckbriefe der einheimischen Widderchen (Zygaenidae) Hinweise zur Bestimmung und Beobachtung von Widderchen Um ein Rotwidderchen (Blutströpfchen) auf die Art zu bestimmen, genügt meist die sorgfältige Beobachtung der Merkmale oder ein gutes Foto der Oberseite. Wichtigstes Merkmal ist die Zahl, Form und Anordnung der roten Flecken auf der Vorderflügeloberseite. Weitere Infos hierzu finden sich im Bestimmungsschlüssel. Manchmal ist es vorteilhaft, das Tier zu fangen und in einem durchsichtigen Döschen oder Gläschen zu fotografieren. Nebst den Rotwidderchen kommen im Aargau auch Vertreter aus der Gruppe der Grünwidderchen vor. Diese Falter ähneln den Rotwidderchen; ihre Vorderflügel sind jedoch grünlich gefärbt. Grünwidderchen können nur nach aufwändiger Präparation des Genitalapparates sicher auf die Art bestimmt werden. Allerdings ist mit etwas Übung und einer guten Lupe die Unterscheidung der beiden Gattungen Adscita und Jordanita möglich. Widderchen können häufig saugend oder ruhend auf Blütenköpfchen angetroffen werden und sind bei langsamer Annäherung gut zu fotografieren. Bevorzugte Nektarpflanzen sind: Lila und violett gefärbte Blütenköpfchen : Witwenblumenarten ( Knautia sp .), Skabiose ( Scabiosa columbaria ), Flockenblumen ( Centaurea sp .), Distelarten ( Carduus sp., Cirsium sp .), Gebräuchliche Betonie ( Betonica officinalis ), Dost ( Origanum vulgare ) Teufelsabbiss ( Succusa pratensis ), Luzerne ( Medicago sativa ), Esparsette (Onobrychis sp. ),

    ABSTRACT BAYLESS, KEITH MOHR. Phylogenomic Studies of Evolutionary Radiations of Diptera. (Under the direction of Dr. Brian M. Wiegmann.) Efforts to understand the evolutionary history of flies have been obstructed by the lack of resolution in major radiations. Diptera is a highly diverse branch on the tree of life, but this diversity accrued at an uneven pace. Some of radiations that contributed disproportionately to species diversity occurred contemporaneously, and understanding the relationships of these taxa can illuminate broad scale patterns. Relationships between some subordinate groups of taxa are notoriously difficult to untangle, and genomic data will address these problems at a new scale. This project will focus on two major radiations in Diptera: Tabanus horse flies and relatives, and acalyptrate Schizophora. Tabanus includes over one thousand species. Synthesis focused research on the group is stymied by its species richness, worldwide distribution, inconsistent diagnosis, and scale of undescribed diversity. Furthermore, the genus may be non-monophyletic with respect to more than 10 other lineages of horse flies. A groundwork phylogenetic study of worldwide Tabanus is needed to understand the evolution of this lineage and to make comprehensive taxonomic projects manageable. Data to address this question was collected from two different sources. A dataset including five genes was sequenced from ninety-four species in the Tabanus group, including nearly all genera of Tabanini and at least one species from every biogeographic region. Then a new data source from a next generation sequencing approach, Anchored Hybrid Enrichment exome capture, was used to accumulate a dataset including hundreds of genes for a subset of the taxa.
