Course Description: This course examines contemporary family issues from a sociological perspective. The class is not an exhaustive review of the field, rather, it is an in-depth look at some important issues that affect families today. We will touch upon history, politics, culture, gender, sexuality, the economy, racism, and social policy. The syllabus is subject to change based on pace of class.

To Succeed in this class, you need to: 1)Attend class 2)Engage 3)Be present for midterms & final exams.

Course Objectives: 1)To think about families sociologically, to see how social and economic forces have shaped the family 2)To think critically about family, to question the status quo and how families are represented

Dates and deadlines are important: The point structure of the course is very important. I encourage you to take all tests. I do not give INC—therefore you will be given whatever grade corresponds to your point accumulation.

Reading: You will complete the assigned readings by the day for which they are assigned. I have selected a manageable amount of reading (about 1 chapter per class meeting). If you get stuck or bored with a passage try reading it out loud or setting a timer with planned breaks. Turning off the internet and phone is helpful too.

For example you can discuss the kind of work your parents did before and after migration, how family size or parenting may have changed with migration, how marriage, or women and work, or religion may have changed.

4)If you feel uncomfortable using your name, you can just use your first name, initials or even make up a name. You just need to email me the paragraph and the photo so that I know who to give credit to.
