Before embarking on a similar analysis of the music, we’ll first consider some routes into using film music with composition: it’s a useful way for students to learn how to understand both atmosphere and storytelling in music. STARTING POINTS For me, it’s an absolute must that as teachers, we take the time to listen to music. In the case of film music, that means rising to the challenge of listening to more of it. That can be tricky, however – but here are some thoughts on the subject: Make sure you have time scheduled for your own personal listening. You can justify it to yourself because it is crucial planning. Work out a time in the week when you can shut yourself away from the world, either at home or at work, and just listen to music. Make sure you have access to one of the many online streaming services. It can be complicated, but maybe your school can pay for the service, or you might have to take the plunge and subscribe yourself.

The Indian Film Festival, which runs Tuesday through April 26, includes five feature films making their world premiere, five making their U.S. premiere and another five making their L.A. debut. The festivities begin with the world premiere of Anand Surapar's "The Fakir of Venice" at the ArcLight Hollywood Cinemas. Ani Kapoor of "Slumdog Millionaire" will also be saluted during the festival with screenings of two of his classic films and the premiere of the English-language version of 2007's "Gandhi, My Father," which he produced. www.indianfilmfestival.org The Polish Film Festival has its gala opening Wednesday at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood with a screening of "Perfect Guy for My Girl." It continues through May 3 at Laemmle's Sunset 5 Theatre and other venues in Los Angeles and Orange counties. www .polishfilmla.org -- French composers Two of the late Maurice Jarre's great scores -- for 1985's "Witness" and 1986's "The Mosquito Coast" -- are featured in the American Cinemathque's weekend retrospective "The French Music Composers Go to Hollywood" at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The beautiful music begins tonight with a double bill of 1981's "Woman Next Door," composed by Georges Delerue, and 2001's "Read My Lips," scored by Alexandre Desplat. Michel Legrand supplied the score for 1968's "The Thomas Crown Affair," screening Friday with Michel Colombier's score for 1984's "Against All Odds." The Jarre double feature is scheduled for Saturday.

Those of you who have visited our panto over the last two decades may know that Solihull’s ‘Mr Panto’ Malcolm Stent is hanging up his frilled shirt and golden waistcoat and stepping down from his mammoth role after 27 years! He’s built the show into a family favourite and was thrilled to be honoured in Her Majesty’s New Year Honours list for his ’Services to Entertainment’. He enjoyed a fabulous day at Buckingham Palace in the Summer and is rightly proud of his medal. He decided to make Jack & The Beanstalk his last panto but, like any true stage pro he won’t stop working… so he’ll continue to write and perform, here and around the Midlands. We’ll continue to stage professional pantomimes here and the show will be ‘re-booted’ next year or as they say in Dr Who… regenerated! We’ll continue to welcome back our family audiences of all ages continuing our fantastic pantomime tradition here in Solihull.     How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.2 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 2 T H E S U B T L E T I E S, I N T R I C A C I E S A N D E X Q U I S I T E T E N S I O N S O F T V M U S I C In this chapter we will examine the music for some notable television dramas and documentaries, all of which have, to varying degrees, subtlety, introspection and /or elements of minimalism as hallmarks of their identity. This needn’t always mean ‘quiet and closed-off’ but that the composers in each case have scored the films using a degree of restraint and sensitivity. In all cases the music has been pivotal in defining the projects commercially and creatively. The television dramas and documentaries analysed are: Lost (Michael Giacchano) The Waking Dead (Bear McCreary) Midnight Man (Ben Bartlett) Twin Peaks (Angelo Badalmenti) Silent Witness (John Harle) Inspector Morse (Barrington Pheloung) Deep Water (Harry Escott) Inspector Lynley Mysteries (Andy Price) Ten Days to War (Daniel Pemberton) Red Riding (Adrian Johnston) Dexter (Rolf Kent and Daniel Licht) Lost Michael Giacchano Lost is an iconic and successful television series which aired between 2004 and 2010. It follows the lives of survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific. Episodes typically feature a storyline on the island as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character’s life. The enormously evocative and expressive music for Lost is striking both in terms of its style and its narrative function.
