Fochabers, Moray Area profile Fochabers is located on the east bank of the River Spey, 10 miles East of Moray’s largest town Elgin. The villages name comes from the Gaelic words ‘feith’ meaning bog and ‘aber’ meaning ‘river-mouth’. The village was founded in 1776 by Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, on grounds close to Gordon Castle. Fochabers is regarded as one of the best examples of a planned village that were built during the Scottish Enlightenment period in the late 18th century. The village is home to the world renowned family-run food manufacturers Baxters. The village lay on the main A96 route between Aberdeen and Inverness until a bypass was constructed and opened in January 2012 at a total cost of £31.5 million. © Crown Copyright 2016 Corporate Policy profile Fochabers had a population of 1,728 in 20111 which is an increase of over 15% from 1,499 residents in 2001. Over the same period, in comparison to Moray, Fochabers population grew at over twice the rate. The age profile of Fochabers shows that the median age, in 2011, for females was 48 and 43 for males, respectively five and two years higher than the Moray average.
