Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Raymond,

We were holding our breath in September but we are now breathing easily! The annex building was finished by Labor Day and we welcomed our students on day one of class on September 9 as planned! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Our new annex is beautiful and state of the art in so many wonderful ways. Faculty and students have settled into their new home. I think it is safe to say that they are really enjoying the gift of Catholic education in this new setting. We thank the Parish of St. Raymond for its support and financial commitment and we continue to turn to you — alum and friends — for pledges and gifts. As we mentioned in prior newsletters, the parish pledged 50% of the cost of the building (about $4 million) and we are asking you to help with the other 50% (so far we have received pledges and gifts that amount to $1.5 million). We have made progress but there are a few miles still to go.

The annex building was officially blessed and dedicated on November 9 Hisby Eminence, Edward Cardinal Egan and it was an afternoon of prayer, conversation and humble pride. With so many Catholic schools struggling to stay open, we are certainly privileged to open a new school building for Catholic education. Again, we thank you for your support and we are ever grateful to the De La Salle Christian Brothers for their commitment to the parish. We ask that you support us with your time, talents and treasures as we begin our next 50 years of Catholic education in the Parkchester/Castle Hill section of .

Finally, we are stepping into a season of celebrations — Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas and New Year’s. We step gently into a season of peace and we thank God for that gift in our world, in our country and in our own lives. May the Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, change minds and hearts in our celebrations with family, friends and church. May you and your family enjoy the blessings of this holy season.

Sincerely,

Monsignor John Graham Pastor fromthe Principal

Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Raymond,

It is my privilege to welcome you back to another year of Catholic, Lasallian education at St. Raymond High School for Boys. The past year was full of tremendous accomplishments for our school community. We celebrated our 50th anniversary with alumni, students, parents and friends at many wonderful events. The Class of 2011 left us with some significant achievements! A 100% graduation rate, a 100% college acceptance/ attendance rate, $3.2 million dollars in college scholarships and a tremendous record of 12,000 hours of community service are all blessings. The Class of 2012 is geared up to follow in the footsteps of our alumni and make their own mark on the St. Raymond legacy.

We welcome some new faculty and staff members to our school community —Mr. Arthur Antosca, Ms. Idele Hernandez, Ms. Katrina Kob- losh and Mr. Frank Paonessa, a name from the past. We also welcome back Mr. Mario DiStefano as a consultant in our guidance department. They are already making an impact on the student body. Congratulations toMr. Ben Aguirre ’97, on his appointment as the Athletic Director.

Our students and faculty members are settling into the wonderful new addition that opened in September. This project has allowed us to significantly expand the Art and Music Departments, the Computer Science Department, the Science Department and our ability to increase college placements with our Guidance Department. In addition, every classroom in the school is now equipped with a SMART Board and a computer. You will find a list of donors and supporters who helped to make this initiative possible in this edition of the Raven Magazine. They are remembered regularly by our school community in Masses and prayer for their generosity. We offer a special word of thanks toMonsignor Graham and St. Raymond Church for their most generous support of the project. I would also like to thank Mr. Christopher Ellis and his staff for their dedicated work on the campaign. Remember that you too, can be part of the tremendous legacy that our school will make on future generations by donating to our Capital Campaign or Raven Fund.

Our theme for this year is the “Year of Excellence.” Come and visit St. Raymond so that you can see excellence in our academic courses, co- curricular activities, religious values, athletics and social growth on a daily basis. All of our young Ravens are enthusiastic about bringing the Lasallian, Catholic values that they are learning into the world. The school motto, “Recta Sapera” or “Do the Right Thing” is being lived out every day. The pages of this magazine give clear proof that our tradition is alive in the hearts of our students today.

I hope to see you at some of our upcoming events that you can read about in this issue of the Raven. As always, Go Ravens!

