Historical Note The Asia Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles was formed in 2003 when the Center for East Asian Studies was combined with the Asia-Pacific Institute. Under the larger umbrella of UCLA's International Institute, the Asia Institute supports East Asian studies at UCLA and the surrounding community through the use of Title VI funds and by providing administrative support to the many centers at UCLA that promote Asian Studies. Additionally, the Asia Institute conducts a number of its own initiatives in support of Asian Studies. This includes coordinating events and carrying out activities in accordance with its responsibilities as a Title VI National Resource Center. While the Asia Institute and its many precursors have changed over the years, their relationship with University of Southern California's (USC) East Asian Studies Center has persisted since 1975. Together, they comprise the Joint East Asian Studies Center. It is under this entity that USC and UCLA applies for Title VI funds. As a Title VI National Resource Center, the Asia Institute supports East Asian Studies by administering fellowships to students and faculty, by supporting language and regional studies, by coordinating and organizing events such lectures and conference, and by conducting outreach to local K-12 institutions. In addition, the Institute administers a series of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships that provides students with funds to study abroad. R. Bin Wong was appointed Director of the Asia Institute in 2004 to replace Interim Director Richard Baum. Other faculty prominently involved in the Institute or its precursors include James Tong, Fred Notehelfer, Russell Campbell, and Lucie Cheng. Scope and Content Record Series 788 contains the records of the Asia Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles.
