4 In Catch and Release, the four percussionists patch together an array of diverse sonic objects to form a wonky, 8-handed “machine” that gets snagged in a “glitch” as it jitters along. Through various means of brushing, squeaking, and scraping, the machine begins to align with itself in increasingly persistent attempts to overcome the glitch—causing it to loop, flare up, reset, and even completely overload. —JZ

Performance Notes Setup The performers should be set up in a semicircle, with first percussionist stage right and fourth stage left. The grand piano is to be set up between first and second percussionists, so that the first percussionist can access the keys, pedals, and tuning knobs, and second can access the strings. Noteheads Noteheads are used as a guide to the quality of sound being produced. Regular noteheads denote a striking sound, x noteheads indicate a brushing, scratching, or scraping sound, and square noteheads represent a friction or bowed sound. Struck sounds (except for mm. 179) should always be performed dead stroke.

Preparation Use of a lidless piano is strongly advised. Wooden blocks should be placed flat to cover the entire highest and lowest sections of the piano strings to create a percussive, mostly non-pitched sound when keys are depressed, and to prevent ring when strings are played. A wooden block should also cover the two pitches used on the xylophone bars (G natural, A natural).

For the 1st percussionist: The piano key “guiro” entails the percussionist running their fingernails along the tops of the white keys, or the beater shaft along the sides of the white keys, in a glissando motion. The location and length of the glissando is denoted by a bracketed treble/bass clef and x-noteheads. The piano tuning knob technique involves running one’s fingernails in a glissando motion down through the tuning knobs.

For the 2nd and 3rd percussionists: Up and down arrows beside an x-notehead indicates direction in which to scrape (cymbal or guiro).

For the 4th percussionist: The xylophone resonator “guiro” entails the percussionist running their fingernails or beater shaft along the xylophone resonators of the white bars in a glissando motion.
