NOTES FROM DAY ONE MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 2016 NOTES FROM DAY ONE August 17, 2015 SEAHAWKS RUMBLE AT THE RIDGE KICKS OFF BOEING CLASSIC WEEK Tournament Week for the 12th annual Boeing Classic teed off Monday with the annual Seahawks Rumble at the Ridge, featuring numerous local sports celebrities. Mark Rypien, WSU alum and former NFL player with the help of teammates Brett Tucker, Andrew Forrester, Ray Benefield won the scramble with a low round of 57. Jordan Babineaux and his playing partners finished second with 59; Mark Lee, and Steve Largent’s group tied at third with 60. Other notable celebrities included Mack Strong, Dave Krieg, Mike Haynes, Nesby Glasgow, Jacob Green, Slick Watts and legendary golf club designer, Roger Cleveland. All proceeds from Rumble at the Ridge benefit the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason, and Pete Carroll's "A Better Seattle”. Stan Utley, Eduardo Herrera, Gibby Gilbert III, and Gary Hallberg. PLAYERS TO WATCH The power ranking for this weekend puts Charles Schwab Cup earnings leader, Bernhard Langer at number one. Gene Sauers, Joe Durant, Paul Goydos and Scott Dunlap round out the remaining spots. Sutherland went where nobody has ever gone on the Champions Tour breaking the 60 mark on the scorecard over the weekend by firing a sizzling 13-under par round, which included 12 birdies, one eagle and one bogey. The lone bogey came on the final hole of the par-72 En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, New York. “Amazing round. Obviously I played really well. I was just in my own little world,” said Sutherland. The 50-year-old Champions Tour rookie was greeted on the 18th hole with a standing ovation and many of his fellow Champions Tour players who rushed out to the green to witness this historic moment. “The response I got when I came up 18 I have to admit gave me chills. I guess if your Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer you get used to that, but when everybody stood up around the green and was clapping, I got some chills,” said Sutherland, whose low round on the PGA TOUR coincidently came at the 2010 Canadian Open when he shot 62.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Two-Time U.S. Open Winner Retief Goosen To Make PGA TOUR Champions Debut At Oasis Championship BOCA RATON, Florida – Retief Goosen always had a sense of good timing. His ability to produce clutch shots at key moments helped him win a pair of U.S. Opens and earn induction into this year’s World Golf Hall of Fame class. Goosen also is fortunate he turns 50 on Sunday, just in time for the South African to become eligible for the PGA TOUR Champions’ first full-field event. Goosen will make his debut at next week’s Oasis Championship at The Old Course at Broken Sound. “I know I’m going to have a blast,” Goosen said. “I’ve been thinking about playing on this tour for a long time.” The Oasis Championship also received commitments from former British Open champions Darren Clarke and Tom Lehman, who won the PGA TOUR Champions’ season-opening event in Hawaii for his 12th career win on the 50-and-older circuit. Lehman won the 1996 British Open and captured the 2011 Oasis Championship at Broken Sound. Goosen has won 33 worldwide events – seven on the PGA TOUR -- and spent more than 260 weeks in the top 100 in the world rankings from 2001-07, reaching as high as No. 3 in 2006. He played in six Presidents Cup competitions for the International Team and would have won more had he not battled chronic back problems that are a thing of the past. Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.

We appreciate your continued interest in our sport, and we clearly recognize the extent to which our success is tied to the thorough and professional coverage we receive from a Owide variety of global media outlets. As the PGA TOUR begins another great season, we can truly state that the image and competitive spirit of our players has led to the healthiest state in the history of our organization. The Sports Business Journal recently reaffirmed this when it published the “2003 League Report Card,” a survey of corporate sponsors’ opinions of their investment in sports properties. The PGA TOUR ranked first in overall satisfaction among the 16 major sports. This is important as we continue to raise the exposure of our tournaments, provide significant value to our sponsors and showcase the widespread excellence of our athletes. The competition level on the PGA TOUR in 2003 was at an all-time high, with season-ending honors going down to the wire. Tiger Woods recorded a season-high five victories and the lowest stroke average on TOUR and garnered a fifth consecutive Player of the Year honor. Vijay Singh won four times and captured his first money title. Davis Love III won a career-high four times, includ- ing THE PLAYERS Championship, making 2003 the first time in 30 years where three players won four or more times in a season. However, the depth of the TOUR was never more evident. Eleven players age 40 or older combined to capture 15 PGA TOUR titles.
