David Janssen and Edward Whitelock. 2009. Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music. Berkeley: Soft Skull Press/Counterpoint LLC. Reviewed by David Gutkin While any attempt to characterize a nation and "a people" is bound to expire in dubious generalization, claims about the essence of the United States and constitution of the "American character" have often been marked by especially outlandish and totalizing rhetoric-by American and non-American writers alike, both affirmatively and critically. j One example is Jean Baudrillard's 1986 book America. Poised as the postmodern successor to Alexis de Tocqueville, Baudrillard, perceiving American culture simultaneously as pre-civilized (an old trope) and as the paradigm of hypermodern simulacral "spectrality," characterizes the nation as both "the only remaining primitive society" and as "a giant hologram."2 If representations of the United States from the last half-century are inflected by the post-World War II phase of American exceptionalism, this has affected not only imperial apologists and vulgar nationalists but even, residually, writers on the left, like Baudrillard. More generally, the United States has always been a strongly symbolic nation, whether imagined as the singular beacon of democracy or as the paradoxical no-place/no-face oflate capitalism. For this reason, critical studies of the American mythos are important, and, as Greil Marcus realized some decades ago, popular music serves as a good lens through which to view the agglomerated fragments of"America."3 Clearly indebted to Marcus, David Janssen and Edward Whitelock, profes sors of English at Gordon College and authors of Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music, take as their entry point into the American imagination a perceived deep relationship between rock and apocalyptic thought.

  • Interview with Bruce Botnick, Producer Of
This interview with BRUCE BOTNICK, co-producer of “Forever Changes” by Love,” was conducted by the Library of Congress on August 10, 2016. Bruce Botnick LIBRARY OF CONGRESS: Legend has it that there was a lot of in-fighting among the members of Love at the start of this album’s recording. Is that true? Did you know that going in? And how did you mitigate that? BRUCE BOTNICK: I tried not to get too involved in the drama. The reason we brought in the Wrecking Crew [a group of talented studio musicians working in LA at the time] was that the band really was just not together; they didn’t have a common purpose. Arthur [Lee] was actually starting to look to replacing parts of the band but never verbally said it out loud, but the band could feel it. So, in this instance, when we brought in the Wrecking Crew, it rattled the band’s cage a bit, causing them to come to the front and then they played really well. They didn’t want to end up not being part of the album. LOC: You have worked with both the Doors and Love. Can you compare your studio experiences with both groups? BB: With the Doors you had four individuals who were one. With Love, you had one individual—Arthur Lee. Arthur wrote most of the music and the lyrics. The record was all Arthur’s, except for the two songs Bryan MacLean wrote, “Alone Again Or.” and the beautiful and haunting “Old Man.” But Arthur was it.

  • Merrimack College at the Intersection of Rock and Rap Analyzing The
Merrimack College At the Intersection of Rock and Rap Analyzing the History of Fusions Dillon Cloonan Senior Capstone for Music Major Dr. Laura Pruett May 15, 2020 1 The start of a brand-new decade never fails to feel refreshing. It is a time to reflect on the ups and downs of the past ten years, and mentally wipe the slate clean as the fresh decade approaches. Preparing for what the future will bring is an exciting thought, and what will come next is inevitably unpredictable. The same is absolutely true for music. A decade is a fantastic lens for examining the changes in popular, live and underground music. Every single decade since the 1920’s has brought forth new changes in style, instrumentation, performance and delivery. Some of the most notable of these changes include the emergence of jazz in the 1920’s, the popularization of Big Band in the 40’s, the British invasion in the 60’s, the fight for the legitimacy of rap in the 80’s, and the domination of synths and computer music beginning in the 2000’s among dozens of other examples. However, the most interesting example throughout decades to analyze that was not mentioned is the fusion of rap and rock styles of music in the popular eye beginning in the mid 80’s and 90’s. The alliance of these two styles of music impacted our current landscape for music more dramatically than any other combination. The importance of this specific fusion stretches from the general public’s acceptance of hip-hop itself, and the gateway for other styles of music to be blended with rap, such as country, metal, jazz, and electronic music among others.

  • The Compelling Argument to Induct LOVE & Arthur Lee Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
The Compelling Argument to Induct LOVE & Arthur Lee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame The following information about the band you may or may not be familiar with should answer questions as to why LOVE should be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & why Arthur Lee should be inducted as a songwriter. Eligibility 54 years after releasing their first LOVE record, music history has demonstrated that LOVE has unquestionable musical excellence & talent; LOVE has had a significant im- pact on the development, evolution & preservation of rock & roll. LOVE’s first album was released in 1966. LOVE & Arthur Lee continued to release albums for 5 decades after that. 182+ bands/artists have covered LOVE songs in the 5 decades following the 60’s. YouTube has many young rock bands from various countries covering LOVE songs as late as 2014. That’s maximum influence! I humbly submit this information to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Nominating Com- mittee for their consideration. Please understand that LOVE is still revered to this day in the UK for having “changed rock & roll forever.” You cannot walk 200 yards in any direction without running into someone who has their albums, especially Forever Changes, so they say. This makes sense, as LOVE toured the UK to throngs of fans. In fact, LOVE Revisited with Johnny Echols on guitar & vocals played 9 venues in July 2016 there, with Johnny teaming up with young British rockers to play LOVE songs to an audience of 80,000+ at an outdoor event. This proves continuing relevance of LOVE music 50+ years on.

Here, Andrew Hultkrans explores the myriad depths of Loves bizarre and brilliant record. Charting bohemian Los Angeles descent into chaos at the end of the 60s, he teases out the literary and mystical influences behind Arthur Lees lyrics, and argues that Lee was both inspired and burdened by a powerful prophetic urge. Make no mistake about it, Love’s Forever Changes is an album deserving of intellectual study. Not many albums are. With all the cerebral (and pseudo-cerebral) literary comparisons undertaken with Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison lyrics, it’s clear that Arthur Lee should receive some of the same treatment.Hultkrans’ enthusiasm is obvious, but his analyses are often overwrought. On the positive side, a number of worthy sources and ideas are scattered throughout this short book. Hultkrans discusses how “Alone Again Or,” though written by Brian MacLean, was in line with some hermetic tendencies exhibited by Lee.