God bless,

Brother Daniel Gardner, FSC Principal

2 2011 - 2012 Year of Excellence For the past several years, the St. Raymond administration has selected a theme for the year, encouraging students, faculty, parents and alumni to truly live and work for a common Lasallian goal, day in and day out. This year, St. Raymond High School will work towards Excellence. The Year of Excellence will focus on achievement in academics, athletics, co-curriculars and community service. Some early examples of this focus on excellence can be found throughout this edition of the RAVEN. The National Honor Society

Guidance Day

The annual tradition of the St. Raymond High School Guidance Day continued on Wednesday, October 12 in an effort to provide each grade level with guidance activities throughout the day, prepping them for the coming year and beyond. Fresh- men students attended an assembly in the school gym entitled “An Introduction to Reality.” Motivational speaker Samuel Fields of Emmis Communications, affiliate of Hot 97 and Kiss FM, spoke to students about successful life choices. Sophomores took the ACT Prep Exam to get comfortable with the test prior to taking it as juniors. The junior class took the PSAT exam to prepare them for the SAT later this year. All of these standardized practice tests were taken in an effort to increase college readiness.

St. Raymond seniors spent the day visiting local colleges and universities with teachers, including Concordia University, Fairfield University, La Salle University, Manhattan College, Mercy College, Pace University and Universal Technical Institute. Thanks to the guidance department for their help in organizing and facilitating these events — Mr. Gregory Scott ‘72, Mr. Michael McCauley, Br. Annual Fall Open House

On Sunday, October 23, St. Raymond hosted its annual fall Open House for potential students in grades seven and eight, and their family members. With the new school extension officially open, the Open House afforded local elementary and middle school students a first glimpse at the new St. Raymond campus. Throughout the day, 225 families visited the school — the most attendees in recent history. Potential students and their parents were given a tour of the entire school, met with teachers and were able to ask current St. Raymond students questions about the school’s academics, religious values, co-curriculuars and athletics.

The current freshman class is comprised of 205 students, and with this turnout at Open House, the school is anticipating another large freshmen class in 2012.

For over 25 years, SSP has addressed the high school dropout crisis in by providing underserved students with a college preparatory, high school education. This program has provided thousands of dollars in scholarships to St. Raymond students.

This year, St. Raymond High School is an active participant in thementorship component of the SSP program. This program provides mentors to each of the 106 St. Raymond students (68 upperclassmen and 38 freshmen) receiving financial support from SSP. The students are paired with an individual mentor that will directly provide guidance, support and advice throughout the school year.

The mentoring program kicked off with a dinner in the St. Raymond High School cafeteria on Monday, September 19. New sponsors were given a brief orientation to the program and then were able to meet their student mentee and their families. More than 80 individuals attended this dinner, and other student/mentor activities are being planned for the year including the first varsity basketball game of the year.

6 Dangers of Social Networking Seminar

Students, alumni, parents and staff attended a social networking seminar at St. Raymond on Wednesday, October 19. “Living in the Digital Age” focused on ways to avoid the dangers of social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and YouTube. Users of these sites can be susceptible to bullying, stalking, harassment and inappropriate content – this seminar provided tips on how to stay protected online, in our very technological society.

The seminar was hosted byMr. Sal Lifrieri ’76. Mr. Lifrieri is the CEO and President of Protective Countermeasures & Consulting, Inc. He was the Director of Security and Intelligence Operations for the Office of Emergency Management under Rudolph Giuliani, the head of the Protective Operations Unit of NYC’s prestigious Municipal Security Section and is also a retired Detective First Grade of the NYPD.

The seminar defined social networking and explained how it can be used by criminals, stalkers, employers, universities and insurance companies, as well as how you can prevent being victimized.

Making a Difference: Annual Community Volunteer Day

St. Raymond High School for Boys took part in its Second Annual Community Volunteer Day on Saturday, October 22 by partnering with Bronx River Alliance and the MillionTreesNYC project. A mix of 25 faculty members, students, parents and alumni gathered together in Shoelace Park to plant more than 100 trees along the Bronx River. Together, volunteers planted several different types of trees including American Sycamores, Black Cherry, Eastern Red Cedar, Pen Oak, Red Oak and White Pines. Volunteers were treated to lunch and were even given their own tree to cultivate at home.

This volunteer event was an official part Makeof a Difference Day, a national day of doing good established by USA Weekend Magazine. The St. Raymond community was eager to be a part of such a great initiative in the Bronx.

