Impacts of Avian Influenza outbreaks on indigenous chicken genetic resources in Thailand 3 PREFACE The preparation of this report was part of the activities for the FAO project “Future prospects for the contribution of village poultry production to food security in developing Asian economies” (GCP/RAS/228/GER) that was funded by the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GTZ)”. The production systems of small poultry producers show a significant variety from very low input systems with scavenging birds to those with improved genetic resources, supplementary feeding and animal health interventions. In many countries the exact type of poultry used in the small production systems is presently not well understood. Investigating how local birds are affected by disease outbreaks will help to understand potential specific characteristics of the genetic resources. A good understanding of the production systems of small poultry producers including their priorities and constraints is also required to design and implement appropriate control strategies for the small poultry producers. This will help to achieve cooperation and proper involvement of small farmers in disease prevention and control programmes. It will also assist Governments to make appropriate plans for designing and implementing their disease control strategies. The present report summarizes information about the chicken production systems in three regions of Thailand. It is based on field investigations with selected producers in these districts. We hope it will provide accurate and useful information to its readers and any feedback is welcome by the authors and the Animal Production Service (AGAP)1 of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Myanmar and Thailand are adjacent countries that together occupy more than the half the area of continental Tropical Asia. This geographic area is diverse ecologically, ranging from cool-temperate to tropical climates, and includes from coast, rainforests and high mountain elevations. An updated checklist of aquatic plants, which includes 78 species in 44 genera from 24 families, are presented based on floristic works. This number includes seven species, that have never been listed in the previous floras and checklists. The species (excluding non-indigenous taxa) were categorized by five geographic groups with the exception of to reflect the rich diversity of the countries' floras. Snails were collected and examined in 14 sites of Mae Lao agricultural basin from August 2016 to October 2017. A total of 1,688 snail individuals were collected and classified into 7 families, 8 genera, and 12 species. Snail diversity and habitat types were higher in rice paddies than irri- gation canals and streams. The most abundant species was Bithynia siamensis siamensis, representing 54.6% of the sample. Three species of snails act as first intermediate host were found with cercarial infections. They were Filopaludina sumatrensis polygramma, B. s. siamensis, and Melanoides tuberculata. The cercariae were categorized into 7 types; echi- nostome, monostome, gymnocephalous, virgulate, parapleurolophocercous, pleurolophocercous and megalurous cer- cariae. Parapleurolophocercous cercariae constituted the most common type of cercariae recovered, contributing 41.2% of all infections in snails. Echinostome metacercariae infections were found in 6 snail species with 7.6% prevalence. In addition, the metacercaria of avian trematode, Thapariella sp. were found in Filopaludina spp.

Paragonimus DNA was amplified from the stool sample and identified to P. heterotremus. The patient did not have any symptoms. Apparent pulmonary lesion was not found on the chest X-ray. The patient admit- ted habitual consumption of semi-cooked or roasted waterfall crabs for several years. The waterfall crabs collected from stream near the village were found negative for Paragonimus metacercariae. In northern Thailand, paragonimiasis remains as one of the public health concerns and should be ruled out for asymptomatic pulmonary patients. Occurrence of Physa acuta as hitchhikers among ornamental aquatic plants suggests that the ornamental trade was a likely introduction pathway of the species into Thailand. That a globally invasive species was able to spread unnoticed for such a long period of time highlights the need for countries like Thailand to focus research efforts on prevention and early detection of introduced species, in addition to increasing our understanding of native biodiversity.

Viljoen, Joint FAO/IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture (AGE), Vienna, Austria. Proceedings All group members recognized that EMPRES plays an essential role in improving global animal health. It therefore also contributes to sustainable animal production, rural development and improved livelihoods of the poor, food security and safe trade, and directly protecting human health through the prevention of zoonotic diseases. The group felt that EMPRES should be supported and strengthened. FAO needs to provide EMPRES with sufficient institutional resources – human and financial – and promote its role in safeguarding against TADs by engaging ministers and their representatives during Council and Conference activities of the Organization.
