Tracing nineteenth and early twentieth-century discourses of Mennonite colonies in Imperial e essay advocates a reevaluation of theories of modern statehood advanced by thinkers like James C. Scott and Ernest Gellner. As conservative, pacifist Mennonites traveled from North America to the Paraguayan Chaco to escape the pressures of assimilation in democratic society, their migration paved the way for coreligionists fleeing persecution in the Soviet Union to join internationally, characterized by deep religious observance, and conceived in opposition to high modernist projects. Preservings $20.00 No. 20, June, 2002 “A people who have not the pride to record their own history will not long have the virtues to make their history worth recording; and no people who are indifferent to their past need hope to make their future great.” — Jan Gleysteen Chortitza “Old” Colony, 1789 The story of the first settlement of the Flemish Mennonites at the junc- tion of the Chortitza and Dnjepr Riv- ers in 1789 in Imperial Russia is re- plete with drama, tension and trag- edy. It is no small task to establish a peaceful Christian community in an undeveloped steppe and to create an environment where the pioneers and their descendants could thrive and prosper. Within a century the Chortitza “Old” Colony had become perhaps the most prosperous com- munity in the area north of the Black Sea and its industries were leading the way in the region’s booming economy. After some initial faltering the Chortitza Flemish Gemeinde was to become the most stable and flourish- ing of the Mennonites in Russia. It is a precious gift of God to build a large congregation of 4000 and more mem- bers out of a population originating from different Gemeinden and vari- ous regions in the Vistula Delta in Royal Poland and West Prussia. The Teacher Trainer Programme Final Project, 10 credits Spring 2005 ______________________________________________________________ Course: Pedagogiskt arbete C Language and Identity at School and at Home Language Shift among Mennonites in Paraguay Author: Linda Hiebert Supervisor: Una Cunningham Language and Identity at School and at Home Language Shift among Mennonites in Paraguay Abstract This essay has investigated the question of an ongoing language shift from Plattdeutsch and German to Spanish among the Mennonites in Paraguay and the role of the school in this process. The aims of the study were to compare the use of languages among the Mennonites in Asuncion and in the Menno colony and to identify the importance that parents give to the languages and to compare this with a school leader perspective. The aim was also to identify factors that influence the language shift and identify the influence that the shift excerpts on Mennonite values and identity. The results are based on my own observations, interviews with Mennonite women and interviews with key informants who have insight into the school policy issues. The outcome may be used as a basis for educational and language planning. There is a need to consciously sit down and re-define the Mennonite identity and to make the community and the school aware of their responsibility in language maintenance. Formerly we were strangers to each other and now we feel so close. One can sense this. in Ger- many, Holland, the United States of America and Canada— C.F. KLASSEN.1 <HE SETTLING down in congregational communities and Tthe resultant inward look was rudely disturbed in the fall of 1929 by two international crises, which shook not only the Menno- nites but also much of the western world. The ruthless implementa- tion by Joseph Stalin of his first Five-Year Plan2 sent thousands of Mennonites and other German-speaking colonists fleeing to Moscow in a desperate attempt to escape to the West.3 Their exodus, however, was at that very time held up because countries like Canada would not accept any more immigrants, no matter how destitute, because of the national anti-immigration mood, which was strongly reinforced by the international economic depression. It is an irony of history that relatively good things often arise from adverse situations, and such was the case for the Mennonites in 1929. Responding to the plight of co-religionists in Russia, the world Mennonite community experienced a new international awareness and a new sense ofpeoplehood, which had formerly escaped them in their separated communities, nationally and denominationally. -

Preservings $20.00 No. 22, June, 2003 “A people who have not the pride to record their own history will not long have the virtues to make their history worth recording; and no people who are indifferent to their past need hope to make their future great.” — Jan Gleysteen Our Flemish Roots - A Century of Struggle Notwithstanding the most severe perse- cution of the Reformation, the Mennonite Church survived in Flanders from 1530 until 1650. Three-quarters of the 1204 martyrs in the Spanish Netherlands were Menno- nites (almost half of them women) as op- posed to the Reformed (Calvinist) faith. As many as seventy percent of the martyrs in Ghent, Bruges, and Coutrai were Menno- nites. Two-thirds of the martyrs from the Lowlands documented in T. J. van Braght’s 1660 Martyrs’ Mirror were Flemish. “For the Flemish followers of Menno Simons it was `a century of struggle,’” writes histo- rian A.L.E. Verheyden. Where the brother- hood of the Northern Netherlands soon di- vided under the influence of the individual- ism of elders, “....the severe repression in the South saw the Mennonites rallying anx- iously around the church and expecting from it the greatest blessing,” Anabaptism in Flanders (Scottdale, Pa., 1961), page 9. During this time a steady stream of refu- gees left Flanders and Brabant fleeing to Holland and Friesland with many eventu- ally settling in the Vistula Delta where they were known as the “Clerken” (clear, pure het Gravensteen, Ghent.
