The Direction of Memory for Music for Popular and Novel Songs by Susan Rose Sibma Supervisor: Dr Craig Speelman A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Award of Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) with Honours The Faculty of Community Services, Education and Social Sciences, Edith Cowan University October 2003 USE OF THESIS The Use of Thesis statement is not included in this version of the thesis. Direction of Memory for Music u DIRECTION OF MEMORY FOR MUSIC FOR POPULAR AND NOVEL SONGS Abstract Previous research on memory for music has typically measured participNits' reaction times (RTs) and accuracy in tests of recall and recognition of songs presented to them. The current study was interested in what occurs during the time that elapses between stimulus onset and the generation of a response. It has been suggested that people sing or hum to themselves as they search for an answer (Rubin, 1977), but a question that has been overlooked to date is in what direction this occurs. As music unfolds in time, it was proposed that in memory for music, 'forward is best'. In the current experiment, 44 university students and 6 members of the public were asked to identifY whether the second excerpt (probe line) of a pair of excerpts taken from a song, came 'before' or 'after' the first excerpt (target line) in the normal course of the song. Seven pairs of excerpts, three pairs falling before the target line, and four pairs occurring after the target line, were presented for each of eight popular and two new songs heard earlier. It was predicted that RTs for identifying the probe lines occurring 'after' the target line would be shorter than those coming 'before' the target line. Results supported this hypothesis with significantly shorter RTs in the 'after' condition than the 'before' condition, and indicated that memory for music is biased in a forward direction. An explanation of the structure oisong, and the integration effect of melody and text is presented to accommodate the fmdings. Author: Susan Sibma Supervisor: Dr Craig Speelman Submitted: 27.10.2003 Direction of Memory for Music iii Declaration I certify that to the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis neither: (i) incorporates without acknowledgment any material previously submitted for a degree or diploma in any institution of higher education; nor (ii) contains any material previously published or written by another person without due reference having been made to it in text. Sig (Susan Sibma) Date: Direction of Memory for Music )v Acknowledgments I sincerely thank my supervisor Dr Craig Speelman for his unrelenting encouragement, guidance, patience, and constructive comments throughout this year. His thorough professionalism and sharing of knowledge of both research methodology and the subject matter enhanced my personal learning experience. To Terry Simpson I owe a newly found interest in computer-based testing. Her generous sharing of expert knowledge in setting up my experiment was invaluable. Thank you to the School of Psychology staff members who were cheerful and supportive in every way. The experiment would not have been possible without the students from Edith Cowan University and volunteers from the public who shared their precious time with me. For this, I am very grateful. Many thanks to my sisters Anne and Carolyn, and my brother Geoffrey for helping in the selection of the music tracks, and to my nieces Susan and Catherine for their original music composition. Finally, I offer my heartfelt thanks to my family. Thank you to Sjoerd for allowing me some time and space to complete this thesis, to Tjom for his wise counsel, to Kurt for his patient and crucial practical help, and to Liesl and Craig for their moral support every day! Without you all, getting up to and through this year would not have been possible. • Stumbling Into Heaven Jesse Winchester by Daniel Wolff – 2000
Stumbling Into Heaven Jesse Winchester By Daniel Wolff – 2000 Daniel Wolff's bestselling biography of Sam Cooke, "You Send Me," won the Ralph J. Gleason Award for best music book of 1995. His writing on photography includes the first nationally published article on Ernest C. Withers in Double Take, and he is a contributor to the Danny Lyon retrospective catalogue, "Photo Film, 1959-1980." His poetry has appeared in numerous journals, including the Paris Review and Partisan Review. "The Memphis Blues Again: Six Decades of Memphis Music Photographs," has just been published by the Penguin Group. Books by Daniel Wolff are available at amazon.com, and other on-line sites, as well as most booksellers. Below find Wolff's wanderings through Jesse Winchester-land. _______ In the parking lot behind the r&b club, the band is taking a break, and a young man approaches his hero. The young man is a student at the local Catholic high school, the middle-class son of a lawyer. His hero is the bandleader, Willie Mitchell, who will go on to national fame as the producer of the classic soul singer, Al Green. But at this time -- 1959, 1960 -- he's fronting a six-piece, horn-driven combo that is the regular house band at the Manhattan Club in Memphis, Tennessee. As the players have a smoke and try to cool off in the thick Southern air, the young man moves closer. "I just worshipped these musicians," he recalls. "I wanted to be them." Back at Catholic school, he's in a rock&roll band that plays the CYO dances.

  • Too Funky 2 Ignore Demonstrates Just How Accomplished He Has Become at the Craft
HHIIRRAAMM BBUULLLLOOCCKK TOO FFUUNNKKYY 22 IGNORE BHM 1010-2 Over the course of his career -- from his mid ‘70s run with The Brecker Brothers to his various stints as a“hired gun” for everyone from Gil Evans, Carla Bley and David Sanborn to Michael Franks and Miles Davis -- Hiram Bullock earned his reputation as a bona fide guitar hero. But all along, Bullock has also been developing his skills as a songwriter. Too Funky 2 Ignore demonstrates just how accomplished he has become at the craft. “I think I’ve gotten better at it as I’ve been doing it,” says the charismatic Guitar Man. While the funk quotient on Bullock’s 12th recording as a leader is off the charts and the album is chockfull of blistering, Hendrixian guitar licks, Too Funky 2 Ignore also showcases Hiram’s adeptness at meticulously layering track upon track in the studio in a Steely Dan-ish vein. “I have actually consciously focused on that craft,” says the guitarist-producer. “And part of what allowed me to do that was getting a studio of my own. The technology has increased to the point where now a regular person can have a studio at home. And because of that, I can cut a track and then sit with it for months if I need to -- rework a lyric or work on backing vocals and rhythm guitar parts. So it’s not like it used to be where you go into the studio and sing all the lead vocal stuff in one day and what you get on that day is what you have on the record.

  • James Brown Sample Culture Jones
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Northumbria Research Link URL to article: http://fifteen.fibreculturejournal.org/fcj-103-james-brown-sample- culture-and-the-permanent-distance-of-glory/ James Brown, Sample Culture and the Permanent Distance of Glory Steve Jones University of Sussex But here I am, the man Who started it all, and I’m glad, ‘Cause I’m number one, original, I know I’m bad ‘I’m Real’, James Brown Perhaps unsurprisingly, the James Brown song ‘I’m Real’ (1988) features the man himself lending a vocal turn (or two) to the track. The song contains numerous lyrics regaled from James Brown’s earlier hits (including ‘Make it Funky’ (1971)) and also James Brown vocal samples from ‘Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine’ (1970) and ‘Get on the Good Foot’ (1972). This chronologic duality is the starting point of the problem that concerns us here. Funkalicious. The question is simple (even if the answer is not). Why sample James Brown’s voice when the man himself was in the studio recording a vocal? What purpose could it serve, especially when he was already replicating moments from previous hits? During the 1980s, the rise of hip-hop altered the landscape of American popular music. Sampling became a common formal technique, and the music of James Brown was arguably the predominant catalogue source for samples used. James’s frustration at being ‘replaced’ and having his work overtly plundered is evident in ‘I’m Real’. Here, he attempted to out-manoeuvre his new rivals by sampling his own work, thus asserting his status as original author of the sound snippets that were being frequently employed without direct acknowledgement.
