Sarah Nuttall’s notion of “entanglement” (2009) is utilised as an analytical metaphor within a combined framework that draws on the polysystems theory of Itamar Even- Zohar (1990) and the concept of the cultural field of Pierre Bourdieu (1993). The primary sites of analysis are the series of “epitexts” (Gérard Genette, 1997) surrounding the work of author, poet and playwright, Marlene van Niekerk. These epitexts take the form of popular and critical reviews of her work, interviews with and opinion pieces or essays by the author, as well as scholarly research that has been published on her work (including academic articles and essays, book chapters, and theses and dissertations). Van Niekerk made her literary debut in 1977, and her most recent work was published in 2019. As such, her literary work spans a period of remarkable political, social and cultural change, includes three literary genres, and stretches across the literary systems of both Afrikaans and English. This offers an epitextual archive that is well suited, in scope and depth, to a comparative systemic approach. Following an overview of the theory employed, the positions of Van Niekerk in the respective Afrikaans literary system and the South African English literary system are discussed. Within this frame, the author is considered as both an author writing in Afrikaans and an author translated into English, with a concomitant focus on her related position in the larger system of a “national” South African literature, in addition to the circulation of her work in the bigger, transnational Anglo-American literary system and the system of world literature. The predominant discourses within the popular and scholarly reception of Van Niekerk’s work – and how these have influence her positioning in the different literary systems – are charted and interrogated, after which they are compared and discussed in order to understand the reciprocal influences, overlaps and imbrications – i.e. entanglements – that can be observed between the literary systems in question. Utilising Van Niekerk’s oeuvre as analytical lens, this study observes the nature of the interconnectedness between two of South Africa’s literary systems, and what this means for understanding the country’s dynamic literary landscape as it developed into and exists in the present. Hierdie epitekste sluit in kritiese resensies en resensies uit die hoofstroompers, onderhoude met en meningstukke of essays deur die outeur, asook navorsing oor haar werk (insluitende akademiese artikels en essays, hoofstukke uit boeke, en proefskrifte en verhandelinge). Van Niekerk debuteer in 1977 met haar eerste literêre werk en haar mees onlangse teks verskyn in 2019. As sodanig strek die omvang van haar literêre werk oor ’n tydperk van merkwaardige politieke, sosiale en kulturele verandering, terwyl dit ook drie literêre genres omvat en deel uitmaak van die literêre sisteme van sowel Afrikaans as Engels. Dit bied dus ’n omvattende en diepgaande epiteksargief wat besonder geskik is vir ’n vergelykende sistemiese benadering. ’n Oorsig van tersaaklike teorie word gevolg deur ’n bespreking van Van Niekerk binne die onderskeidelike Afrikaanstalige en Engelstalige literêre sisteme. Binne hierdie opset word die outeur beskou as sowel outeur wat skryf in Afrikaans as outeur wat in Engels vertaal is, terwyl daar ook gekonsentreer word op haar verwante stand in die groter sisteem van ’n “nasionale” Suid-Afrikaanse literatuur, benewens die omloop van haar werk in die uitgebreide, transnasionale Anglo-Amerikaanse literêre sisteem en die sisteem van wêreldletterkunde. Die oorheersende diskoerse binne die bestek van die populêre en die wetenskaplike resepsie van Van Niekerk se werk – en die wyses waarop dit haar stand in die verskillende literêre sisteme beïnvloed – word gekarteer en oorweeg, waarna hulle vergelyk en bespreek word ten einde ’n beter begrip te vorm van die invloede, oorslae en oorvleuelende patrone – m.a.w. die verstrengelinge – tussen die betrokke literêre sisteme. Deur gebruik te maak van Van Niekerk se oeuvre as analitiese lens neem hierdie studie die onderlinge verbindings tussen twee van Suid-Afrika se literêre sisteme waar, en word daar tot gevolgtrekkings gekom betreffende die betekenis hiervan in verhouding tot die land se dinamiese literêre landskap soos dit ontwikkel het en tans daar uitsien. Beset by logistical mishaps over a day-long stand- of, the Decembrists eventually faced open fre by around 9,000 tsarist troops. Many of the rebels were shot and then dumped in Saint Petersburg’s icy Neva River, and those who survived were executed, lashed, or exiled to Siberia.2 It is a story of tragic proportions, chronicled most famously in the poetry of Alexander Pushkin, the so-called Father of Russian Literature. In the background of this lofy act of rebellion, though, is a macabre fecklessness that infects Russia’s legacy no less than its nobler aspects do.

