Lucy Leave Good afternoon. My name is Björgvin Rúnar Leifsson and this is an episode about Pink Floyd. The origins of Pink Floyd can be traced back to bassist Clive Metcalfe and vocalist Keith Noble, who formed the band Sigma 6 at The London School of Polytechnics in the winter of 1962-63 and were joined by Roger Waters on guitar, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on keyboards and vocalists Sheila Noble and Juliette Gale. They got Ken Chapman to join them as a songwriter and agent and he introduced them as The Architectural Abdabs later that winter. In his book, Inside Out, Nick Mason mentions that his first acquaintance with Roger Waters was when Waters asked to borrow his car as Mason had an Austin Seven model year 1930. Mason also says that the first time Waters and Richard Wright met was when Waters asked Wright for a cigarette, which Wright flatly denied. Mason, who is clearly a humorist, adds that this was a shining example of Wright's mythical generosity. The story actually says that Waters sat at the end of the table where Wright was working and reached for and opened a new package as he asked for the cigarette. Another example of Mason's humor is his favorite joke about the boy who tells his mother that he intends to become a drummer when he grows up and the mother promptly responds that he can not do both. Mason also says that PF arose from two groups of friends, who overlapped. On the one hand, there was a group of childhood friends from Cambridge, namely Waters, Roger (Syd) Barrett and David Gilmour and it may be added here that it was Gilmour, who taught Barrett to play the guitar. -

One afternoon, as I tried to shut out the murmur of forty fellow architectural students so that I could concentrate on the technical drawing in front of me, Roger’s long, distinctive shadow fell across my drawing board. Although he had studiously ignored my existence up until that moment, Roger had finally recognised in me a kindred musical spirit trapped within a budding architect’s body. The star-crossed paths of Virgo and Aquarius had dictated our destiny, and were compelling Roger to seek a way to unite our minds in a great creative adventure. No, no, no. I’m trying to keep the invention to a minimum. The only reason Roger had bothered to approach me was that he wanted to borrow my car. The vehicle in question was a 1930 Austin Seven ‘Chummy’ which I’d picked up for twenty quid. Most other teenagers of the time would probably have chosen to buy something more practical like a Morris 1000 Traveller, but my father had instilled a love of early cars in me, and had sourced this particular car. -

Introduction usician, psychedelic explorer, eccentric, cult icon – Roger “Syd” Barrett was many things to many people. Created in conjunction with the Barrett family and The Estate of Roger Barrett, who have provided unprece- dented access to family photographs, artworks, and mem- Mories, Barrett offers an intimate portrait of the Syd known only to his family and closest friends. Previously unseen photographs taken on seaside holidays and other family occasions show us a happy and loving young man, smiling energetically in images that map his early life, from childhood through his teenage years. Along with newly available photos from the album cover shoots for The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (taken by Storm Thorgerson and Mick Rock) they reveal the positive energy of a grinning Syd as he fools about in front of the camera. We are offered a rare glimpse of one who was immensely popular among friends and contemporaries. Also contained within these pages are recently unearthed images of Pink Floyd in which we see Syd practising handstands, making muscle-man poses, and having fun. The other members of Floyd lark about too – a fledgling young band enjoying itself with a sense of real camaraderie. The images transport one back in time to 166–67: the London Free School gigs, the launch of International Times at the Roundhouse, the UFO club, the band’s first European dates. There are photos of Syd and Floyd at numerous locations and events, giving a real sense of what it must have been like to be there as the infant light shows, experimentation, and collective spirit of the time emerged, grew, and flourished in the psychedelic hothouse that was the late 160s. -

