The White Elephant of Panschin A Dark Past. An Uncertain Future. Under Mars’ Domed City, Four People’s Destinies Collide By Odessa Moon The Second Book in the “Steppes of Mars” series Near the Martian north pole, six linked domes form the mining city of Panschin. For generations, they have burrowed into the Martian under- world, digging tunnels, mining ore, and uncovering its secrets. At Panschin’s mining conference, Airik, the daimyo of Shelleen, hopes to find allies to exploit his family’s newly discovered Red Mercury lode. But the prospect of fabulous wealth has drawn a target on Airik’s back: for con artists and their schemes, companies hoping to scam him, and women wanting to become his wife. Overwhelmed, Airik flees with his aide, secretary and bodyguard, searching for a quiet place to work in peace. For Veronica Bradwell, her family’s disgrace after her father’s financial scan- dal and suicide forces her to open the doors of the mansion nicknamed the White Elephant to boarders. And while Airik and his “cousins” look suspicious, they are well-mannered and, most important, paid in advance. But Veronica has more serious concerns. Younger sister Shelby wants to become an artist, and her education at Panschin University. requires opening the White Elephant to a gallery showing led by Profes- sor Vitebskin, whose ideas of art clashes with Shelby’s instinct for beauty and color. As Shelby struggles, she forms an attachment with Malcolm Cobb, a young bank executive who masks his mining back- ground with a serious ambition to rise in Panschin’s hierarchy. When a sinister thug approaches Veronica demanding to buy the White Elephant, she learns that old sins cast long shadows, that some people never forget, and that the mysterious guest Airik is hiding se- crets of his own. The Bride from Dairapaska On a terraformed Mars, an abused wife risks all to save her family and change the world By Odessa Moon On a terraformed Mars, young Debbie Miller was sent far from her rural village as part of a marriage compact between the rulers of two demesnes. A peasant who knew only obedience, she accepted her duty to bear her husband’s children and work along- side him. But when they were sent to build a village in a barren patch of no- where, her abusive husband forces her to take action. She flees with her children and their dog into the vast open steppes where dying was preferable to life with him. Debbie only wanted to escape, but her encounter with the Steppes Riders, and especially Yannick of Kenyatta, un- wittingly ignites changes that attract the attention of Mars’ ruling families. Left to her own resources, Debbie must adapt to her new life and figure out how to de- fend her adopted people. The Steppes of Mars series imagines a transformed world where a disaster on Earth decades ago cut off all contact with its wealth and re- sources. Experience a Mars where its genetically modified inhabitants have developed their own cultures, beliefs, and religions. A semi-feudal world where ruling families control vast demesnes under a central gov- ernment at Barsoom. A world of limited resources where train travel is possible but cars and planes are not. A world of free-cities — open and domed — villages, vast fields and steppes, and people banding together to survive and thrive in this harsh new world. About the Author Odessa Moon has painted, sewed, served in the Navy, worked as a sales clerk and cashier, cared for her family, and gardened with enthusiasm. While growing up, she read piles of science-fiction and fantasy, and she continues to read extensively, especially on subjects like medieval his- tory, the class struggle, colonization, and resource depletion. For every emotion and feeling the Victorians used flowers, bushes, and trees to express it. Not just love, attraction, and desire, but also doubt, indifference, slander, and cruelty. They created beautiful bouquets and tussie mussies to express their connection to the natural world and feelings — not all of them pleasant — to each other. We’re rediscovering this bygone way to communicate our deepest thoughts and emotions and “A Dictionary of Flowers and Gems” can help. We’ve taken 2,000 plants, supplied their scientific name, and arranged them from Aaron’s Beard ([Hypericum calycinum]: Invincibility, Protection) to Zinnia, yellow ([Zinnia]: Daily remem- brance, Remembrance). We also resorted the plants according to emotions, such as Aban- donment: Anemone (Zephyr Flower), Field Anemone, Grape, Japanese Anemone (Windflower), Jasmine Anemone, Red Anemone, Wildflower Anemone, and Zeal: (Elderberry, Wake-robin (Arum)). Finally, we created specialty lists to cover emotions such as court- ship, love and affection, beauty, and refusal, making it easier to create themed bouquets and gardens. There are also lists for color connections, birth month flowers and anniversary flowers, making this the most use- ful flower reference on the market. A bonus section lists more than 400 gems and crystals and their associated powers and benefits. See which ones strengthen the chakras, encourage feelings of peace and calmness, radiate love, and fortify self- confidence. “A Dictionary of Flowers and Gems” provides an easy-to-use refer- ence for quick consultations for practitioners of the floral and gemstone arts. That is not because everyone has read Arthur Conan Doyle's stories about this famous character. Ever since the stories were first published in 1887 they have been adapted into screen films and television series. During these 100 years the character has also transformed. Newer adaptations have also been inspired by previous adaptations, which changes the Holmes that was first created by Conan Doyle into a character that the everyone who adapts him contributes to. Film adaptations are a filmmaker's interpretations of stories and characters. In recent years several Sherlock Holmes adaptations have been created. Many alterations regarding the original stories by Doyle have been made to please the contemporary audience. Due to limited time and space, this thesis shall focus mainly on the BBC series Sherlock created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, which first aired in 2010. Gatiss and Moffat have analysed the characters and stories thoroughly; they have then deconstructed them en reassembled them in twenty-first century England.

