They continued to hold on to what they thought was right, putting their hope and trust in God, whether or not he rescued them from the fiery furnace into which they were to be thrown.

For the first time since 1935, contraceptives could be imported, distributed and sold within Ireland.1 This legislation was enacted at a time when many European states had introduced far reaching reforms on matters of sexual morality. Britain had decriminalised homosexuality, legalised abortion and liberalised access by unmarried women to contraception. Consequently, ‘reproduction could be treated as entirely separate from and irrelevant to female sexual pleasure’.2 For Ireland, the changes in Catholic Europe were of particular significance. France legalised contraception in 1967 and abortion in 1975 (‘loi Veil’). The Italian parliament and electorate endorsed divorce and abortion despite opposition from the Catholic Church and the dominant Christian Democratic Party. However, within the Church, there was also a parallel strategy of engagement with republican leaders. This latter strategy was primarily pursued through the Redemptorist Order in Belfast where there existed a belief that the Catholic Church had a responsibility wider than just condemnation of the Republican Movement. This article examines the role of the Redemptorist Order based on interviews with Fr Alex Reid, the main architect of its strategy, and through access to private documents prepared as the Irish government first became involved in the peace process in the late 1980s. The article concludes that the Redemptorists made a significant political contribution to establishing and developing the peace process in Northern Ireland. 1 THE UNITY OF THE CHURCH: WHAT CAN WE REALISTICALLY ACHIEVE NOW? (Keynote address by the Rev’d Professor James Haire to the Annual Meeting of the Tasmanian Council of Churches - Saturday 14th May, 2005). I pose for myself the question: The unity of the Church: What can we realistically achieve now? and I want to look at it from a number of aspects. But I want to begin with two personal experiences of my own which relate to my own experience of ecumenism. The first occurred when I was a student. At that time, I was studying in Oxford, but for some strange reason I ended up as chairperson of the youth committee of the Irish Churches, the Youth Department of the Irish Council of Churches in the heady days of the student movement. A friend of mine, a young woman who was studying in Cambridge, an Anglican, was appointed as the secretary. She, incidentally, when the Church of England is inspired by the Spirit to consecrate women as bishops, will become one of the first. One summer, we had a conference at a country house in the middle of Ireland. It was the beginnings of the troubles in the North, and the two of us produced a paper for this conference. All the church leaders from around Ireland were there. We were in a difficult situation in Ireland. Willem Visser ’t Hooft, the first General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, had referred to Ireland as “an ecumenical wasteland”, a place where anything ecumenical would die before it was planted.

MONSIGNOR MICHAEL LEDWITH The Inquiry has received infonnation about concerns expressed in relation to Monsignor Michael Ledwith in 1983/84 by a group of seminarians in St Patrick's College Maynooth. The Inquiry has also received infonnatioil about allegations of sexual abuse made against Monsignor Ledwith in 1994 and 2000 (4.6.1, 4.6.2 and 4.6.3). St Patrick's College Maynooth is a body corporate in civil and Canon law. It was founded in 1795 as a seminary for the education of Catholic priests. It is also a pontifical university and was from 1910 until 1997 a recognised college of the National University of Ireland. The University Act 1997 established the college as an autonomous institution under civil law entitled, "The National University of Ireland, Maynooth. " During the period relevant to this Inquiry, Maynooth was governed by the Statutes of St Patrick's College which were adopted in October 1962. The College was led by a President and two Vice Presidents. In 1980, Monsignor Michael Ledwith was appointed as Vice President. He had been on the staff of Maynooth from 1971. The details of the concerns that were expressed against Monsignor Michael Ledwith in 1983/84 were discussed with a group of six former seminarians who attended the Inquiry, three of whom are now ordained priests. These seminarians had come to Maynooth as mature students. Within a number of years they each had concerns about the running of Maynooth and the training they were receiving for their priesthood. Their concerns had different aspects: they felt that inadequate emphasis was placed on spiritual values; they were shocked by what they saw or believed to be the lavish and worldly lifestyle of Monsignor Ledwith and they were concerned about the'infonnation or rumours that might have suggested that the Monsignor had a homosexual orientation.

It was the first official meeting between the Member Churches of the Irish Council of The Preparatory Years 3 Churches and the Irish Episcopal Conference and is thus an historic event. - Rev Michael Hurley SJ The period since 1973 40 This first Meeting led to a process of ecumenical encounters and co- operation which has grown in intensity over the twenty-five years. - Rev Dr Ian Ellis Proposals are currently before the Churches which could lead to a further stage of development in interchurch relations. To commemorate the 25th Anniversary the Irish Inter-Church Committee commissioned two reflective essays. The first is by the Rev Michael Hurley SJ and it seeks to place the first Irish Inter-Church Meeting in the context of broader ecumenical developments of that time. The second is by the Rev Dr Ian Ellis who seeks to bring the story up to the present. We thank them for what they have done and hope that their work will be of interest to all those who are interested in the development of Irish ecumenism. The story of ecumenism in Ireland has been intertwined with that of `The Troubles' over the last twenty-five years, particularly in Northern Ireland.