Cluster One Good afternoon. My name is Björgvin Rúnar Leifsson and this is an episode about Pink Floyd. In 1991, Mason, Gilmour, and their agent O'Rourke participated in the Carrera Panamericana racing in Mexico. Mason finished in 6th place along with his assistant, but Gilmour and O'Rourke collided from which Gilmour escaped with a few scars but O'Rourke broke his leg. Mason says in his book that they were lucky not to kill themselves and at the same time praises Wright for not letting himself become distracted by car racing. Instead he kept sailing on his yacht in the Greek Aegean. A year later, a video was released about the race with songs by Pink Floyd under the name "La Carrera Panamericana". There were some older songs primarily from "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" but also new songs, which are found nowhere else and two of them are credited to all three of them. This is the first time Mason and Wright were credited as co-authors since "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" respectively but as the existence of "La Carrera" is not common knowledge, most people think that the first credit to Wright after "Shine on" is on "The Division Bell" and to Mason not until "The Endless River". What was remarkable about these songs was that they were largely composed in a similar way to Pink Floyd's work in the early seventies and set the tone for "The Division Bell". Instead of bringing in demoes or ready-made songs they met with some of the musicians from the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" concerts, such as Gary Wallis, Guy Pratt and Jon Carin. -

The 50-minute film (originally broadcast on the BBC) that's the main feature of this DVD, however, does an excellent job of summarizing the key aspects of his life and music. Its most important strength is its interviews with his close associates, scoring the hard-to-believe coup of first-hand talks with all four of Barrett's Pink Floyd bandmates (Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright, and David Gilmour). Making briefer but meaningful contributions are such interesting figures as Bob Klose, Pink Floyd's original guitarist; early Barrett girlfriend Libby Chisman; early Pink Floyd co-manager Peter Jenner; and Mike Leonard, who worked on the group's early lighting Available On: effects. David Gilmour The Voice and Guitar of PINK FLOYD “ON AN ISLAND” The new studio album In Stores March 7th On An Island is the third David Gilmour album and his first studio recording since Pink Floyd’s 1994 multi-platinum ‘The Division Bell’. From the first moments of the sound collage that begins ‘On An Island’, you know it’s a special experience that not only bears comparison with the best of Pink Floyd, but also confirms their lead guitarist and singer as an outstanding solo artist. Here he reveals a personal vision and a breadth of styles – folk, jazz, orchestral and rock – brought together as a unified piece by his lyrical guitar playing and instantly recognisable voice. With orchestrations by the renowned Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner and a luminous production (assisted by Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera), there is virtuosity a plenty. Crosby and Nash sing harmonies, Robert Wyatt plays the cornet, Caroline Dale the cello and Alasdair Molloy the glass harmonica. Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright guests on Hammond organ, while Gilmour sweeps and soars with his often soul-piercing guitar and vocals. Yet the album never becomes grandiose. At its heart, it remains a reflective piece, not least because of the lyrics. Although Gilmour takes some writing credits, most go to writer Polly Samson, continuing a collaborative partnership that began with The Division Bell. The songs tell of shared experiences that evoke a breadth of moods, from the hauntingly beautiful title track ‘On An Island’ (with a guitar performance set to enter the Gilmour canon of classics) to the meditative ‘The Blue’ and ‘A Pocketful of Stones’, as well as the heavier rock and blues numbers ‘Take A Breath’ and ‘This Heaven’. -

Michael Testi Published November 06, 2007 The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story is a documentary by John Edgington that explores the tumultuous story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. It is about the tragedy that befell Barrett, and the everlasting effect it had on the band, its members, and its music. Roger Keith 'Syd' Barrett was a founding member of the psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd. Barrett came up with the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" in 1965, later shortening it to the version we know. They began, like many bands of the time, doing cover songs of American R&B music, but soon created their own style of rock and roll, drawing from improvised jazz sounds. By 1967 they had a contract with EMI and produced two singles: "Arnold Layne," which hit number 20 on the British charts, and "See Emily Play," which hit number 6. From there they recorded their first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in which Barrett had a part in writing ten of the eleven songs (eight of which he wrote alone). While not a big hit in the States, it was a huge hit in Great Britain. Then Barrett's behavior became increasingly unpredictable. Some of this was attributed to his experimentation with LSD and other mind-altering drugs, but now it appears that an existing mental illness, exacerbated by drug use, may have been largely responsible. -