This new annual tradition has been a wonderful addition to our school calendar and we are already brainstorming ideas for the Third Annual Community Volunteer Day. For more information about volunteering with St. Raymond High School for Boys, contact Genna Toye at [email protected].

Spring season will bring special meaning as the school retires long time coach and Athletic Director Mr. Ron Patnosh’s number ‘1’ jersey. A ceremony will take place at an alumni baseball day on Saturday, May 12. More details to come in the next issue of the RAVEN.

The Raven Cross Country team took home a number of medals at the first cross country meet on Monday, October 24 at Van Cortlandt Park. This year’s team is made up of 18 runners that are anticipating fast times and positive results at the upcoming New York sectionals and intersectionals. The Magazine for St. Raymond High School for Boys 13 MISSION In the Catholic tradition and the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle, St. Raymond High School for Boys, in collaboration with parents and the parish community, serves young men who reflect the economic, geographic and cultural diversity of the New York metropolitan area. Our school is a unique faith centered community that integrates thinking and believing in ways that encourage in- tellectual growth, nurture faith and inspire action. Administration, faculty and staff strive to touch the hearts of students through instruction that is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Live Jesus in our hearts...forever! 2010 – 2011 ST. RAYMOND HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS Annual Report Thank you to all of those listed in the following pages for your gifts during the 2010 – 2011 fiscal year (the charitable giving year is September 1 – August 31). St. Raymond High School for Boys regrets the omission of any names deserving of recognition in this report, and apologizes in advance for any such omissions. St. Raymond welcomes and encourages any corrections. Above all, St. Raymond is grateful to all its donors and their generosity, and for their belief in a St. Raymond education.

Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Raymond, It has certainly been a remarkable and record breaking 50th Anniversary year for St. Raymond High School for Boys. During the 2010 – 2011 school year, our Gala Dinner had more attendees than any of the school’s past fundraisers, the golf outing raised more money than in years past, the Raven Fund surpassed $200,000 raised for the first time and more alumni participated in school events than ever before. Taking into account class reunions, Raven road trips, homecoming, 50th Anniversary events and career day, we had more than 500 different alumni attending school events this year and another 200 graduates made gifts to the school this year.

Many thanks to all of those that have already made a gift to the 50th Anniversary Celebrate the Past. Rejoice the Present. Plan the Future. campaign. To date, we have had more than 150 gifts totaling $1.5 million! These donations have been put towards the completion of the new St. Raymond High School extension, renovation to the current school building including the science labs, and the creation of an endowment to benefit future generations of Ravens. If you have not made a gift yet, we still need your support to reach our goal of $1.75 million by the end of this school year. The generosity of the alumni and supporters of our school are evident as you walk around the building, with named classrooms and the Wall of Giving in our lobby. To learn more about making a gift to our tremendous 50th Anniversary campaign and to find out how to be included on the Wall of Giving, please Christopher Ellis, Director of Advancement, planting a tree at the St. Raymond Annual contact me at 718-824-5050 ext. 105 or [email protected]. Community Volunteer Day. We look forward to building on this 50th Anniversary momentum as we approach this new school year. You will see pictures of the new school extension scattered throughout this issue of the Raven. The pictures do not begin to do the school justice. The building is truly amazing and will provide our current students and future generations of Ravens with outstanding facilities as they continue on their academic journey through high school. We invite all alumni and friends of the school to come and see what the hype is about and take to a tour of the new St. Raymond High School for Boys. Please join us at homecoming, career day, golden gloves, a class reunion or just stop by for a visit when you are in the area. As alumni of the school open their hearts to provide for current and future students, the tagline of the campaign – Celebrate the Past. Rejoice the Present. Plan the Future. – certainly rings true. It has been a great 50th Anniversary year and I look forward to an even more successful 51st year!

