Ogdensburg School Visual Arts Curriculum Adopted 2/23/10 Revised 5/1/12, Born on: 11/3/15, Revised 2017 , Adopted December 4, 2018 Rationale Grades K – 8 By encouraging creativity and personal expression, the Ogdensburg School District provides students in grades one to eight with a visual arts experience that facilitates personal, intellectual, social, and human growth. The Visual Arts Curriculum is structured as a discipline based art education program aligned with both the National Visual Arts Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts. Students will increase their understanding of the creative process, the history of arts and culture, performance, aesthetic awareness, and critique methodologies. The arts are deeply embedded in our lives shaping our daily experiences. The arts challenge old perspectives while connecting each new generation from those in the past. They have served as a visual means of communication which have described, defined, and deepened our experiences. An education in the arts fosters a learning community that demonstrates an understanding of the elements and principles that promote creation, the influence of the visual arts throughout history and across cultures, the technologies appropriate for creating, the study of aesthetics, and critique methodologies. The arts are a valuable tool that enhances learning st across all disciplines, augments the quality of life, and possesses technical skills essential in the 21 century. The arts serve as a visual means of communication. Through the arts, students have the ability to express feelings and ideas contributing to the healthy development of children’s minds. These unique forms of expression and communication encourage students into various ways of thinking and understanding. From this, students will develop both verbal and nonverbal abilities help develop problem solving skills such as analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating. The visual arts curriculum is designed to create student awareness and understanding in art-making, history, culture, and art analysis. Students will be able to recognize and solve artistic problems, examine works of art from structural, historical, cultural, and aesthetic perspectives, and comprehend works of art from various cultures and historical periods. Students will also gain an understanding of the value of craftsmanship, an understanding of various materials and techniques, and the responsibility of generating individual goals. Development of these essential skills will have a significant role in all other areas of life. Student Learning Targets 1.1.2.D.1 Recognize the qualities of line including straight, curved, vertical, horizontal, thick and thin lines in known two-dimensional works of art by: ● Kenneth Noland ● Martin Ramirez ● Cy Twombly Apply similar use of varied lines in original artwork. 1.1.2.D.1 Identify basic geometric shapes in two-dimensional works of art by: · Jasper Johns · Jim Dine · Robert Delaunay · Paul Klee Produce similar use of shape as the focus of original artwork. 1.1.2.D.1 Identify primary colors in two -dimensional works of art: ● Piet Mondrian’s Compositions in Red, Blue and Yellow ● DeStijl paintings by Bart Van Der Lick ● Paul Cézanne still life’s ● Roy Lichtenstein’s paintings Apply primary colors in original artwork. 1.1.2.D.1 Recognize artists’ use of pattern/texture · Judy Chicago's Pasadena Lifesavers series · Jasper John’s number series · Pueblo pottery · Greek vases Use pattern as the inspiration for original artwork. Unit Essential Questions: · What are the elements of art and principles of design? · How are the elements of art and principles of design used in specific works of art? · How does creating art differ from viewing art? Unit Enduring Understandings: · The elements of art include line, color, shape, form, value, and balance. · Specific works of art apply a variety of elements of art and principles of design. · The arts serve multiple functions when creating or viewing art. Student Learning Targets 1.3.2.D.1 Identify the elements of art including line weight, color and texture in famous, self-generated, and peer artwork. Apply these elements to the creation of original artwork. 1.3.2.D.1 Describe the difference between shape and form in basic verbal vocabulary and 1.3.2.D.3 incorporate basic shapes (e.g., circle, square, and triangle) in original pieces of art to support the narrative content. 1.3.2.D.1 Identify the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple in famous artwork and peer artwork. Apply them in original works of art and describe the use of color for expression. 1.3.2.D.1 Use modeling tools to create three-dimensional forms both in the round and 1.3.2.D.4 relief. 1.3.2.D.2 Recognize and use line and shape to create symbols. 1.3.2.D.4 Use a variety of art making materials (e.g., paint, crayons, markers etc.) and color mixing to create realistic, abstract and expressive two-dimensional works of art. Student Learning Targets 1.3.2.D.1 Use the elements of line, shape, texture, color and space to create two- 1.3.2.D.2 dimensional artwork based on personal symbols that is seen in everyday life. 1.3.2.D.1 Use the elements of shape, texture and color to create 3 dimensional artwork 1.3.2.D.4 based on observation of the physical world using a variety of media and tools 1.3.2.D.5 appropriate to the production of the works. 1.3.2.D.3 Use the various materials, tools and techniques and demonstrate their knowledge 1.3.2.D.4 by identifying the materials, tools and methods they have used Unit Essential Questions: · How does knowledge of art materials, tools, visual vocabulary, and methodologies affect symbolism and personal expression in art? · What connections exist between visual art and everyday life? Student Learning Targets 1.4.2.A.3 Describe what emotions the artwork conveys, and how the artist conveys those emotions. Create a work of art that tells a story of that emotional response. 1.4.2.A.3 Communicate personal responses to a variety of historical works of art with common subjects or themes. Responses will describe likes and dislikes through comparing and contrasting characteristics of the various art works. 1.4.2.B.1 Observe basic elements of art and principles of design, and share those observations with peers. 1.4.2.B.1 Observe a work of art and give reasons for liking or disliking artwork. Use elements of art and principles of design as evidence to support answer. Unit Essential Questions: · What process leads to an informed judgment and assessment of works of art? Unit Enduring Understandings: · The critical process of observing, describing, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating leads to informed judgments regarding the relative merits of artworks.
