In den letzten Jahren entwickelte sich Murten Classics zu einem weit über die Region hinaus bekannten Musikfestival, das während dreier Wochen die Mauern der mittelalter- lichen Stadt zum Klingen bringt. Ein vielseitiges Programm, das Kenner der klassischen Musik und Liebhaber in gleichem Masse anspricht, begeistert jedes Jahr die zahlreichen Besucherinnen und Besucher. Als roter Faden zieht sich jeweils ein Thema durch das ganze Festival. Weltweit etablierte Solistinnen und Solisten treffen sich in Murten mit den Stars von morgen. Kern des Festivals sind die Konzerte im Schlosshof von Murten, der einen einmaligen Blick auf den Murten- see und den Sonnenuntergang bietet. Bei schlech- ter Witterung werden die Schlosshof-Konzerte in der Deutschen Kirche abgehalten. Barockmusik ist in der Schlosskirche Münchenwiler zu hören. Die weiteren Konzerte, die in der Französischen Kirche Murten, in der Reformierten Kirche Meyriez, im romantischen Park des Hotels Vieux Manoir oder auf der Bühne des Beaulieu (KiB) ihren adäquaten Austragungsort finden, zeigen die künstlerische Idee und das Thema des Festivals mit besonderer Gestaltungskraft auf. Der familiäre Rahmen, der nahe Kontakt mit den Musi- kerinnen und Musikern und die für eine einzigartige Atmosphäre bürgenden Konzertlokalitäten machen Murten Classics zu einer ganz besonderen Perle in der Festivallandschaft. 5 Murten Classics Le Festival exceptionnel Cela fait 23 ans que le festival d'été, Murten Classics, présente un répertoire de concerts classiques dans la pittoresque bourgade de Morat. Au fil des ans, le festival a enchanté les murs de la cité médiévale durant trois semaines. Il a désormais acquis une réputation qui dépasse de loin les frontières régionales. La variété du programme, interpellant aussi bien les spécialistes que les passionnés de musique classique, ravi chaque année de nombreux auditeurs. Un thème sert de fil rouge à ce festival qui permet la rencontre de solistes de renommée mondiale avec les stars de demain. Les concerts dans la cour du château de Morat, d'où l'on peut admirer le panorama du soleil couchant sur le lac, forment le noyau du festival. En cas d'intempéries, les concerts du château ont lieu dans l'Eglise allemande. Les chef-d'œuvres de la musique baroque résonnent dans l'Eglise du château de Villars-les-Moines. Les autres concerts qui bénéficient également de sites d'exécution propices, tels que l'Eglise française de Morat, l'Eglise réformée de Meyriez, le parc romantique de l'hôtel Vieux Manoir ou la scène du Beaulieu (KiB), permettent tout particulièrement de profiler l'idée artistique et thématique du festival. Le cadre familial, le contact de proximité avec les artistes et les sites de concert garantissent une atmosphère unique et font de Murten Classics une perle vive dans l'océan des festivals. 7 Editorial Kaspar Zehnder Liebes Publikum Murten befindet sich an der Sprachgrenze. Sie inspirierte uns zum diesjährigen Festivalmotto «Grenzen – grenzen­ los». In gegen dreissig Konzertprogrammen setzen wir Grenzen, um sie wieder zu sprengen. Wir gehen an die Grenze, um sie zu respektieren, zu erweitern oder zu überschreiten. An die Grenze gehen: Johann Sebastian Bach war an die Grenzen des kompositorisch Möglichen gegangen, als er das Königliche Thema verarbeitet und in Form eines Musikalischen Opfers Friedrich dem Grossen zurückge- bracht hatte. Die Grenze erweitern: Franz Liszt schrieb Werke, deren technischer Schwierigkeitsgrad alles Bisherige übertraf, und er hat damit den Horizont seines Instrumentes wesentlich erweitert. Über die Grenze: Zwar beendet Joseph Haydn sein Oratorium «Die Schöpfung» vor dem Sündenfall, aber dem Publikum wird im Verlauf des Werks zunehmend bewusst, dass die paradiesische Harmonie und Idylle unwiederbringlich verspielt ist. In der «Winterreise» wan- dert Franz Schubert an der Grenze zwischen dem Diesseits und dem Jenseits. Aus der Volks- in die Kunstmusik führen uns Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvorˇák, später Béla Bartók und Leoš Janácek. Sergej Prokofjew und Dmitri Schosta- kowitsch sahen ihre eigene schöpferische Freiheit und Fantasie mit der staatlichen Kontrolle