Marlene van Niekerk Time: 13 to 14h, 23 September 2016 Locatie: VOC Zaal, Bushuis, University of Amsterdam (map) The question here is whether and how certain forms of augmented, patterned and foregrounded language known as “poetry” matter in times of extreme crisis. The crisis of the Anthropocene involves a paradigm shift of the notion of the “human” itself and also the relationship of the “human” to “Nature”. Since 1950 humans have become a marked geophysical force that has changed earth systems to such a degree that several planetary boundaries are already seriously violated. In her response (climate warming, biodiversity loss, acidification of the seas, the disturbance of the nitrogen/phosphate cycles), the earth, now understood as a secular Gaia, has revealed herself as a finely tuned reactive entity – not only wholly materially transcendent but also utterly indifferent to us. We now relate to her, not necessarily as exceptional human beings but as one type of earthbound critter amongst others that need to survive in the severely damaged and increasingly dangerous conditions of our own making, the ravenous excesses of the Capitalocene. As poets we have to find radical and critical alternatives to our Beautiful Soul habits of aesthetic distancing from/objectification of and immersion in “Nature”. We have to face Gaia with a new respons-ability. What kind of ethos, modes and voices, what kinds of political interventions, can one try to map for the earthbound poet? And who cares? Marlene van Niekerk is one of South Africa’s most influential and thought provoking writers.

ABSTRACT The goal of this dissertation is to increase our understanding of domestic policy responses to initiatives and expertise as provided by international health organizations. Although following international recommendations often improves domestic public health, in certain circumstances resistance to adopting them persists. My core theoretical argument suggests that a strong societal agreement about what constitutes the ―common good‖ served by state (e.g., ―social purpose‖) informs how domestic policy-makers evaluate the benefits of adopting international recommendations. This agreement also affects how governments frame the provision of treatment, decide which subpopulations should benefit from the consumption of public good, and choose their partners in policy implementation. To demonstrate the impact of social purpose I examine how, why and with what consequences Russia and South Africa adopted the external best case practices, guidelines, and recommendations in regard to the HIV/AIDS treatment.

No, I signalled with my eyes, no, no, don’t come with your silly games now Agaat − 12 As the concept of nostalgia continues to be explored with revivalist energy, definitions become increasingly obfuscated and meaning proliferates into sometimes overwhelming forms of relativism. I make this assertion at the outset if only to state an accusation that may be leveled against this thesis in which I challenge the boundaries of nostalgia by embarking on a re- evaluation of its temporal frameworks. My aim, however, is to account for the context specific manifestations that nostalgia assumes within the South African national and literary imaginary as nostalgia contretemps. Seminal theorists such as Benedict Anderson (1986) Homi Bhaba (1990) and Slavoj Žižek (2000) have long since established how the nation, as a socio-political structure, gains discursive presence through narrative production and contestation. Indeed, this belies a complex relationship between the nation and the literary, where often the literary is – for better or worse – in service of nationalist projections. Literature however, through an awareness of narrativity, is less a purveyor of national ideology. Instead, it is a deeply reflexive mechanism that can simultaneously employ and react to discursive structures. More importantly, in its imaginative and generative capacity, literature often assumes the ethical role of creating space for the nation that is always ‘other’ to itself. In the South African context, various literary theorists express relief as they come to define ‘post-transitional’ South African literature through its very ability to step out of its ‘national 1 service’ (Frenkel and MacKenzie 2010, Medalie 2010, Jamal 2010 and Barnard 2012: 652).
