April is a lovely month – we are leaving the high heat of the summer and the winds have died down. But it is always a good idea to do a weather check before you fly! Cape Town’s geography means we can have many weather patterns in one day depending where we are on the Peninsula. Pack accordingly for our activities and variable weather. Page | 3 DAY 1 Today will be an easy day of walking and sightseeing – allowing you a chance to recover from the flight. Taking a slow drive from Noordhoek, along the world famous Chapman’s Peak through Hout Bay, along the Atlantic Seaboard we wil make our way to “THE TABLE”. 12.30 TABLE MOUNTAIN One of the world’s most famous mountainous landmarks, Table Mountain was recently awarded status as one of the “ New7Wonders of Nature”. Summiting via the Cable Car, we will be rewarded with a 360 degree of the city, Atlantic seaboard, Table Bay, the nearby peaks of the surrounding mountains and the rest of the Table Mountain National Park. The tour route includes the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africa’s freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The Garden was originally created in the 1650’s by the region’s first European Settlers and provided fertile grounds to grow fresh produce to replenish ships rounding the Cape. Proclaimed for public use in 1848 The Gardens are abutted by numerous important landmarks and are now enjoyed for the sheer beauty of its flora and the allure of its historic setting. 2.30 – 4.30 CITY CENTER WALKING TOUR This interactive guided walking tour will take us from the Company Gardens around the City centre and includes a visit to locations such as the Slave Auction tree, Postal Stone, Adderley Street flower sellers, Greenmarket Square, St Georges Cathedral, Bokaap Mosques, The Slave Lodge, Parliament and a viewing of part of the Berlin Wall. 5.30 PM SUNSET DRINKS AND DINNER IN CAMPS BAY Set against the impressive backdrop of the Twelve Apostles mountain range, Camps Bay beach is one of Cape Town’s most beautiful beaches. Page | 7 DAY 4 11.30 – 2.30 CAPE POINT NATURE RESERVE We will travel from the hotel, through Noordhoek and along the breathtaking route of Misty Cliffs to Cape Point. We will have time to wander around and walk (or buy a ticket on the Flying Dutchman Funicular) to the Lighthouse to take in the panoramic views. There will be an opportunity to listen to a free audio tour, take lots of photos, shop for curios, and enjoy lunch on the outdoor terrace of the Two Oceans Restaurant where we can soak up the sun and some of the most breathtaking ocean and mountain scenery in the world! 3.00 PENGUIN PADDLE Simons Town Using stable, easy to paddle two person kayaks, and guided with our personal instructor, we will launch into the cool, clear sparkling water of the Atlantic Ocean, and weave our way through the rocky pools and outcrops around Boulders Beach and explore the waterways of this fascinating penguin colony.

Sleutelwoorde: Adderleystraat; blommemark; blommeverkopers; Kaapstad; kultuurgeskiedenis; snyblomme; toerisme; veldblomme. Cape Town is probably synonymous with Table Mountain. But one of the colourful scenes at the foot of the mountain may also be described as synonymous with the city: Adderley Street’s “famous” fl ower market. Yet, although the fl ower sellers are part of Cape Town’s living history, a beacon for tourists, and literally contributes to the Mother City’s vibrant and colourful life, they represent a dying breed. Where do they come from, and more importantly, what is their future? This descriptive article within the paradigm of microhistory is, thus far known, a fi rst social scientifi c exploration of the history of this unique group of Capetonians, the origins of the fl ower market, and its fl ower legacy.

  • Parker Cottage's Walking Tour of Central Cape Town
Parker Cottage’s Walking Tour of Central Cape Town The City Bowl in Cape Town is a truly wondrous thing. Unlike many colonial city centres, it has a distinct lack of the ubiquitous Western chain stores and manages in large part to retain several tiny and very specialized shops, eateries, galleries, theatres, hotels and bars that would simply not survive in a pressured rental environment in a modern industrialized city. NB. Please take a look at the back page for some important notes before you go on this tour. This tour takes you to: 09h15 Kloof Street – vibey heart of Gardens and the ‘let’s do lunch’ crowd. 09h30 The Long Street Baths – historic Turkish baths and pool 09h45 The Company’s Garden – superb, ornate, city centre park. 10h15 St. George’s Cathedral – Tutu’s centre of resilience. 10h15 The Slave Lodge – how Cape Town and its people came to be 11h00 The District Six Museum – an inspirational piece of history 11h30 Greenmarket Square – bustling African craft market 12h00 Long Street – the ‘anything goes’ street from dawn till dusk (and dusk till dawn) 12h30 The Bo Kaap – the cultural home of the Cape Malay community 13h00 The Waterkant – design and chic abound in this gay friendly quarter 13h30 The Waterfront – love it or hate it, Cape Town’s answer to Sydney harbour Take a cab home to Parker Cottage. • Background Information on the Slave Route Challenge: Cape Town Was
Background information on the Slave Route Challenge: Cape Town was built by the enslaved and apprentices from Indonesia and Malaysia and many Capetonians trace their ancestors through them. It was the dream of Farouk Meyer, founder member of the Itheko Sport AC to have a race that traces the footsteps of our ancestors in the Western Cape by incorporating the BoKaap and District Six. A running event with the purpose of raising awareness about our history and our heritage and the ‘Slave Route Challenge’ was born. The Inaugural SRC was in 2011 and 2018 sees its 8th year! This event is hosted by the Itheko Sport AC, under the auspices of Western Province Athletics (WPA) and organized by Itheko Event Management. Leliebloem House is the Race Beneficiary. There are 4 different events: Half Marathon (21.1km) 10km Run 10km Big Walk 5km Fun Run / Walk. This way we can incorporate the novice, the occasional walker, the intermediate runner and the avid runner. The Slave Route Challenge is unique in that it is a race with a heritage and historic significance that takes you from The City Hall through District 6, Gardens, Company Gardens, Wale Street, BoKaap, Sea Point, Green Point, CBD and back down Darling Street into the Castle of Good Hope and the finish on the Grand Parade. In BoKaap the runners and walkers enjoy a traditional Cape Malay Koesister! A sweet spicy delicacy! This event always happens on Mothers’ Day! This event brings Cape Town together from all walks of life. It truly encapsulates the spirit of Ubunthu! Runners and walkers are given the opportunity to run and walk in District Six and the BoKaap, to marvel at the beauty and cultural diversity of Cape Town, to experience the heritage sites, to run through the Castle of Good Hope, to appreciate our cultural diversity and to embrace other Capetonians.