konfrontiert und mussten zusehen, wie ihre Werke zensuriert, manipuliert und verstümmelt wurden. George Gershwin schliesslich war der erste moderne Crossover-Komponist. Grenzen sprengen: Maurice Ravel hat den Rahmen von Mussorgskys Klavierfassung gesprengt und die «Bilder einer Ausstellung» in ein einziges rauschendes, in allen Orchesterfarben schillerndes Klangbild verwandelt. Grenzen sind da, um abgebaut zu werden: Musik kennt keine politische, religiöse oder sprachliche Grenze. Musik ist Weltsprache. Musik verbindet, grenzenlos. Kaspar Zehnder Künstlerischer Leiter 9 Editorial Kaspar Zehnder Cher Public, Morat se trouve à la frontière des langues. Celle-ci a été l’inspiratrice de la devise du festival de cette année « Frontières – sans limite ». Dans près de trente programmes de concerts, nous avons fixé des limites pour mieux les faire exploser par la suite. Nous allons à la limite, pour la respecter, l’élargir ou pour la dépasser. Aller à la limite : Johann Sébastian Bach est allé jusqu’à la limite du possible dans sa composition lorsqu’il a élaboré le thème royal qu’il a remis sous forme d’une offrande musicale à Frédéric le Grand. Elargir les frontières : Franz Liszt a écrit des œuvres dont le degré de difficulté technique dépassait tout ce qui avait été fait jusque-là et a ainsi beaucoup élargi l’horizon de son instrument. Au­delà des frontières : Bien que Joseph Haydn termine son oratoire « La création » avant le péché originel, le pu- blic prend toutefois conscience, au cours de l’exécution de l’œuvre, que l’harmonie de l’idylle paradisiaque est irré- médiablement compromise. Dans le « voyage d’hiver », Franz Schubert erre à la limite de ce monde et de l’au-delà. Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvorˇák, plus tard Béla Bartók et Leoš Janácek nous conduisent de la musique folklorique à la musique classique. Sergej Prokofjew et Dmitri Schos- takowitsch ont vu leur liberté créative et leur fantaisie confrontées aux contrôles de l’Etat et ont dû supporter que leurs oeuvres soient censurées, manipulées et mutilées. Georges Gershwin, finalement, a été le premier compositeur moderne « crossover ». Dépasser les frontières: Maurice Ravel a fait éclater le cadre de la version pour piano de Moussorgsky et a transformé les « Tableaux d’une exposition » en une sonorité féerique et unique faisant chatoyer toutes les couleurs orchestrales. Les frontières sont là pour être dépassées. La musique ne connaît pas de limites politiques, religieuses ou de fron- tières linguistiques. La musique exprime une langue uni- ver selle. We in the cello section were told to play the opening with as much stillness as possible, allowing the first theme to grow as it weaves into violins and violas, into threads of flute and oboe, and — from there — into a tempestuous section of interweaving themes. The argument descends into a woodwind quarrel, resolved by flute and oboe, decorated by horns — while the strings continue to niggle and churn away at any sense of calm. 'Then solo bassoon ignites a new, still tenser, section. The violins take over, lightly but resolutely, answered by middle strings conveying a sense of tenderness — but with a bitter aftertaste. (This is incidentally one of Sawyers' most characteristic strengths: a tenderness, never saccharine, often undermined by subtle discontent.) From the brass comes the first glimpse of escape: the powerful broken octave theme over which the other themes furiously contend. 'The cellos at the recapitulation, now deepened and enriched, are twisted by Sawyers into something passionate and grounded in lower brass, reinforced by timpani. The movement ends with the heavy brass seemingly triumphant over the strings' stubborn reiteration of the theme. Still, the lower strings' pessimism prevails. 'Tutti violins kick-start the second movement with a dramatic leap from their richest register, only yielding to keening solo oboe. 'The sobered strings leave the solo winds to mourn, yet, with characteristic Sawyers intensity, something is brewing at subterranean depths: eventually, the violas' chuntering is answered by full insistent brass, in a stormily ecstatic tantrum.

