CHRISTOPHER GUNNING COMPOSER Christopher Gunning has enjoyed a career spanning four decades as a composer of music for films, television, and the concert hall. After studying with Edmund Rubbra and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, he initially worked as an arranger, recording albums with Mel Torme, Shirley Bassey, Cilla Black, The Hollies, Colin Blunstone, and Phil Woods. He also provided the music for several advertising campaigns, including Martini (The Right One), Black Magic, Terry’s Allgold and Lloyds Bank. For his work in films and television, Christopher has won four BAFTA awards forLa Vie en Rose, Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Middlemarch and Porterhouse Blue, and three Ivor Novello Awards for Rebecca, Under Suspicion, and Firelight. His scores for The Big Battalions, Wild Africa, Cold Lazarus, When the Whales Came and Winalot also received nominations for BAFTA and Ivor Novello Awards. Most recently he was presented with a Gold Badge Award by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. For the past ten years or so, Christopher has been concentrating on concert music. He has composed seven symphonies and concertos for the piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and guitar. His Piano Concerto and Symphony no 1 are available on the Albany label, and his Symphony no. 3 and Symphony no. 4 and his Concerto for Oboe and String Orchestra are available on the Chandos label in recordings by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer. Chandos have also released The Film and Television Music of Christopher Gunning, performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Rumon Gamba. Also just recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are Gunning’s Symphony no. 5 and his Concertino for Flute and Small Orchestra, performed by Catherine Handley with the composer conducting, and his Guitar and Clarinet Concertos have just been recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Craig Ogden and Michael Whight as soloists.
