THE TRANSFORMATION OF PUSHKIN'S EUGENE ONEGIN INTO TCHAIKOVSKY'S OPERA Molly C. Doran A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Megan Rancier © 2012 Molly Doran All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Since receiving its first performance in 1879, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s fifth opera, Eugene Onegin (1877-1878), has garnered much attention from both music scholars and prominent figures in Russian literature. Despite its largely enthusiastic reception in musical circles, it almost immediately became the target of negative criticism by Russian authors who viewed the opera as a trivial and overly romanticized embarrassment to Pushkin’s novel. Criticism of the opera often revolves around the fact that the novel’s most significant feature—its self-conscious narrator—does not exist in the opera, thus completely changing one of the story’s defining attributes. Scholarship in defense of the opera began to appear in abundance during the 1990s with the work of Alexander Poznansky, Caryl Emerson, Byron Nelson, and Richard Taruskin. These authors have all sought to demonstrate that the opera stands as more than a work of overly personalized emotionalism. In my thesis I review the relationship between the novel and the opera in greater depth by explaining what distinguishes the two works from each other, but also by looking further into the argument that Tchaikovsky’s music represents the novel well by cleverly incorporating ironic elements as a means of capturing the literary narrator’s sardonic voice. -

Summary After the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania in 1990, investigations into the Soviet period were not a sphere at- tracting intellectual forces in Lithuania. In recent years studies into Soviet-era literature have been gathering full speed, though there is still a shortage of important academic works. The present book is an attempt to record what has not been entered into any docu- ment – relationships between the men of letters, assessments of the events that have been preserved only in memory. Due to political reasons stories and reminiscences about that period might be even more important than those about other periods, and the equations of behaviour and choices contain more unknown quantities than a more ‘usual’ context might have. Official discourse, an institutional network, the positions held, literary awards and other kind of public and official life were at variance with the naturally formed relation- ships between people, which most likely were even more significant and influential in the cultural processes of that time than the official ones. Furthermore, according to Pierre Bourdieu, ‘One of the major difficulties in the social history of philosophy, art or literature is that it has to reconstruct these spaces of original possibles which, because they were part of the self-evident givens of the situation, remain un- remarked and are therefore unlikely to be mentioned in contempo- rary accounts, chronicles, or memoirs. It is difficult to conceive of the vast amount of information which is linked to membership of a field and which all contemporaries immediately invest in their reading of works: information about institutions – e.g. -

Exploring works by Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Faddei Bulgarin, I view tropes such as spending, counterfeiting, hoarding, and gambling, as well as plots of mad or blocked ambition, in relation to the cultural and economic history of Nicholas I’s reign and in the context of the importation of economic discourse and literary conventions from abroad. Both Martin Heidegger and Jean Paul Sartre, for example, perceive that nothing is part-and-parcel of (man’s) being. The present study adopts a similar position concerning nothing and its essential relationship to being, but adds a third element: that of writing narrative. This relationship between nothing and narrative is, I argue, established in the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, Mikhail Bakhtin, Jacques Derrida, and Julia Kristeva. As Heidegger and Sartre position nothing as essential to the creation of being, so Nietzsche, Bakhtin, Derrida, and Kristeva figure nothing as essential to the production of narrative. -

Resolving everything with a passage from the Gospels is just as arbitrary as dividing the prisoners into five categories. Why five and not ten? Why a passage from the Gospels and not from the Koran? First you have to make people believe in the Gospels, make them believe that they are the truth, and then you can resolve everything with a passage from them. (Anton Chekhov)1 Fyodor Dostoevsky was a Russian Orthodox believer for whom the image of Christ was a “symbol of faith” so powerful that he would choose it over proven truth.2 So it would seem surprising that neither Orthodox symbols, dogma, and ritual, nor the iconic image of Christ figure prominently in the writer’s great novels.3 At key moments, the verifiable markers of the Orthodox faith recede and give way to more dangerous elements: Maria Timofeevna Lebiadkina’s occult obsessions, for exam- ple, or the pagan motifs surrounding Alyosha Karamazov’s fall to the 1 Anton Chekhov, writing about Lev Tolstoy’s novel Resurrection in a letter to Mikhail O.