Common sense warning: The book you are about to read is dangerous. If you are from the English language media sphere, virtually everything you may think you know about contemporary Rus- sia; its political system, leaders, economy, population, so-called opposition, foreign policy and much more is either seriously flawed or just plain wrong. This has not happened by accident. This book explains why. This book is also about gross double standards, hypocrisy, and venal stupidity with western media playing the role of willing accomplice. After reading this interesting tome, you might reconsider everything you “learn” from mainstream media about Russia and the world. Honorary Member, Emeritus photo courtesy of Bill Vande Water William Stuart Baring-Gould 1913-1967 William S. Baring-Gould was a Time executive whose contributions to the literary world (and especially to Sherlockians) are manifest. Mr. Baring-Gould was a descendent of the well-known author and archivist Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) who was a featured character in Laurie King's book The Moor. He was the author of numerous important Sherlockian works including, Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, The Chronological Holmes and the famous The Annotated Sherlock Holmes. The Annotated Sherlock Holmes is considered by many Sherlockians as his crowning achievement and is a must in every Sherlock Holmes Collection. He authored other works, including The Lure of the Limerick: An Uninhibited History, Nero Wolfe of West Thirty-fifth Street (a work about the detective whom some speculate is the "son" of Sherlock Holmes) and collaborated with his wife, Ceil, onThe Annotated Mother Goose, Nursery Rhymes Old and New. All of these works are important volumes in their respective literary worlds. Mr. Baring-Gould was BSI and invested as "The Gloria Scott". Julian Wolfe said at his passing: "In the true Irregular tradition, and in accordance with the precepts of Christopher Morley, he was always ready to encourage young Sherlockians, many of whom owe much to his valuable asistance." • Telling the True Story
Bachelor Thesis Telling The True Story Queerbaiting, representation, and fan resistance in the BBC Sherlock fandom Suzanne Frenk 613191 Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen (Culture Studies) School of Humanities Tilburg University Supervisor: Dr. P. K. Varis Second Reader: Dr. I. E. L. Maly August 18, 2017 Synopsis In this thesis, I follow an online community on Tumblr revolving around a self- proclaimed conspiracy theory called TJLC. This group is part of the broader community of fans of the BBC TV show Sherlock, and is focused on ‘The Johnlock Conspiracy’: the belief that the two main characters of the show, John and Sherlock, are bisexual and gay, respectively, and will ultimately end up as a romantic couple, which would make Sherlock a mainstream TV show with explicit and positive LGBTQIA+ representation. This visibility is especially important to LGBTQIA+ individuals within the TJLC community, who want to see their identities more often and more accurately represented on television. The fact that the creators of Sherlock, as well as several of the actors in the show, are either part of the LGBTQIA+ community themselves or known supporters, works to further strengthen TJLC’ers’ trust in the inevitable unfolding of the story into a romantic plot. The fact that the TJLC community is based on a conspiracy theory not only makes it a remarkable example of fan culture, but has also led to many close readings of the show and its characters – from the textual level to symbolism to the musical score – on a level that can often be seen as close to academic. These pieces of so-called ‘meta’ have led to many predictions about the direction of the show, such as the strong belief that ‘Johnlock’ would become real in season four of the series.

  • Not Your Grandfather's Sherlock Holmes
d “nOt YOuR GRandFatHeR’S SHeRlOCk HOlMeS”: Guy Ritchie’s 21st Century Reboot of a 19th Century british Icon Ashley Liening Sherlock Holmes “has enjoyed the most vigorous afterlife of any fictional character” posits thomas leitch, adaptation scholar and author of Film Adaptation and Its Discontents (leitch 207). Indeed, a franchise has been built around Sir arthur Conan doyle’s quirky detective, so much so that Sherlock Holmes has become one of the most adapted literary figures of all time, outnumbered only by Frankenstein’s monster, tarzan, and dracula (207). Clare Parody asserts, “Franchise practice has produced and surrounded some of the highest grossing and best-known fictional texts, characters, plots, and worlds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,” and Sherlock Holmes is no exception (211). From 1900 till the present day, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by “nearly 100 actors, in over 200 films, from more than a dozen different countries,” and it does not appear like “Sir arthur Conan doyle’s violin- playing, pipe-smoking, cocaine-injecting sleuth” is going any- where anytime soon (Cook 31). In fact, the twenty-first century has experienced a resurgence in more “straightforward” Holmes adaptations, namely bbC’s Sherlock (2010), which aired in three ninety-minute episodes and portrays a tech-savvy twenty-first century Holmes, and Guy Ritchie’s 2009 and 2011 35 big screen adaptations, the latter of which will be the focus of this essay. I aim to explore the ways in which Guy Ritchie’s Sher lock Holmes (2009) adaptation, while inextricably bound to Conan doyle’s storytelling franchise, diverges from its prede- cessors in that it is not an amalgamation of other Holmes adap- tations.
