Match background

Two clubs that finished third in their UEFA Champions League groups during the autumn meet in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 as winners Dynamo Kyiv take on Belgian champions Club Brugge. • Dynamo beat Ferencváros 1-0 at home on Matchday 6 to claim third spot in UEFA Champions League Group G – albeit 11 points behind both Juventus and Barcelona – while Club Brugge doubled the Ukrainian side's four-point tally in Group F, although a closing draw at Lazio meant they lost out to the Italian side for second place behind section winners Borussia Dortmund. Previous meetings • The clubs met in UEFA competition for the first time in last season's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, Club Brugge going through 4-3 on aggregate. A Hans Vanaken penalty gave the Belgian side a first-leg advantage before they came from behind three times in Kyiv to draw 3-3. • Dynamo faced Belgian opponents again in this season's UEFA Champions League qualifying phase, and this time they were victorious, overcoming Gent 5-1 on aggregate in the play-offs (2-1 a, 3-0 h) with Uruguayan midfielder Carlos De Pena scoring in both legs. • Dynamo also beat Gent twice in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, but their only win in six European matches against Belgian opposition outside the qualifying phase was a 4-0 defeat of Anderlecht in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League first group stage. This is Dynamo's first springtime encounter with a team from Belgium. • Club Brugge's all-time record against Ukrainian clubs is W4 D7 L4, though only one of those wins came away from home – 2-0 at Arsenal Kyiv en route to a 7-0 aggregate success in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup second round. They have failed to score on their two visits to the country in the UEFA Europa League, drawing 0-0 with Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2009/10 group stage and losing 1-0 at Dnipro, and on aggregate, in the 2014/15 quarter-finals. Form guide Dynamo • Dynamo finished as runners-up behind Shakhtar for the fourth season running in 2019/20, although they did claim a 21st domestic cup, defeating Vorskla Poltava 8-7 on penalties in the final after a 1-1 draw. • Eliminated in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, after finishing third in their section behind Malmö and Copenhagen, Dynamo returned to the UEFA Champions League proper this term for the first time in four seasons thanks to qualifying wins against AZ Alkmaar (2-0 h) and Gent. However, two defeats each to Juventus (0-2 h, 0-3 a) and Barcelona (1-2 a, 0-4 h) left 's side contesting third place with Ferencváros, with whom they drew the first meeting 2-2 in Budapest. • The club's best UEFA Europa League performance was in 2014/15, when they reached the quarter-finals, having also been semi-finalists in the last UEFA Cup of 2008/09. This is Dynamo's seventh UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie, four of their previous six having ended in victory, including all of the last three – against Guingamp in 2014/15 (1-2 a, 3-1 h), AEK Athens in 2017/18 (1-1 a, 0-0 h) and Olympiacos in 2018/19 (2-2 a, 1-0 h). • Dynamo's home record in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 is W3 D2 L1. However, they have won just one of their last six home fixtures in springtime European competition (D2 L3), the most recent bringing a record 0-5 defeat by eventual winners Chelsea in the second leg of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 16. Club Brugge • Proclaimed Belgian champions in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign, Club Brugge qualified for an unprecedented third successive season in the UEFA Champions League group stage. • As in 2018/19 and 2019/20, the Belgian side finished third in their section, but the eight points Philippe Clement's team claimed in beating Zenit twice (2-1 a, 3-0 h) and holding Lazio to two draws (1-1 h, 2-2 a) – they also lost 3-0 twice to Dortmund – equalled the club's best ever haul in a UEFA Champions League group (2003/04). • Club Brugge are appearing in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 for the sixth time. They have won only one of their previous five ties at this stage, against Danish side Aalborg (3-1 a, 3-0 h) in 2014/15, when they went on to reach the quarter-finals. Their interest in the competition ended at this stage in 2009/10 against Valencia (1-0 h, 0-3 a), 2011/12 against Hannover (1-2 a, 0-1 h), 2018/19 against Salzburg (2-1 h, 0-4 a), and 2019/20 against Manchester United (1-1 h, 0-5 a). • The Belgian side have, therefore, been eliminated from the round of 32 on all four occasions that they lost the away leg. They are without a UEFA Europa League away win, qualifying phase included, in seven matches (D2 L5), conceding 20 goals in those games and scoring just two.
