Maurice Garin, l’ancien montagnard du Val d’Aoste, remporte cette première édition devant 60 compagnons de route. Il avale les 2428 km en 94 h 33’ 14 ‘’ à la vitesse moyenne de 25,67 km/h, en six étapes, du 1 er juillet au 19 juillet 1903. Le deuxième, Lucien Pothier met 2 h 49 de plus que lui. Ce premier Tour de France ne connaît pas les régles d’aujourd’hui : les coureurs se débrouillent pour s’alimenter et faire leurs réparations eux-mêmes, sans aucune aide, avec un matériel archaïque et un seul vélo autorisé. Toutefois, il est disputé seulement en plaine, ce qui convient bien aux qualités de rouleur de Garin. Celui-ci est aidé par sa phénoménale résistance qui lui permet de ne jamais manger sur le vélo, en dépit de la distance de chacune des étapes supérieures à 400 kilomètres. Dans la France de la fin des années d’après-guerre et du début des Trente Glorieuses, il a joui d’une très grande popularité. Bobet est aussi le champion breton d’une France centralisée qui s’essaie à la régionalisation et d’une province qui se modernise à grands tours de roue. Ses origines familiales sont typiques de cette époque de l’histoire du sport et elles jouèrent un rôle non négligeable dans la construction de son image et de sa popularité. -

Tour de France The Tour de France is the world’s most famous, and arguably the hardest, cycling race. It takes place every year and lasts for a total of three weeks, covering almost 3,500km. History of the Race During the late 19th century, cycling became a popular hobby for many people. As time went on, organised bike races were introduced and professional cycling became very popular in France. On 6th July 1903, 60 cyclists set off on a race and covered 2,428km in a circular route over six stages. 18 days after setting off, 21 of the original 60 cyclists made it back to the finish line in Paris. The winner was Maurice Garin and the Tour de France was born. Except for war time, the race has taken place every year since then and has become more challenging with the addition of mountain climbs and longer distances. The Modern Tour de France Each year, the tour begins in a different country. The route changes annually too, though usually finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. In 2019, the race starts in Brussels, Belgium on the 6th July and ends in Paris on the 28th July after 21 stages totalling a distance of 3,460km. There are 22 teams taking part in the Tour de France, each with eight riders. The reigning champion is Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas. Introduction Ottavio Bottecchia died on June 15, 1927. Ninety years have since passed, but he has not faded into oblivion. If you pause to listen, you can hear the faint sound of his breath. The echoes of his horn, echoing through the mountains, the great horn of Orlando. Bottecchia does not merely belong to the histories of sport or Italy, but in the tales of heroic deeds. His accomplishments are too great for reporters, they should be told by the poets. He emerged at the time of the "giants of the road". Audacious and pure, defying the ambushes. The bicycle was his sword, the Excalibur next to which he died. The mountain roads of Friuli were his battleground. Throughout Bottecchia's life, heroism, mystery and tragedy are all interwoven with glorious embellishment. If Bartali was the champion of faith, then Bottecchia was the hero of war. If Bartali was the river Jordan, then Bottecchia was the Piave. Bartali was like a crusader, he had an army at his back and God on his side. Bottecchia stood alone, an embodiment of all these values. Face to face with Rommel at the Tagliamento. He was the prisoner that escaped three times. He was the champion of migrants. His footsteps have been traced by millions of Italians. Those who were cannon fodder. Those with cardboard suitcases. Those who crossed boundaries and challenged the unknown. Those who, instead of a bank account, had two counsellors: dreams and despair. Unusual and little-known Tales from the ‘Tour de France’ 1903 – 1947 With Barrington Day The line between insanity and genius is said to be a fine one, and in early 20th century France, anyone envisaging a near 2,500km cycle race around the country would have been widely viewed as unhinged. But that didn’t stop Géo Lefèvre, a journalist with L’Auto magazine at the time, from proceeding with his inspired plan. His editor, Henri Desgrange, was bold enough to believe in the idea and to throw his backing behind the Tour de France. So, on 1st July 1903, sixty pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. After six mammoth stages (Nantes - Paris, 471 km!), only 21 “routiers”, led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end of this first epic. Having provoked a mixture of astonishment and admiration, le Tour soon won over the sporting public and the roadside crowds swelled. The French people took to their hearts this Tour Founder - Henri Desgrange unusual event which placed their towns, their countryside, and since 1910, even their mountains, in the spotlight. Le Tour has always moved with the times. Like France as a whole, it benefited from the introduction of paid holidays from 1936; it has lived through wars, and then savoured the “trente glorieuses” period of economic prosperity while enjoying the heydays of Coppi, Bobet, Anquetil and Poulidor. It has opened itself up to foreign countries with the onset of globalisation. Over a hundred years after its inception, le Tour continues to gain strength from its experience. -

19691903LESLES ANNÉESANNÉES- HÉROÏQUESLUMIÈRE 19901929 LUCIEN PETIT-BRETON Né le 18 octobre 1882 à Plessé (Loire-Atlantique), décédé le 20 décembre 1917 à Troyes. l s’appelle de son vrai nom Lucien Mazan, mais I on a trouvé plus pratique de l’appeler par son surnom, le Petit Breton. On aurait pu aussi l’appeler le Petit Argentin, puisqu’il a passé son enfance à Buenos Aires où ses parents ont émigré à la fin du xixe siècle et où il a découvert les joies du cycle. Le premier double vainqueur Revenu en France en 1902, Lucien Mazan, établi dans la région nantaise, découvre les grandes courses sur piste où il fait fureur en poussant de longs cris quand il se dresse sur les pédales pour accélérer. On l’appelle alors « le Sauvage » Specta- teur des triomphes de Maurice Garin sur le Tour en 1903 et 1904, Petit-Breton se lance à vingt-deux ans dans l’aventure et se classe 5e en 1905 de la course remportée par Trousselier. L’année suivante, il est 4e : pas de doute, il est bien un homme du Tour, mais est-il de taille à le gagner ? L’édition 1907 lui donne la réponse. C’est le Tour d’une grande première, une étape hors de l’Hexagone : à Metz, en territoire allemand depuis 1871, que le gouverneur de la ville, le comte Zeppelin, a ouvert avec joie au Tour. Le grimpeur Émile Georget domine le passage des Vosges et des Alpes, mais il est sanctionné dans l’étape Toulouse-Bayonne pour avoir échangé sa machine avec celle d’un autre coureur après une crevaison à Auch. -
