This is a busy term for all our students with a key focus being revision. Year 7-10 examinations take place the week beginning 4 June. 'How to revise' will be a key focus for assemblies in the coming weeks. One factor closely allied to exam success is phone usage and game playing. Usage is at unhealthy levels and we, as parents, need to do all we can to get balance and moderation in our young people and how they use new technologies. We would advise that: . Parents limit phone usage/game playing . Students don't have a phone in their bedrooms. There is a lot of evidence about how a phone (even switched off) in a bedroom can have a detrimental impact on sleep . Students don't use phones at mealtimes. It goes without saying that excessive phone or games usage can impact negatively on academic achievement and mental health. Psychologists are worried by research showing that Android users in the US are 'touching their phones on average 2,617 times her day. The problem is huge and concerted action is needed to get a better balance in our use of phones. Semaine de la Francophonie Winner Adi in 7G with his certificate and prize for outstanding participation in the Semaine de la Francophonie competition last half term. MedSoc This week we were joined by Professor Adam Cunningham from the University of Birmingham. A big thank you to Professor Cunningham who enthralled our students with a talk on immunology and infectious diseases. Well done too to our Sixth Formers who asked some impressive academic questions and really enjoyed the talk. Corporate Partnership Update and Golf Day Our Corporate Partnership Programme continues to grow with 36 local businesses now signed up to the intiative. The programme aims to give companies exposure across our school community of parents and alumni. There will be presentations from Deutsche Bank MD, Paul Anderson on ‘Conflict management in the workplace’, as well as MD of Bracebridge Corporate Finance and school governor Andy Moore on the topic of ‘Preparing your business for sale’. Golfers of all abilities are welcome to join us, and a few sponsorship packages are still available on the day. All of the money raised on the day is put towards improving the quality and quantity of sports provision at the school. We came to the end of a very positive and productive week to begin life at BVGS in 2019! I have been delighted to welcome students and staff back to school. Our top attenders this week have been the Upper Sixth, who are on mock examinations, with a figure of 98.4%. Best attending from lower school this week were Year 8, with an attendance of 95%. These figures are down on the statistics for the academic year (2018-19) so far: Year 7 (97.1%), Year 8 (97.0%), Year 9 (96.4%), Year 10 (95.7%), Year 11 (94.6%), L6 (96.2%), U6 (96.1%). Our target for the whole school in 2018-19 is 98%, so there is plenty of room for improvement. We all need to continue encouraging our students to live healthy and well-balanced lives in 2019. In terms of behaviour, 2028 achievement points have been awarded this week. Top performing classes were: 8W, 7B, 7R, 7G and 8P. That's 22 positive points for every negative. A good ratio to start 2019. Well done. Let's see if we can do even better next week. I have conducted a number of learning walks this week. I have been delighted to see our broad curriculum (and enrichment), building knowledge, leadership, character, independence and resilience, in action. This new term we welcome Mr Panagiotidis (Physics Department) and Mrs Harper (Biology Department).

    BELLS IN AND AROUND BIRMINGHAM: A SURVEY AND HISTORY (PART 2: LOCATIONS F-Y) Chris Pickford Version date: 29/09/2020 GAZETTEER FIRS ESTATE – see CASTLE BROMWICH, St.Wilfrid (R.C.), Firs Estate FOUR OAKS – All Saints, Walsall Road All Saints was built in 1908 to the designs of Edwin F. Reynolds, architect. Messrs. J. Barnsley and Sons were the builders. The foundation stone of the nave was laid on 4 April 1908 and the nave and temporary sanctuary were consecrated on 31 October 1908. Built in the Perpendicular style in brick, the church was intended to have a chancel, organ chamber, vestry and tower over the south porch of similar design. These were never built, but the chancel was rebuilt in a more substantial manner in the early 1960s and consecrated on 21 November 1965. The parish of Four Oaks was created from the parish of Hill in 1920. The portion of the church completed in 1908 had a stone bellcote over the chancel arch. The original bell – shown in a photograph of the church taken in 1943 – was about 20 inches in diameter and it was hung for swing chiming with a wooden stock. Having become unsafe, it was taken down in about 1965 when the chancel was added, but “went missing” shortly afterwards. There is now a loudspeaker in the bellcote. In 2000, however, a small sanctus bell was erected on outside wall on the south side of the sanctuary to mark the Millennium. It is a small bell with a diameter of 9 inches, inscribed “The Millennium Bell”.
