INTRODUCTION The aim of this thesis is to outline how a patriarchally organized social system maintains the construction and perpetuation of one-dimensional and limited gender roles; in particular, how it maintains and perpetuates an idealized stereotypical image of a “real man” in Anglo-African literature.

Coetzee, Diary of a Bad Year (2007) In 1825, the Russian Tsar Nicholas I suppressed an uprising of 3,000 army ofcers against his assumption of the throne, following its surprising renunciation by his brother Constantine. Te members of the group in which the revolt was seeded, called simply the “Decembrists” in what is considered a defning event of the Russian intelligentsia’s formation, divided their aims across two main factions: the moderate Northerners sought a constitutional monarchy and the serfs’ liberation, while a more radical Southern contingent sought the end of the monarchy and mass redistribution of land.1 Tsar Nicholas’s response was more direct. Beset by logistical mishaps over a day-long stand- of, the Decembrists eventually faced open fre by around 9,000 tsarist troops. Many of the rebels were shot and then dumped in Saint Petersburg’s icy Neva River, and those who survived were executed, lashed, or exiled to Siberia.2 It is a story of tragic proportions, chronicled most famously in the poetry of Alexander Pushkin, the so-called Father of Russian Literature. In the background of this lofy act of rebellion, though, is a macabre fecklessness that infects Russia’s legacy no less than its nobler aspects do.

It brings together several works of literature that were published between 2004 and 2011. In so doing, it recognises that there can be no delineation of the field except in the most tenuous of senses: as Michael Chapman asserts, such “phases of chronology are ordering conveniences rather than neatly separable entities” (South African Literature 2). In attempting to take a reading of this field, I draw on discussions of the innumerable post-transitional flows and trajectories of meaning advanced by critical scholars such as Ashraf Jamal, Sarah Nuttall, Louise Bethlehem and others. ABSTRACT The goal of this dissertation is to increase our understanding of domestic policy responses to initiatives and expertise as provided by international health organizations. Although following international recommendations often improves domestic public health, in certain circumstances resistance to adopting them persists. My core theoretical argument suggests that a strong societal agreement about what constitutes the ―common good‖ served by state (e.g., ―social purpose‖) informs how domestic policy-makers evaluate the benefits of adopting international recommendations. This agreement also affects how governments frame the provision of treatment, decide which subpopulations should benefit from the consumption of public good, and choose their partners in policy implementation. To demonstrate the impact of social purpose I examine how, why and with what consequences Russia and South Africa adopted the external best case practices, guidelines, and recommendations in regard to the HIV/AIDS treatment.

Although child and youth protagonists feature prominently in many South African literary texts, the trope of childhood has yet to be systematically and extensively examined by scholars. Thus, this research attempts to address this gap by surveying a wide-ranging selection of childhood narratives using a modified version of Franco Moretti‟s concept of „distant reading‟. The objective is to map something of the field of childhood and youth in South African texts in order to open it up to various analytical possibilities, hence making a useful contribution to this growing body of research.

No, I signalled with my eyes, no, no, don’t come with your silly games now Agaat − 12 As the concept of nostalgia continues to be explored with revivalist energy, definitions become increasingly obfuscated and meaning proliferates into sometimes overwhelming forms of relativism. I make this assertion at the outset if only to state an accusation that may be leveled against this thesis in which I challenge the boundaries of nostalgia by embarking on a re- evaluation of its temporal frameworks. My aim, however, is to account for the context specific manifestations that nostalgia assumes within the South African national and literary imaginary as nostalgia contretemps. Seminal theorists such as Benedict Anderson (1986) Homi Bhaba (1990) and Slavoj Žižek (2000) have long since established how the nation, as a socio-political structure, gains discursive presence through narrative production and contestation. Indeed, this belies a complex relationship between the nation and the literary, where often the literary is – for better or worse – in service of nationalist projections. Literature however, through an awareness of narrativity, is less a purveyor of national ideology. Instead, it is a deeply reflexive mechanism that can simultaneously employ and react to discursive structures. More importantly, in its imaginative and generative capacity, literature often assumes the ethical role of creating space for the nation that is always ‘other’ to itself. In the South African context, various literary theorists express relief as they come to define ‘post-transitional’ South African literature through its very ability to step out of its ‘national 1 service’ (Frenkel and MacKenzie 2010, Medalie 2010, Jamal 2010 and Barnard 2012: 652).

