This is done by analysing four different series from 2010s, in which incest is a major theme. The analysis is done using visual analysis. The study concludes that although the series can show sexualization of drawn underage girls, reading the works as if they would posit either real or fictional little sisters as sexual targets. Instead, the analysis suggests that following the narrative, the works should be read as fictional underage girls expressing a pure feelings and sexuality, unspoiled by adult corruption. To understand moe, it is necessary to understand the history of Japanese animation. Much of the genres, themes and styles in manga and anime are due to Tezuka Osamu, the “god of manga” and “god of animation”. From the 1950s, Tezuka was influenced by Disney and other western animators at the time.

    OTHERNESS AND IDENTITY IN SHONEN MANGA ALEX JAMES LEWINGTON DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF YORK SOCIOLOGY AUGUST 2020 ABSTRACT This thesis explored how Otherness was identified and interpreted by adult readers within the United Kingdom, through their engagement with shonen manga. Using semi-structured interviews of 40 participants, 21 males and 19 females, this study investigated how UK manga readers contemplated Otherness, when the concept was broken down into overarching themes of exclusion, dehumanization and Othered identity. This study examined how questions of Otherness led readers to consider manga in relation to their identities. The findings indicate UK readers consider Otherness in relation to struggles of identity recognition and value. The Other is interpellated by UK manga readers as either a threat to power hierarchies between the Self and the Other, or a means for the Self to reinforce such hierarchies. The findings further suggest that UK manga readers commonly consider themselves to be the Other by way of social rejection, devaluation and systematic disregard; they often perceive themselves as underdogs; their identification of Otherness themes and their propensity to identify with Othered characters largely depends on their lived experiences of Otherness. Furthermore, UK manga readers widely report manga to be an inspirational medium, the reading of which is empowering, boosts self-esteem, encourages readers to embrace Otherness, to resist conformity to social norms, and inspires a never-give-up attitude in their pursuit of recognition. Lastly, their engagement with manga beyond the textual level provides UK manga readers with a sense of belonging within a community of other Others.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Globalization and the Emergence of Japanese Influence in American Popular Culture By Gina Celeste O’Melia Dissertation Director: Dr. R. Brian Ferguson The contemporary and prevailing theories that critique globalization often focus on a central concept of the United States having an exceptional and pivotal role in the mechanisms of globalization. However, while Hegemonic Imperialism scholarship focuses on the concept of the United States exporting its cultural wares in order to transform foreign cultures into a homogeneous one, the fact that the United States’ own popular culture is being transformed by globalization is often overlooked. As better predicted by theories outside of this hegemonic imperialistic lens, American popular culture has been and continues to be influenced by Japanese cultural products. This study sought to explore this influence through a series of approaches. The first was through a brief survey of the shared American-Japanese historical and media relationships. Saturday Morning cartoons were then analyzed through both a quantitative content analysis and qualitative genre based analysis from 1987-2012.

Steven O’Branovich Professor Madancy 3/17/15 Otaku – A Case of Assigned Identities 1 Introduction With the international rise in popularity of anime and manga in the 1990s, Japan shattered its image as a nation of soulless salary men and robots and became an entertainment giant. Since then, anime has become an even larger force in the global cultural landscape, growing from a niche tape-trading market at science fiction conventions to inspiring large-scale conventions of its own. The driving force behind this expansion is a group of people known as otaku. Internationally, otaku are often defined simply as enthusiastic fans of Japanese popular culture and of anime and manga in particular. In Japan, however, the term “otaku” has a more negative connotation, denoting enthusiasts whose obsession with their hobbies drives them to seclusion and deviant behavior. Despite making positive strides in recent years, the overall perception of otaku in Japan has been negative.
