I started back in the stone ages as a one-man gang, mainly doing shows and eventually advertising in The Trader Speaks, Sports Collectors Digest, then later in Baseball Hobby News, The Sporting News, USA Weekly, The Advertiser and more. I was joined by Scott Cowan when he was a mere child of 15 (he’s now 51), then within a short time by Rob Rosen, Bob Ivanjack & Nacho Arredondo. These 4 stalwarts have been my partners for a combined 110 years (average 27 years each). I’ve noted before that we started before there were official price guides and long before words like “faxing”, “emailing” and “Googling” were part of our world. It’s hard to believe but we opened our doors before Microsoft, Home Depot & Costco even existed. It’s been a great ride so far. Some of our clients have dealt with us for 20-30 years, some longer. It’s still a kick to go to a big card show and have people stop by to say they ordered their first card from us. They usually say they ordered with they were 9-12.     Approximate boundaries: N-W. Grange Ave;S -W. Ramsey Ave; E-I-94, W-S. 27th St FAR SOUTH SIDECopernicus Park NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION Copernicus Park is a moderate-density neighborhood. Home architectural styles are mainly 1950s/ 1960s ranch houses and Cape Cods, with a scattering of Tudor style homes. The neighborhood topography is hilly with a few steep hills. Most of the streets follow a grid pattern, except for few winding thoroughfares such as South 22nd and Klein Avenue that curve around the southern border of Copernicus Park. The business district is along South 27th Street--one of the major commercial corridors in the city. The street teems with fast food restaurants, strip malls, and car dealerships. The main green space is Copernicus Park, a 20-acre commons with a basketball court, tot lot, wooded area with a hiking trail, and a stream that runs through the park. See neighborhood photos below. HISTORY Copernicus Park is one far south side neighborhood among many that makes up today’s Garden District. The boundaries of the Garden District are those of the 13th Aldermanic District. All Garden District neighborhoods were once part of the Town of Lake, with boundaries of Lake Michigan to South 27th Street and Greenfield to College Avenues. By the mid-1950s, the City of Milwaukee had annexed the areas that today encompasses the Garden District. Early populations Many of the far south side neighborhoods that comprise today’s Todays neighborhood- Garden District owe a debt to the dreams of a local Norwegian Houses on 20th & Grange named John Saveland.

Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

    ARTI FACT LONG GONE REMINDER IN THE REVERED TRADITION OF NEIGHBORHOOD BALLPARKS, PITTSBURGH’S FORBES FIELD WAS ONE OF THE GREATS. Built in 1909, it was among the first made of concrete and steel, signaling the end of the old wooden stadiums. In a city known for its work ethic, Forbes Field bespoke a serious approach to leisure. The exterior was elaborate, the outfield vast. A review of the time stated, “For architectural beauty, imposing size, solid construction, and public comfort and convenience, it has not its superior in the world.” THE STADIUM WAS HOME TO THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES FROM 1909 TO 1970. In the sum- mer of 1921, it was the site of the first radio broadcast of a major league game. It was here that Babe Ruth hit his final home run. In later decades, a new generation of fans thrilled to the heroics of Roberto Clemente and his mates; Forbes was the scene of one of the game’s immortal moments, when the Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski hit a home run to win the thrilling 1960 World Series in game seven against the hated Yankees. The University of Pittsburgh’s towering Cathedral of Learning served as an observation deck for fans on the outside (pictured). AT THE DAWN OF THE 1970S, SEISMIC CHANGES IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY WERE UNDERWAY, and Pittsburgh faced an uncertain future. Almost as a ritual goodbye to the past, Forbes Field was demolished, replaced with a high tech arena with Astroturf at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. Three Rivers Stadium was part of the multi-purpose megastadium wave of the 1970s.

    Harry Kalven: Scholar and Friend Charles 0. Gregoryt As I write this tribute to Harry Kalven, my mind is a kaleido- scope of intimate memories from the years we spent together on the Torts casebook. Of course I also recall Harry in my 1935-36 Torts class, but only faintly, as having been one of the first students in the Great Books course given by Hutchins and Adler. Years later something came up about our professor/student relationship a gen- eration or so earlier, and Harry said, "Don't worry, Charlie, you gave me an A in Torts." I couldn't remember; but you can imagine my relief. After the war, in 1945, Harry became a member of the Law School faculty; we were colleagues until I left in 1949 to teach at the University of Virginia Law School. It was then that Harry took over the course in Torts at Chicago. About two years later we began to plan our casebook in Torts. Collaborating on a sizeable law book, we naturally came to know each other extremely well, even though most of the time we were almost a thousand miles apart. We would arrange our schedules so that periodically I would spend two weeks in Chicago and Harry would be with me for two weeks in Charlottes- ville, staying in each other's homes. Harry had many ideas for revolutionizing the course in Torts. While the approach we adopted was inspired to some extent by the older book of Shulman and James, through our casebook Harry has had a tremendous influence on legal writing, teaching, and develop- ments in the law.

    KIT YOUNG’S SALE #91 1952 ROYAL STARS OF BASEBALL DESSERT PREMIUMS These very scarce 5” x 7” black & white cards were issued as a premium by Royal Desserts in 1952. Each card includes the inscription “To a Royal Fan” along with the player’s facsimile autograph. These are rarely offered and in pretty nice shape.     Pastor visits 25 ballparks on journey of a lifetime Baseball is the background music to pastor Jeff Lingle's life Step inside the office of Epiphany Lutheran Church pastor Jeff Lingle, and your eyes are immediately drawn to it. Resting near a shrine of memorabilia commemorating his beloved New York Yankees sits a massive poster with the words "Soulful Play" emblazoned in crimson red on its front. On the poster, crafted by church member James Brooks, a U.S. map with a smattering of bullet points details the four-month, 25-ballpark journey that Lingle embarked upon this past summer. For Lingle, it was a life-affirming odyssey that reinvigorated his dedication to his church and the game he loves so much. "The trip wasn't just fun for me, it helped me to understand who I am as a person and as a pastor," Lingle said. "It connected me to my childhood, and how vital baseball was to me then and now, especially as a man of faith." After nearly 21 years with no sabbatical, Lingle needed a break. That's when the Lilly Endowment emerged from the dugout. As part of the National Clergy Renewal Program, the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis awards up to 150 grants annually, each worth up to $50,000, to Christian congregations so their pastor of choice can take a respite from church duties. Lingle applied for the grant in 2003 and was denied. But the opportunity presented itself again in 2009, this time with a subject matter that allowed Lingle to muse about his lifelong passion.