Rees iii Abstract This thesis explores masculinity and sexuality, hegemonic and “deviant” in the nation state of the old apartheid South Africa, by addressing aspects of fatherhood, boyhood and motherhood in white, predominantly Afrikaans family narratives. In doing this, I explore the ways in which the young boys in texts such as The Smell of Apples (1995), by Mark Behr, and moffie (2006), by André Carl van der Merwe, are systematically groomed to become the ideal stereotype of masculinity at the time: rugged, intelligent, successful and heterosexual. The main focus of this thesis is to explore the ideologies inherent in constructing the white, Afrikaner man, his woman and their family. This will be done with specific reference to the time frame between the early 1970s to the fall of the apartheid regime in the early 1990s, focussing on the young white boys who are sent to do military training and oftentimes, a stint on the border between Angola and the then South-West Africa, in order to keep the so-called threat of communism at bay.

    Oscar Hemer: One Must Speak, One Cannot Speak ONE MUST SPEAK, ONE CANNOT SPEAK Fiction, memory and genre hybridity in transitional South Africa and Argentina Oscar Hemer, Malmö Högskola This paper is a preliminary report from a research project in progress on Fiction’s Truth, that is, fiction as a means of investigation and as a vehicle for social change, with South Africa and Argentina as my chosen cases. There are many reasons for this particular choice of examples. South Africa and Latin America (Argentina especially) are two literary worlds to which I have a long-time relationship, as a fiction writer and as a journalist. They are both extraordinarily rich in literary imagination and moreover share a common experience of dealing with a traumatic near past; in South Africa the system of racial segregation known as Apartheid and the violent last years of liberation struggle; in Latin America the military dictatorships and the ‘dirty war’ on the militant left. The latter was most systematic and cruel in Argentina, where some 12.000 people were assassinated in clandestine detention centers. A transition period is especially interesting from the perspective of literary and cultural production, since the dialectic between culture and society comes in the open – literature’s ability of looking back and looking forward simultaneously, reinterpreting the past and forecasting the future. Rewriting modernity, as David Attwell puts it, in the case of South Africa1. Or rewriting history – even writing history for the first time, exploring material that has never been narrated. I have already evoked at least two problematic concepts that require a preliminary definition.

The primary sites of analysis are the series of “epitexts” (Gérard Genette, 1997) surrounding the work of author, poet and playwright, Marlene van Niekerk. These epitexts take the form of popular and critical reviews of her work, interviews with and opinion pieces or essays by the author, as well as scholarly research that has been published on her work (including academic articles and essays, book chapters, and theses and dissertations).

The explicit focus of the thesis is on the sexual violence enacted by white men on white children and the relation between this form of violence and the practices of white racism.     CHAPTER FOUR ‘It was my … hanslam’: Agaat as a pastoral evocation of guilt and (possibly) forgiveness. And last, the rending pain of re-enactment of all that you have done or been; the shame of motives late revealed, and the awareness of things ill done and done to others’ harm which once you took for exercise of virtue. (T S Eliot, Little Gidding) The exceptionally fine translation of Marlene van Niekerk’s Agaat (2004; English translation 2006) by Michiel Heyns54 has made this plaasroman accessible to readers worldwide. The story of a rich white woman who adopts a coloured child, only to relegate her to servanthood when her own child is to be born, has been read by some as an analogy of colonialism. Though the novel resists reductionist readings, the relationship between the two protagonists, Milla de Wet and Agaat Laurier, does reflect elements of South African history. Forty years later, as power relations shift in the country, relations between the women are also reversed, and the coloured servant’s ascendancy is inversely proportionate to her mistress’s loss of control – which eventually takes the form of complete paralysis from motor neuron disease. On Milla’s death the farm will go to Agaat, her spurned foster child. While nursing her erstwhile mistress, Agaat reads from Milla’s earlier diaries to confront her with the damage she has done and the denial of her true motives. Milla dies in 1996, two years after the advent of democracy, on the Day of Reconciliation (16 December), but whether the two women are reconciled, whether Agaat can forgive the irreparable harm done to her, remains uncertain.
