It argues that in the long run, human actions have unsuspected effects upon the environment. In fact rabbits were seen initially as an opportunity for economic development because of the exploitation of their meat and skin. Later, rabbits became a plague in different areas of Central Chile, Tierra del Fuego and Juan Fernández islands, which was difficult to control. Over the years rabbits became unwelcome guests in Chile. Key words: Environmental History, biological invasions, European rabbit, ecology and environment. RESUMEN Este trabajo analiza las relaciones entre los seres humanos y su ambiente, a partir de la historia de la aclimatación y posterior invasión de conejos en Chile, constatando que, en el largo plazo, las acciones humanas tienen efectos e impactos insospechados sobre el medio natural. En efecto, si bien inicialmente los conejos fueron vistos como una oportunidad de desarrollo económico a partir del aprovechamiento de su piel y su carne, pronto esta especie se convirtió en una plaga difícil de controlar en diversas regiones del país, como Chile central, Tierra del Fuego e islas Juan Fernández. -

WISCONSIN DNR FISHERIES INFORMATION SHEET LAKE MINNESUING, DOUGLAS COUNTY 2017 The WDNR conducted a fisheries assessment of Lake Minnesuing, Douglas County from April 5 to April 13, 2017. Lake Minnesuing is a 432 acre drainage lake and has a maximum depth of 43 feet. The fishery includes panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. After perfusion with penicillin G, the second incision was closed. The base of the plug was slipped into the first incision and sutured to the lumbodorsal fascia with 5-0 Mersilene (Ethicon). After perfusion around the plug with penicillin G, the skin was sutured around the narrow neck of the plug and the incision was dusted with antibiotic powder. The bat could be lifted by the plug with no apparent discomfort and no distortion of the skin or damage to the electrodes. -

Sargeant, and Dave Shutler Abstract: Species ratios and rangewide distributions of American black ducks (Anas rubripes Brewster, 1902) and mal- lards (Anas platyrhynchos L., 1758) have undergone recent changes. Mechanisms behind these changes are not known with certainty, but recent investigations have focused on the possibility of competitive exclusion and the consequences of hybridization. Consequences of hybridization have been difficult to assess because of the difficulty in identifying hy- brids beyond the F1 generation and lack of means to quantify introgression in wild populations. We documented a postmating isolating mechanism between the two species that follows Haldane’s rule in controlled, interspecific matings in captive populations. Hybridization reduces the proportion of F1 females available to return to the breeding grounds in the subsequent year. This effect, although likely small in overall population consequences in any year, may be of lo- cal significance and may contribute to recent reports of range shifts in both American black ducks and mallards. Résumé : L’importance relative des canards noirs (Anas rubripes Brewster, 1902) et des canards colverts (Anas platyr- hynchos L., 1758) et leur répartitiol’échelle de leur aire totale ont encouru des modifications récentes. Les mécanismes responsables de ces changements ne sont pas connus avec précision, mais des études récentes ont examiné l’exclusion par compétition et les conséquences de l’hybridation. Les conséquences de l’hybridation sont difficiles à évaluer car il n’est pas facile d’identifier les hybrides au-delà de la génération F1 et il n’y a pas de moyen pour quantifier l’introgression chez les populations sauvages. -

The wild rabbit: plague, polices and pestilence in England and Wales, 1931–1955 by John Martin Abstract Since the eighteenth century the rabbit has occupied an ambivalent position in the countryside. Not only were they of sporting value but they were also valued for their meat and pelt. Attitudes to the rabbit altered though over the first half of the century, and this paper traces their redefinition as vermin. By the 1930s, it was appreciated that wild rabbits were Britain’s most serious vertebrate pest of cereal crops and grassland and that their numbers were having a significant effect on agricultural output. Government took steps to destroy rabbits from 1938 and launched campaigns against them during wartime, when rabbit was once again a form of meat. Thereafter government attitudes to the rabbit hardened, but it was not until the mid-1950s that pestilence in the form of a deadly virus, myxomatosis, precipitated an unprecedented decline in their population. The unprecedented decline in the European rabbit Oryctolagus( cuniculus) in the mid- twentieth century is one of the most remarkable ecological changes to have taken place in Britain. Following the introduction of myxomatosis into Britain in September 1953 at Bough Beech near Edenbridge in Kent, mortality rates in excess of 99.9 per cent were recorded in a number of affected areas.1 Indeed, in December 1954, the highly respected naturalist Robin Lockley speculated that 1955 would constitute ‘zero hour for the rabbit’, with numbers being lower by the end of the year than at any time since the eleventh century.2 In spite of the rapid increases in output and productivity which British agriculture experienced in the post-myxomatosis era, the importance of the disease as a causal factor in raising agricultural output has been largely ignored by agricultural historians.3 The academic neglect of the rabbit as a factor influencing productivity is even more apparent in respect of the pre-myxomatosis era, particularly the period before the Second World War. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A parasite-host and a host-parasite checklist of helminths found in Soricomorpha (= Insectivora) of North America north of Mexico are presented. The parasite-host checklist includes a total of 114 species of helminth parasites reported in the literature from 28 species of insectivores, totaling 349 records. These include 97 species from shrews (9 trematodes, 34 cestodes, 50 nematodes, 4 acanthocephalans) and 23 species from moles (3 trematodes, 4 cestodes, 10 nematodes, 6 acanthocephalans). Each helminth species is listed under its most current accepted taxon, with all known synonyms, dis- tribution by state/province, and references for each geographic location. The following new combinations are proposed: Lineolepis pribilofensis (Olson, 1969) n. comb. for Hymenolepis pribilofensis Olson, 1969; Monocercus soricis (Nei- land, 1953) n. comb. for Molluscotaenia soricis (Neiland, 1953) Spasskii & Andreiko, 1971; and Eucoleus blarinae (Ogren, 1953) n. comb. for Capillaria blarinae Ogren, 1953. The state of knowledge of helminths of insectivores in North America is briefly discussed. Granholm DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND SEASONALITY Townsend's mole is found along the North Coast in Del Norte and Humboldt cos., from the Oregon border south through about two-thirds of Humboldt Co. Optimum habitats are annual grassland, wet meadow, and early seral stages of redwood, Douglas-fir, mixed conifer, and montane hardwood-conifer forests. Townsend's mole in California mainly is a species of lowland river bottoms. SPECIFIC HABITAT REQUIREMENTS Feeding: Earthworms comprise 55-86% of the diet, with the remainder insects, seeds, roots, leaves, slugs, snails, and small mammals (Wight 1928, Moore 1933, Pedersen 1963, Whitaker et al. 1979). Forages beneath the surface in light, base-rich soils. Cover: This mole is almost entirely subterranean, spending its time in underground burrow systems. Requires well-drained, friable soil for burrowing. Reproduction: Nests in a grass-lined cavity 15-20 cm (6-8 in) below the surface. Nests sometimes are placed under "fortresses" (large mounds of earth 75-125 cm (30-50 in) in diameter), or near the center of a cluster of several normal-sized mounds (Kuhn et al. 1966, Maser et al. 1981). Water: Water needs are met from the diet, especially from earthworms. Pattern: Prefers well-drained, friable soils. Avoids dense woods and thickets. Clearing, draining, and fertilizing of cropland and pasture may have increased numbers of Townsend's mole. -