Best Wishes,

Christopher Ellis Director of Advancement

Brother Andrew O’Gara, FSC Legacy Society “I’m confident that with your support this fine school will continue to thrive.” —Br. Andrew O’Gara, FSC

In 2006 St. Raymond High School for Boys created, in honor of a true leader and man of significance in St. Raymond High School for Boys’ history, an endowment scholarship fund in honor of Br. Andrew O’Gara, FSC. Commitment and strength are words synonymous with Br. Andrew. Upon his name and legacy the school is building and further ensuring its ability to serve the young men who pass through the halls. Br. Andrew died in November, 2008 at the age of 80—but his legacy lives on. St. Raymond is committed to strengthening the school by accepting the strongest students without regard for their ability to pay the full tuition, ensuring that a St. Raymond education remains affordable, enriching the school community by reaching out to the diverse population of New York City. You can become a member of this society through direct cash gifts, or you can make a Planned Gift to St. Raymond High School for Boys. “Clearly Br. Andrew is the rock upon which St. Raymond is built and he will always be the spirit behind its future success...let’s say a prayer for him and sing ‘in our hearts’ the school song one more time for Br. Andrew.” (Angelo DiPierro ‘77)

2010 - 2011 Annual Report 21 ALUMNINews Raven Day at Yankee Stadium

As one of our final 50th Anniversary events, 75 members of the St. Raymond High School for Boys family – alumni, students, parents, staff and supporters – visited Yankee Stadium on Saturday, June 25 for the second annual Raven Day at Yankee Stadium. The day started in the school cafeteria with breakfast and reminiscing from alumni. The group then traveled to the stadium where the weather conditions were perfect for an afternoon baseball game that resulted in a Yankees victory over the Colorado Rockies. Be sure to join us next year at Yankee Stadium as we continue this tradition. Pictured, from left to right, Peter Curtin ‘83 (with his daughter), John Corcoran ‘78 and his wife Grace Corcoran and Chris Talay ‘79.

Join us for Homecoming 2011 Last year, St. Raymond welcomed more than 100 supporters for the annual homecoming basketball game, and we hope to have an even larger turnout this year! The Homecoming basketball game will be held on Saturday, December 11 as the Ravens play Msgr. Farrell. There will be a full day of activities including lunch at 1pm and the Varsity Basketball Game at 3:30pm. We will also induct four former basketball players into our Hall of Fame. Do not miss this great day to reconnect with your former classmates, check out the new school extension and cheer on our current Ravens to victory. If you would like more information about this event, please contact Christopher Ellis at 718-824-5050 ext. 105. Remembering 9/11

On the 10th Anniversary of the events of september, 11, 2001, the St. Raymond Family fondly remembers the alumni that lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center:

Students and faculty joined in prayer during the week prior to the anniversary to remember all of those that were affected by this tragedy. The school will continue to remember and to pray for all of the individuals whose lives were lost and for those Pictured their senior year at St. Raymond are, clockwise from top left: Fred Ill, Jr. ‘69, Damian who were changed on September 11, 2001. The Magazine for St. Raymond High School for Boys 23 Br. Richard Galvin ‘82 Biked 465 Miles with Lasallian Volunteers

The Lasallian Volunteer cross country bike ride began in Astoria, Oregon on June 16 and ended in Long Branch, New Jersey for a total of over 3,000 miles. Br. Richard Galvin, FSC ’82, campus minister at St. Raymond, joined the initiative on August 8 in Pittsburgh and finished with 18 other riders in Long Branch, New Jersey on August 14. The Lasallian Volunteers, established in the summer of 1989, is a program designed by the Brothers of the Christian Schools to enrich the lives of the poor through education and volunteerism. This summer’s Pacific to Atlantic biking event raised funds and awareness to help break the cycle of poverty in America.

The Lasallian Volunteers exceeded their goal of $100,000. After much training and prayers for good weather, Br. Rich completed his journey with strong conviction and was able to far exceed his personal fundraising goals. He had hoped to raise $2 per mile, but thanks to friends, family, students, co-workers and alumni of St. Raymond, Br. Rich contributed $3,315 to the program, which is more than $7 per mile.

Br. Rich knew he was up for the challenge because he trained for months riding all over the tri-state area. “The 700 miles I rode prior to this ride was a lifesaver for me,” Br. Rich said. “Although the hills were difficult at times I expected to walk my bike up hills and need to get in the support van occasionally. Thankfully, neither was necessary. I definitely held my own and I am proud of that!” Br. Richard Galvin, FSC ‘82 on the road during the Lasallian Volunteer ride in August.

Young Alumni Reunite in Manhattan
