The Holmes Community College Fine Arts Department strives to provide superior-quality music and art programs using a university- parallel curriculum that will enable our students to transfer to the senior college/university on an equal basis with other junior level students. We strive to perform cultural on campus and throughout the nine-county district of HCC for entertainment and student performance. We also sponsor on-campus artistic events from other schools and universities and professional performing groups and provide facilities and person- nel to host cultural and community activities, performances, and presentations.

We also sponsor on-campus artistic events from other schools and universities and professional performing groups and provide facilities and personnel to host cultural and community activities, performances, and presentations.

Options for Artists If you are an artist and would like to continue your study of art in a professional environment, then Holmes Community College is the place for you! We offer a variety of studio and lecture classes that will introduce you to methods and materials used in the field of art. All studio art supplies are provided at no cost to the student, which is one of the unique advantages offered through Holmes.

Course of Study The curriculum follows the basic art major core and students would finish the academic core for transfer to a senior college. The art core includes but is not limited to the following: • Art History I &II • Drawing I & II • Painting I & II • 2-D Design I & II • 3-D Design • Ceramics

Theatre Department has been on the move for the last few years. Although HCC has been produc- ing plays through the Holme-Towne Players (the HCC drama club) for years, we have broadened our mission in the last few years to take theatre perfor- mances throughout our district. We offer a range of drama classes, ranging from acting to technical theatre, rotating them so that each semester the students are exposed to another segment of the world of theatre. Holmes Community College “Bulldog” Marching Band The Holmes Community College “Bulldog” Marching Band is a progressive college marching band with entertain- ment and pageantry as a goal. The Band performs an exciting halftime show at all the home football games and several away games each football season. The band also performs in various parades throughout the nine- county district. The Band rehearses four days a week for 2 hours after classes on the Goodman Campus. The marching band consists of a horn line, drum line, pit, color guard, and drum majors. Scholarships are available for members of the marching band.

Holmes Band The Holmes Community College Jazz band is a select group of musicians who enjoy playing jazz, swing, and progressive styles of music. The “big band” group consists of brass, woodwinds, keyboard, a singer, and a performing many on and off campus concerts throughout the school year. A highly energized group, the jazz band offers the student a chance to play pop and standard jazz music not offered in other bands. This band rehearses two times per week and receives one credit hour at the college.

Holmes Community College Steel Band The Holmes Community College Steel Band began in 1995; it is a full steel drum ensemble with a rhythm section. The group has performed all over the state of Mississippi, the south and even in the Caribbean Islands of the Baha- mas. Students in the ensemble learn to play a variety of styles, many of which are not often played in the marching or jazz band, including , soca, calypso, rock and . CALL NOW TO SCHEDULE A TOUR.

Holmes Community College Percussion Ensemble The Holmes Community College Percussion Ensemble performs a wide variety of music performed on percussion instruments. Occasionally, non - percussion instruments such as the guitar, bass, or keyboard are used. Literature that the group has performed has included classical music, heavy metal, jazz, and even music written for non traditional instruments such as trashcans. The group has performed at various indoor drum line competitions and Percussive Arts Society sponsored events.

Holmes Community College Concert Band The HCC Concert band meets in the spring semester, and focuses on traditional concert band literature. The band performs on the annual spring concert. Members of the concert band receive a generous scholarship. GUITAR Guitar Majors are required to earn 64 semester hours in addition to band or choir for the AA degree. The courses for the major include music theory, guitar lessons, music survey, recital class and class piano. There are numerous performance opportunities on campus in other ensembles: Guitar Ensemble, Choir, Marching band, Jazz band, Percussion ensemble and Steel band.

For those wanting to take guitar without majoring in music, Holmes offers Guitar for Non-Majors. This course is sequenced so that a total of 4 semester hours may be earned as electives.
