In that interview, Ben Carson came closer than ever before to saying that he might run for President. He said, "If the circumstances were to evolve in such a way that that [running for President] seemed to be what God was calling me to do, I would certainly do it. And, I would never turn my back on my fellow citizens, if there was a hue and cry for such." Again, on January 7, 2014, in an interview by Newsmax reporter, Bill Hoffman, Dr. Carson re-affirmed that he will run if people continue to "clamor" for him to do so and if he feels that God is calling him to run for President. I feel confident that Dr. Carson will run for President if you and I make it clear to him that millions of Americans from coast to coast continue to raise a hue and cry for him to run. Dr. Carson is indeed the right person in the right place at the right time to save our nation from financial collapse, and to restore the rule of law through adherence to the Constitution of the United States of America. Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish2 The U.S. penitentiary is a locus of extreme violence, repression, and control. Its operations are based on a scopic system that subjects detainees to intense and constant surveillance over every inch of the body. This violence is compounded by fights, rapes, beatings, and bodily deprivations that constitute prison life and the lived experi- ences of prisoners. This volatile atmosphere is organized and struc- tured by the everyday reality of detention and other forms of “legiti- mate force,” the sanctioned violence and punishments inflicted by the state or its agents.3 Yet within the heart of such savage confines, something quite remarkable takes place. Reviewed by Michele Goodwin & Erwin Chemerinsky We are all already polluted. — Eula Biss (p. 76) INTRODUCTION Nearly a century ago, the United States found itself in the midst of a health crisis related to individuals it found to be socially unfit. At the time, social unfitness and “imbecility” were thought to be genetical- ly inscribed and heritable — contagious within the gene pool. Howev- er, as with many diseases, states feared that these conditions could be masked; how would they know who was unfit? Was it possible that the unfit could contaminate the broader gene pool? If so, how could states prevent this so-called genetic pollution from entering and spreading in their states? Eugenics policies provided a compelling answer for more than thir- ty states that adopted such legislation. Eugenics laws were designed to limit the reproductive capacities of Americans whom legislators per- ceived to be socially or mentally damaged, and therefore genetically unfit. Such laws literally stripped away the right to reproduce. Con- cerns about genetic and social contamination were so deeply rooted in the American consciousness that eugenics laws were adopted with rel- ative ease throughout the nation. The U.S. Supreme Court took up the issue in an infamous 1927 test case, Buck v.     Media, Race and Obama’s First Year: A Study of African Americans in U.S. News Coverage As a group, African Americans attracted relatively little attention in the U.S. mainstream news media during the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency -- and what coverage there was tended to focus more on specific episodes than on examining how broader issues and trends affected the lives of blacks generally, according to a year-long study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism and its Social and Demographic Trends Project. From early 2009 through early 2010, the biggest news story related to African Americans was the controversy triggered by the arrest last summer of a prominent black Harvard University professor by a white Cambridge, Massachusetts police officer. It accounted for nearly four times more African American-related coverage than did either of two biggest national “issue” stories covered by the mainstream media during the same period - the economy and health care. PEW RESEARCH CENTER’S PROJECT FOR EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM The study finds that 9% of the coverage of the nation’s first black president and his administration during Obama’s first year in office had some race angle to it. Here, too, this coverage was largely tied to specific incidents or controversies rather than to broader issues and themes. These findings come from an examination of more than 67,000 national news stories that appeared between February 16, 2009 and February 15, 2010 in different mainstream media outlets, including newspapers, cable and network television, radio, and news websites.
