HAPPY NEW YEAR MSCA President’s Letter

by Tony Barranco, Ryan Companies US, Inc.

In the last decade of retail, the only constant in our industry has been change. Today, a number of dynamic themes are reshaping Minnesota’s retail landscape. New entrants are creating a huge shift in our grocery marketplace. Urban residential growth is leading to infill redevelopment opportunities. Retail operators are coping with changes to the state minimum wage and how the Affordable Care Act impacts their business. And capital markets partners are trying to navigate demand that is outpacing supply while trying to manage future changes in interest rates. In this era of rapid evolution, there has never been a better time to take advantage opportunities that present themselves in the reshaping of our industry. Those that are most in tune with where the market is going, and who have put themselves in a position to understand trends, to collaborate, and innovate, will shape the way customers shop in Minnesota for years to come. To stay engaged, your membership in the MSCA has never been more important.

The further I progress in my career, the more I realize that my most important asset is the depth and quality of my relationships. For retail specialists in Minnesota, MSCA membership is a critical tool to form and maintain key relationships. I’m hopeful that connections forged in the MSCA will help members stay informed, share best practices, and ultimately drive innovation in our retail landscape.

Making connections with others in the MSCA is the best way to grow your business and strengthen the organization. Here are a few of the many ways that you can make the most of your membership:

Join a committee. The sharing of member experiences and expertise is not only a valuable asset for the organization, it is also a great way to form relationships. With the speed of business and the demands on our time, committees allow you to keep pace with what is happening in the industry while networking with other MSCA members. Please contact me or the MSCA office and we’d be happy to help find a committee that fits your time and talent.

Participate in legislative activities. One of the most important functions of MSCA is sharing industry concerns with local and state legislators. Join us for Business Day at the Capitol, contribute to our lobbying efforts, or attend a legislative coffee in your district. It is critical that our member voices are heard.

Network. MSCA offers a number of ways to interact with other members. Join us at the next MSCA program, at a community outreach event, at the golf outing, or bowling event. Mentor new members and reconnect with friends. Remember that your relationships are your biggest asset!

I am privileged to serve the MSCA membership as President in 2015. I am excited to undertake the challenge of working with our membership and leadership to keep our organization a relevant and valuable part of your professional life. In partnership with Executive Director Karla Keller Torp, and Associate Director Ryan Hericks, I am honored to lead a dedicated and talented Executive Team, Board of Directors, and Committee Co-Chair Group. MSCA members, you are in good hands.

Have a healthy and productive 2015!
