    Shaping Brazil: The Role of International Migration By Ernesto Friedrich Amaral, University of Texas at Austin Wilson Fusco, Universidade Estadual de Campinas June 2005 Since its founding in 1500 by Portuguese colonists, Brazil, the largest country in South America with over 184 million people, has had a strong immigrant presence. The composition of the population has been greatly influenced by distinct waves of immigrants at different moments in history. Much of this immigration, in turn, has been tied to economic factors. Over time, Brazil's governments have encouraged migration flows to fill its vast territory and boost agricultural production. The first wave, coordinated by Portugal, brought Portuguese migrants and slaves from Africa. In recent periods, the government implemented policies to encourage migration from Germany, Italy (mostly at the end of the 19th century) and Japan (mostly at the beginning of the 20th century) to interior areas of the southern states of São Paulo, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. To this day, economic developments such as South America's common market are driving migration, with undocumented immigrants from neighboring countries accounting for the majority of new arrivals. The government has no policies encouraging immigration. At the same time, no policy has been created to discourage or prevent illegal immigrants from entering. Past Migration Flows During Portugal's early rule, immigration to Brazil (from countries other than Portugal) was prohibited because the Portuguese wanted to prevent other European countries from establishing claims to territory. France was unsuccessful in establishing a colony at present-day Rio de Janeiro, and the Dutch were forced tp leave Brazil in 1645 after setting up colonies in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.

Tracing nineteenth and early twentieth-century discourses of Mennonite colonies in Imperial e essay advocates a reevaluation of theories of modern statehood advanced by thinkers like James C. Scott and Ernest Gellner. As conservative, pacifist Mennonites traveled from North America to the Paraguayan Chaco to escape the pressures of assimilation in democratic society, their migration paved the way for coreligionists fleeing persecution in the Soviet Union to join internationally, characterized by deep religious observance, and conceived in opposition to high modernist projects. This research study aims to empirically address the political dynamics reflected on Paraguay’s print press during the 2013 elections campaign. Method. This empirical study is based on the social network analysis of the name references included in a sample of news articles. Results. The results of the study include several graphical representations of the coverage of political actors during the 2013 elections campaign, which was strongly conditioned by the previous impeachment and removal of former President Fernando Lugo. Conclusions. This study of name references confirms the continuity of the traditional parties in Paraguay as institutions with political and media power, and the secondary and peripheral role of the actors that emerged in the political landscape when Fernando Lugo won the presidency of Paraguay.

    Paraguay (from Wikipedia) Paraguay (/ˈpærəɡwaɪ/; Spanish pronunciation: [paɾaˈɣwaj]; Guarani: Paraguái, [paɾaˈɰwaj]), officially the Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay; Guarani: Tetã Paraguái), is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, which runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as Corazón de Sudamérica ("Heart of South America").[9] Paraguay is one of the two landlocked countries (the other is Bolivia) outside Afro-Eurasia, and is the smallest[10] landlocked country in the Americas. The indigenous Guaraní had been living in eastern Paraguay for at least a millennium before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Western Paraguay, the Gran Chaco, was inhabited by nomads of whom the Guaycuru peoples were the most prominent. In the 17th century, Jesuit missions introduced Christianity and Spanish culture to the region. Paraguay was a peripheral colony of the Spanish Empire, with few urban centers and settlers. Following independence from Spain in 1811, Paraguay was ruled by a series of dictators who generally implemented isolationist and protectionist policies. Following the disastrous Paraguayan War (1864–1870), the country lost 60 to 70 percent of its population through war and disease, and about 140,000 square kilometers (54,000 sq mi), one quarter of its territory, to Argentina and Brazil. Through the 20th century, Paraguay continued to endure a succession of authoritarian governments, culminating in the regime of Alfredo Stroessner, who led South America's longest- lived military dictatorship from 1954 to 1989.

Smith Introduction Our intent here is to review research completed to date on our subject and to call attention to topics which seem particularly promising for future investigation. We have limited our concern to research on Japanese in the Americas and Hawaii, feeling that materials on Japanese in other areas are too fugitive or the issues they concern too parochial to justify inclusion in this brief review. Migration from Japan began in 1868, the year of the Restoration. Al- though Japan strove to resettle large numbers of excess proletarians in Manchukuo and other areas under her political control in the interwar period, the most successful, lasting and best documented migrations were to other regions of the world and seem to bear no relation to the Empire's colonial ambitions. Well above a million, and possibly five million, Japa- nese went abroad during this period for reasons other than tourism and governmental foreign service (Ichihashi 1932: 12; Ota 1968: 1). Foreign reaction to the image of Japan presented by immigrants abroad has tended to be mixed and in general far less favorable than that produced by Jap- anese achievements in the arts, letters, technology, and scholarship. The body of literature on emigration and the Japanese abroad is vast, but it is uneven in quality and displays little thematic consistency. One of its promi- nent characteristics is a pulse-like pattern over time as the intensity of scholarly interest in migration rose and fell according to the intensity of concern felt by receiving nations over strategies of accepting and exporting immigrants and over the treatment of resident Japanese minorities.

Some countries place a greater emphasis on water education than others. This thesis explores the educational system in Paraguay, with a particular focus on environmental education and water. Coupling my work as a Peace Corps/Paraguay Environmental Education Volunteer and my participation with Project WET, a nonprofit organization that specializes in the development of water education activities, I compiled country specific information on the water resources of Paraguay and used this information to adapt 11 Project WET Mexico activities to the Paraguayan classroom. There were many cultural and social factors that were considered in the adaption process, such as language and allotted time for lessons. These activities were then presented in a series of teacher workshops in three different locations to further promote water education in Paraguay. This abstract accurately represents the content of the candidate’s thesis. I recommend its publication. LADB Article Id: 80253 ISSN: 1060-4189 Current and Former Presidents Seek New Terms in Paraguay by Andrés Gaudín Category/Department: Paraguay Published: 2017-03-31 Paraguay’s last two constitutional presidents––Nicanor Duarte Frutos (2003-2008) and Fernando Lugo (2008-2012)––and the current head of state, Horacio Cartes, are pushing the country’s institutional structure to a dangerous limit: Without any agreement from political structures or the judicial branch, the elections set for April 22, 2018, paradoxically could constitute a new assault on democracy. This fear has been expressed by political analysts from all Paraguayan media outlets except those that belong to Grupo Cartes (NotiSur, Dec. 11, 2015, and March 3, 2017). Article 229 of the Paraguayan Constitution is vague regarding the reelection of a president, and its language can be interpreted in different ways, depending on one’s interests. Would-be candidates are campaigning while analysts debate whether the issue of presidential re-election should be addressed with a constitutional amendment, by calling for a constitutional assembly to reform Article 229, or by allowing the Supreme Court to have the final word on what the wording of the article actually means.
