Transfer to Tazara Station. 12:00 The train departs Dar es Salaam and travels the TAZARA line. Guests may freshen up in their suites before joining fellow travellers in the lounge car or observation car, which will be at the front of the train for the first 72 hours – a different aspect that our rail enthusiasts enjoy. 13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train travels the fertile lands of Tanzania towards the Selous. 16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Fuga Halt. Dress: Formal UPDATED 24 AUGUST 2019 DAY 2 SELOUS GAME RESERVE 05:30 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until departure. 07:00 Game visit in the Selous Game Reserve, the largest in Africa at 55 000km² (time permitting). 12:30 Return to the train. 13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train passes the Udzungwa Mountains. 16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Mlimba. Dress: Formal Victoria Falls It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the list of activities available: Tour of Falls; helicopter over Falls; walk with lions; whitewater rafting; bungee-jumping; golf. You may book these excursions yourself at the hotel OR beforehand on the train with the on-board lecturer – today between 17:00-18:30. Cash accepted. The train ascends the escarpment negotiating the hills and valleys with dramatic tunnels, switchbacks and viaducts. 09:00 Arrive at Makambako where guests may enjoy an optional stroll through the town – time permitting. 13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train passes forests of Baobabs. 16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Mbeya and Tunduma. The train travels in a southwesterly direction. 14:30 Disembark at Kasama for an excursion to Chisimba Falls. Depart Kasama at 18:00. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Mununga. Dress: “African” Theme or Smart Casual DAY 5 AT LEISURE Victoria Falls: If you have decided to book activities through the on-board lecturer, please ensure you have done so before dinner. After breakfast the train crosses the Kafue railway bridge – a 477-metre long steel girder truss bridge of 13 spans each at 33 metres supported on concrete piers. 13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train travels to Zimbabwe. 16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Makoli. Dress: Formal DAY 7 VICTORIA FALLS Please pack a small overnight bag for the stay at Victoria Falls Hotel. Tog bags have been placed in your suite for your convenience. See Inclusions/Exclusions. Lunches and dinner are taken at the Victoria Falls Hotel. Currency exchange available at hotel (passports not required); there is a business centre and WiFi available throughout. If you are crossing the border into Zambia during your stay, please obtain your passport from the Train Manager/Gift Shop. 07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. Arrive at Livingstone for Zambian border formalities. 10:00 Cross the bridge and arrive at Zimbabwean border for passport formalities. 11:00 Arrive at the incomparable Victoria Falls. Disembark with overnight bag and walk across to the hotel. Welcome address on the lawn followed by lunch at Jungle Junction. Luggage will be delivered to the rooms. 15:45 WINTER / 16:15 SUMMER Meet in the hotel foyer before departure for the Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi. 19:30 Dinner is served at the Livingstone Room, Victoria Falls Hotel. Dress: Smart Casual (strictly no safari-wear, shorts, sandals or sneakers) DAY 8 VICTORIA FALLS Check-out time is normally at 10:00 (to be advised). If you have organised morning activities, please ensure you have checked out. Complimentary luggage storage at reception until afternoon departure. Please call the front desk and they will send a porter to collect your luggage. 06:30 Breakfast is served at the Jungle Junction Restaurant until 10:00. Day at leisure in the Victoria Falls. 12:00 Lunch at Jungle Junction Restaurant, Victoria Falls Hotel. 16:00 Meet on station platform. 17:00 Depart Victoria Falls. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Bulawayo. Please consult Lecture Sheet for details. 07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00 as the train travels towards Botswana. 11:20 Border formalities take place at Plumtree. 13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train heads southwards through Francistown and Serule, crosses the Tropic of Capricorn and continues via Mahalapye to Gaborone (the capital of Botswana). 16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal UPDATED 24 AUGUST 2019 DAY 10 MADIKWE Please pack a small overnight bag for the stay in Madikwe. See Inclusions/Exclusions. Spa facilities available (own account). Times of meals and activities are seasonal and will be reconfirmed on arrival. Transfer by coach to Madikwe Game Reserve for a two-night stay. Border formalities will take place en route and guests are required to present themselves to officials (luggage may be searched). Lunch is served upon arrival at the lodge. Afternoon tea and game drive (approximately 3 hours). 19:00 Dinner at the lodge. Dress: Casual DAY 11 MADIKWE Early morning game drive (approximately 3 hours). 07:00 Breakfast is served at the lodge until 09:30. 12:30 Lunch at the lodge. The train traverses the Magaliesberg Mountains – a range of low hills stretching 120 kilometres due east-west from Pretoria to Rustenberg. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Krugersdorp. Dress: Formal DAY 13 PRETORIA 07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. The train travels north through the goldfields. 10:00 Arrive at Rovos Rail’s private station in Capital Park. Disembark for city tour of Pretoria. 13:00 Lunch on the Rovos Rail platform followed by a walking tour of the station and the locomotive workshops (weather permitting). 15:00 Depart Pretoria and travel south towards Kimberley. 16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car. 19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Kingswood. Dress: Formal DAY 14 KIMBERLEY 07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 09:45. 09:30 Ten minutes before arriving in Kimberley, a shallow lake appears on the left-hand side of the train where, on occasion, there are spectacular flocks of Lesser Flamingos. 09:45 Arrive Kimberley. Disembark for a tour of the city, Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. 12:30 Depart Kimberley and continue on overnight through the Karoo via Beaufort West to Matjiesfontein.
