Fidler, which were reprinted from The Ringing World, together with an introduction by Joseph W. Parker. In preparing the text for this edition some changes to the original text have been considered desirable. The earlier work relied on the availability of the Central Council Collection of Legitimate Methods, 1907 and referred by number to methods which appeared in that publication. These references have been replaced by the actual names of the methods and all the method names have been brought up- to-date. Furthermore, whole leads of the thirty-five methods rung at Norbury have been included. In this edition we have followed the modern conventions that the first blow of the treble’s full lead is called the lead end, the last blow of the treble’s full lead is called the lead head and that the name of the method is shown next to the lead head. In the first edition inconsistent and possibly confusing notations were used. Third’s place Delight and Fourth’s place Delight are no longer considered to be separate classes and so this distinction has been removed. -

To go into detail on the various campaigns that led to the deaths would extend an article into a history of the war, and this is avoided here. Here we attempt to identify and to locate the 407 people who died, who are known to have been associated in some way with Battle and its nearby parishes: Ashburnham, Bodiam, Brede, Brightling, Catsfield, Dallington, Ewhurst, Mountfield, Netherfield, Ninfield, Penhurst, Robertsbridge and Salehurst, Sedlescombe, Westfield and Whatlington. Those who died are listed by date of death within each theatre of war. Due note should be taken of the dates of death particularly in the last ten days of March 1918, where several are notional. Home dates may be based on registration data, which means that the year in 1 question may be earlier than that given. -

THE RELIEF OF SUTTON'S POOR, PART II: Sutton and the Aston Board of Guardians of the Poor BY MIKE HINSON In a previous article, published in the Research Group's Proceedings, Vol 4: Spring 1997, the present author described the relief of Sutton's poor under the Old Poor Law, 1601—1836. The account is continued in this article which describes the relief of Sutton's poor during the early years of the New Poor Law, enacted in 1836. Widespread Distrust The 1601 Poor Law Act (43 Elizabeth I), commonly known as the Old Poor Law, relied on the parish as a unit of government and upon unpaid non—professional administrators. This resulted in the creation of a vast but rather inefficient system of social welfare, roughly adapted to the requirements of the society of the day, and based on close relationships within the village and hamlet (1). Overall, there was an absence of any consistent model of practice. This resulted in considerable geographical variation in the interpretation and implementation of the legislation. In Warwickshire, disputes within and between parishes were frequently sorted out by the Justices of the Peace at Quarter Sessions. A Commission of Enquiry established by the government carried out its work during 1832 and 1833. Having studied local systems in operation, its main proposals and recommendations were: - That there should be national uniformity in the treatment of each class of paupers, so that every applicant of any class might receive identical treatment wherever he or she might reside. - Outdoor relief to the able—bodied and their families should be abolished. -

It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

Proposal 1.1. The application is for the erection of a 712 seat spectator stand for Moseley Rugby Club with associated facilities, along with a new indoor bowls centre and replacement community changing rooms to the rear of the stand. 1.2. The stand would be centred on the halfway line at the western edge of the rugby pitch, in place of an existing 628 seat temporary stand which would be relocated. However, the applicants wish this location to be determined at a later date. The total length of the new stand would be approximately 40m, with the proposed cantilever roof rising to a maximum of 12.7m above ground level, 5.3m below the height of the previously approved 5,000 seat east stand (2009/04190/PA). At 31m deep, the stand would house home, away and officials changing facilities, weights, medical and physio rooms, and a spectator undercroft with toilets and food/ drinks counters all on the ground floor. Beyond the spectator undercroft would be a kitchen area shared with the bowls centre which would have a café, toilets and changing facilities.
