ABSTRACT Audiovisual language is a syncretic language, and over its one century of development, it has been, and still is, characterized by remediation and hybridization. In that sense, the advent of digital content production and circulation technologies has enabled progress in newly expressive ways of audiovisual making. Thus, interactive video clips, a digital environment native format, are, in fact, a hybrid product, expressing themselves in remedied media, which allow for a language syncretism that is distinct from the textualization forms developed in audiovisual communication until then. The main goal in this thesis is to understand the interactive video clip phenomena from the remediation and hybridization processes and the mechanisms arising from articulating different significance systems, through the language syncretism perspective, as postulated on discursive semiotics. For corpus constitution, there has been a mapping of the first decade of interactive video clips (2007-2016), totalizing 152 projects, which have been subsequently systematized and made available through a database at the website: https://interactivemusicvideo.blogspot.com/. A bibliographical review of remediation and hybridization concepts allows us to define, in the first part of this paper, the main architectures that are present in those video clips, pointing out to the need of investigating the role of language syncretism in enunciative strategies focused on interaction meaning effects production. With the discursive semiotics theoretical input on language syncretism, form a Hjelmslevian matrix, this thesis proposes an approach that considers languages as functive on the semiotic function in the syncretization process. Analysis has concluded that, in every interactive video clip project, interactivity is built by manifested languages in the visual field, by relating them to each other and/or to the languages that are manifested in the audio field. Research has shown that, in interactive video clips, the hyper-audiovisual, a new form of remediation and hybridization, is provided by digital convergence. Remediation between analogical and digital means produces specific architectures such as games, mixing, browsing and an interactive narrative from hybridization procedures, besides creating interactive strategies in syncretic articulations, guided by that new remediation and hybridization rationale. Another focal point is related to the production flow of those video clips. In most of the projects, research has shown that the interactivity process occurs during the synchronic execution of the visual and the audible, although, in some video clips, interactivity is built beyond the music flow. In those cases, the production of sophisticated interface for elaborating manipulable visual and audio elements occurs, building a hypermediatic atmosphere. It has also been shown that interactive video clips are not only audiovisually edited, but they are articulated with computational programming. That rationale allows us to affirm that such interactive audiovisual format is a unique expressive form on the internet, being one of the first expressions that indicate the development of an own particular language for digital media. Keywords: Interactive music video; Remediation; Hybridism; Language Syncretism. LISTA DE FIGURAS Figura 1 – Cenas do videoclipe interativo

  • TREE of CLUES: a Packet for Popheads
TREE OF CLUES: a packet for popheads Written by Kevin Kodama 1. In one song by this artist, a background clicking noise slows down as she sings “I found another way / To caress my day”. One of this artist’s videos is a single shot of her as both a giant goddess and tiny dancers that slowly zooms out. A track by this artist that she described as “a medieval march through the destruction of a relationship” laments “I never thought that you would be the one to tie me down”. This artist asks “Why don’t I do it for you” in a video that showcases her pole-dancing skills, and she explained a part of her name as “a selection of letters that sounded... masculine and strong”. For ten points, name this artist who released “Cellophane” for her 2019 album MAGDALENE. ANSWER: FKA twigs (accept Taliah Debrett Barnett) 2. This song’s heavily ad-libbed bridge includes the James Brown-inspired lyric “Good God! I can’t help it!”. In the music video for this song, the artist crawls on the ground sporting white polka dotted lipstick. This song begins with a series of tongue clicking and a breathy “yeah” along with some funky guitars. The video for this song uses pink, purple, and blue lighting in a scene where the artist runs between a male flirt and Tessa Thompson. This song’s artist describes herself as “an emotional sexual bender”, which is a nod to her pansexuality. For ten points, name this top r/popheads track of 2018, a Janelle Monae song that was the lead single for the album Dirty Computer.

Rachel: And this is Wonderful! Griffin: I feel like you hit the ―L‖ in our last name, like really hard that time. And I almost never do it—perform it that way, or hear it that way? Rachel: It gets—there‘s a lot of vowels in there, and it gets kind of mumble-y? Griffin: Right. Rachel: And so I—I try really hard to kind of say each syllable precisely. Griffin: And I appreciate that! It shows a certain r—like, reverence— Rachel: [laughs] Griffin: —for the brand. [laughs] Rachel: I‘m relatively new to this last name. Griffin: I know! And I—I—you know, I stumble in like a drunkard off the street, like… ―I‘m Mackaroy. I'm Mackaroy.‖ Rachel: [laughs] Mm-hmm. Griffin: It could be spelled any which way. Rachel: Mm-hmm. Griffin: There may or may not be an ―L‖ in there. But you come in here with your eloquent diction… Rachel: Thank you! Griffin: And you just smash it right out of the freaking park, man. Rachel: Thank you so much. Griffin: Now your first name, you could use some help with that. Your first name, you could— Rachel: Oh yeah? Do I stumble through that? But… I’m afraid that if you get on that plane... JACK: Look, we're at the airport and no one ever thinks clearly at the airport so we should just trust the decision we already made. You've been accepted to one of the best law schools in the country, I've got this internship at Barclay's Bank. We have a great plan, honey... KATE: You want to do something great, Jack? Let's flush the plan... let’s start our lives right now, today... I mean I have no idea what this life's gonna look like but I do know it has both of us in it. And I choose us. The plan doesn't make us great, Jack. What we have together, that's what makes us great.