    DAVID FRÜHWIRTH Austrian violinist David Frühwirth is well on his way to establishing a firm place in the international music scene. Maestro Valery Gergiev invited the young Soloist to perform with Mariinsky Orchestra in St Petersburg. He performed Mozart concerto Nr. 3 and a new violin concerto from Olga Pochikhina, dedicated to the Soloist. He also played already a very successful Debut recital at the Salzburg Festival. From his several CD recordings his Debut CD Set „Trails of Creativity“received „Editors Choice“in Gramophone Magazine and Fono Forum. In 2011 David Frühwirth is again invited to perform on international concert stages like: Musikverein Vienna, Wigmore Hall London, Grosser Saal Mozarteum Salzburg, Historical Museum Moskau, Prinzregenten - Theater Munich. And he will play chamber music with distinguished Artists from his generation like Herbert Schuch, Claudio Bohorquez, Florian Krumpöck, Adrian Brendel, Gottlieb Wallisch, Wen-Sinn Yang and Milana Chernyavska. 2010 he played his Debut in China with CNSO (Conductor Gabriel Feltz), concerts in Spain (Toledo Music Festival), Hungary, England, Germany, Austria and a tour in Mexico; also frequently chamber music concerts at different Festivals. The Violinist made also two new CD recordings: the violin concerto by E. Wellesz together with the RSO Berlin (Conductor Roger Epple) for Capriccio and a Duo CD with Florian Uhlig at the piano for EDA-Berlin. David Frühwirth is prize-winner in a number of national and international competitions and his performances have brought him highly critical acclaim. This led to concerts at the big Concert halls; Lincoln Centre New York, Konzerthaus Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg and Wigmore Hall (London).

These values are inspired by the life and career of Clara Haskil, a Swiss pianist born in Bucharest, Romania in 1895 and who died in Brussels in 1960. The programme reflects Clara Haskil’s vast repertoire through a recital, a chamber music performance and a concerto with orchestra.

    BOTOND SZÖCS Pianist „How wonderful does the young pianist Botond Szöcs play ... He’s a second Richter ... I would not even know where to start ... with the care to correctly render each musical phrase, with his sound full, round, with his incredible versatility in interpretation! All these were found in the Sunday evening recital, and were represented brilliantly by the young pianist. But overall, I would notice an extraordinary sensitivity and an equal energy to match it” said the music critic Petra Gherasim after attended the recital performed at the Romanian Athenaeum in March 2013. The 23 year old pianist Botond Szöcs got noticed in the music world thanks to his unmistakable energetic temperament boosted by intense artistic feelings and expressed by a persuasive power of interpretation. Student at the Faculty of Music - Transilvania University of Braşov, under the guidance of professor Stela Drăgulin, a great name of Romanian and worldwide piano school, Botond has participated at numerous national and international competitions winning ten first prizes, including First Prize and the Festival’s Trophy at the National Contest Victor Giuleanu (2012) and Remember Enescu Prize, awarded by George Enescu Foundation. These prizes were followed in 2017 by The Jury’s Special and Excellence Prizes at the Art Estival Brasov Contest – 7th Edition, as well as the American - Romanian Academy for Arts and Sciences Music Award for Excellence -The Best Concert Performer as a Soloist, Member of a Chamber Music Ensemble and Accompanist. Botond Szöcs started as a soloist when he was just 17 years old, playing Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F Major, KV 459 with Philharmonic Orchestra of Sibiu.
