The Oxford Architectural and Historical Society and the Oxford Movement By S. L. OLLARD (Read before the Society, 31 May, 1939) y the Oxford Movement I understand the religious revival which began B with John Keble's sermon on National Apostasy preached in St. Mary's on 14 July, 1833. The strictly Oxford stage of that Movement, its first chapter, ended in 1845 with the degradation of W. G. Ward in February and the secession to Rome of Mr. Newman and his friends at Littlemore in the following October. I am not very much concerned in this paper with the story after that date, though I have pursued it in the printed reports and other sources up to 1852. The Oxford Movement was at base a moral movement. The effect of 18th century speculation and of the French Revolution had been to force men's minds back to first principles. Reform had begun. In England it had shaken the foundations of the existing parliamentary system, and the Church itself seemed in danger of being reformed away. Some of its supposed safeguards, e.g., the penal laws against Nonconformists and Roman Catholics, had been removed, yet abuses, pluralism and non-residence for instance, remained ob vious weaknesses. Meanwhile, most of its official defenders were not armed with particularly spiritual weapons. The men of the Oxford Movement were con vinced of a great truth, namely that the English Church was a living part of the one Holy Catholic Church: that it was no state-created body, but part of the Society founded by the Lord Himself with supernatural powers and super natural claims. -

ABSTRACT in the Early Nineteenth Century, the Church
ABSTRACT In the early nineteenth century, the Church of England faced a crisis of self- understanding as a result of political and social changes occurring in Britain. The church was forced to determine what it meant to be the established church of the nation in light of these new circumstances. In the 1830s, a revival took place within the Church of England which prompted a renewal of the theology and practice of the church, including the Eucharist. This revival, known as the Oxford Movement, breathed new life into the High Church party. A heightened emphasis was placed on the sacramental life and on the Eucharist as the focus of worship. Adherents of the Oxford Movement developed a Eucharistic theology which promoted a closer connection between the elements and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist than did the earlier Anglican tradition. One of the exponents of this Eucharistic theology was Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802- 1857). The second son of anti-slavery crusader William Wilberforce, Robert was raised in a family of prominent Anglican Evangelicals. At the University of Oxford he came under the influence of his tutor, John Keble, who was one of the four leaders of the Oxford Movement during its heyday. The Gorham case, whose focus was ostensibly the question of baptismal regeneration, turned into a debate on the state’s control over the established church. CORPORATE REUNION: A NINETEENTH- CENTURY DILEMMA VINCENT ALAN McCLELLAND University of Hull EFORE THE ADVENT of the Oxford Movement in 1833 and before the B young converts George Spencer and Ambrose Phillipps had, shortly before his death, enlisted the powerful support and encouragement of the aristocratic Louis de Quelin, Archbishop of Paris,1 in the establishment in 1838 of an Association of Prayers for the Conversion of England, the matter of the reunion of a divided Christendom had greatly engaged the attention of Anglican divines. Indeed, as Brandreth in his study of the ecumenical ideals of the Oxford Movement has pointed out, "there is scarcely a generation [in the history of the Church of England] from the time of the Reformation to our own day which has not caught, whether perfectly or imperfectly, the vision of a united Christendom."2 The most learned of Jacobean divines, Lancelot Andrewes, Bishop of Winchester under James I, regularly interceded "for the Universal Church, its confir mation and growth; for the Western Church, its restoration and pacifi cation; for the Church of Great Britain, the setting in order of the things that are wanting in it and the strengthening of the things that remain".3 In the anxiety to locate the needs of the national church within the context of the Church Universal, Andrewes was followed by a host of Carolingian divines and Settlement nonjurors, themselves the harbingers of that Anglo-Catholic spirit which gave life, albeit by means of a prolonged and painful Caesarian section, to the vibrant Tractarian quest for ecclesial justification. -

Act of Union creates a “United Kingdom” of Britain and Ireland (conceded to by Irish Protestants, as only protection against Catholic hordes) (later to be called “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”) (see 1707, Act of Union). But “Britain” continues to be thought of, as consisting of England, Wales, Scotland. Union with Ireland made “the Parliament at Westminster … directly responsible for Irish affairs”, thus “Either the establishment of the Church of England must be modified, or the union must be ended and home rule given to Ireland,” a problem that eventuated in 1828 emancipation (Pitt initially promised Catholic emancipation but reneged). (Chadwick, Victorian Church). King George refuses emancipation of Catholics, to keep them out of Parliament, and so Pitt resigns temporarily. Abortive romanticized Dublin uprising of Robert Emmet (Protestant) in 1803. Great majority of Catholics now tenants, but a new Catholic middle class emerging, Cathlics admitted to Trinity. **1801** Concordat with the Pope by Napoleon, prototype of future concordats. -
Newman's Disputed Honesty a Case Study in Victorian Religious
Louvain Studies 34 (2009-2010) 361-384 doi: 10.2143/LS.34.4.2122223 © 2010 by Louvain Studies, all rights reserved Newman’s Disputed Honesty A Case Study in Victorian Religious Controversy Geertjan Zuijdwegt Abstract. — An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, Newman’s rationale for his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1845, provoked a series of responses in the Victorian periodical press that all involved an assessment of New- man’s sincerity in religious affairs. This article presents a detailed analysis of the various verdicts on Newman’s honesty, delineating three types of responses neatly divided along ecclesial party lines. (1) Tractarians subtly discredit Newman’s sincer- ity while an Anglican, in order to shift the blame for Newman’s defection from the Oxford Movement at large to his own religious mindset. (2) Other Anglicans are fiercer in their assessments. Spearheaded by Evangelicals, they vigorously challenge Newman’s integrity as an Anglican to safeguard the essentially Protestant character of the Church of England. (3) Nonconformists, on the other hand, unanimously exculpate Newman from insincerity and use his honest conversion as an argument against the Protestant nature of the established Church. The use of anti-Catholic Gothic literary tropes in the texts under discussion reinforces this threefold division. Tractarians and Nonconformists abstain from using such Gothic rhetorical ploys, while other Anglicans fully engage this type of anti-Catholic polemics. I. Introduction “What I feel most at present as to the attacks made on me, or rather the only thing which I feel, is the charge of dishonesty. Really no one but O’Connell is called so distinctly and so ordinary a liar, as I am.”1 The lament is John Henry Newman’s, and even though it stems from 1844, it could have been written with justice anytime between his pub- lication of Tract 90 in 1841 and Charles Kingsley’s assault on his hon- esty in1864. -

First of all, it is necessary to look into the background of each by studying the century to which it belongs. Most !Dclicans were suffering from the deism of the preceding century which had created a mechanical universe for en absentee God and an all-pel"V'ading deadness in spiritual things.
