Living on campus will help your student adjust to college life with the help of upper class staff and leaders who have learned the ropes!

This booklet will answer many questions you have as you prepare to move onto campus in the fall. While here for Orientation, you'll be able to tour a room In the hall you have been assigned; and both housing offices will be available to answer your questions. FIRST YEAR RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT What is more important than having a great experience at college? Graduating, of course! Living on campus will give you the advantage you need to complete your education.

Log on to the Housing website for more information about our residential policy for first-year students: louisville.edu/housing/first-year-live-on-policy.html.

Still think you can do well without living on campus? You will need an approval to do so. Please view the link and fill out the form for exceptions. Students who can demonstrate that they meet one of the following conditions may petition for an exemption from the policy: a) residing with a custodial parent or guardian for the academic year; b) 21 years of age or older; c) veteran of the U.S. Armed Services; d) married; or e) custodial parent or guardian of a child. Students with other extenuating circumstances may also petition for a waiver.

EXEMPTION PROCESS The petition for an exemption is located at louisville.edu/housing/forms/firstyearexemption.html. Students will not be required to pay the application charge when requesting an exemption. Notice of exemption decisions will be sent within three weeks to the e-mail address the student listed on the exemption request.

FIRST-YEAR GUIDES The First-Year Guide is an upper-class mentor assigned to assist first-year students with the transition to college during the first eight weeks of school. First-Year Guides serve as a role model, resource and university ambassador within the Housing and Residence Life support network. Individual attention is given regarding academic success, campus involvement, community building, living with a roommate, etc. First-Year Guides maintain a high level of communication and interaction with students in the residence halls and at campus activities.

RESIDENT STUDENT ASSOCIATION The goal of RSA is to make residence life an unforgettable experience, ensure that residents’ voices are heard and give consideration to students’ suggestions. ALCOHOL POLICY If UofL students at least 21 years of age decide to drink alcohol, the University explicitly recommends only low-risk use and condemns the misuse and abuse of alcohol. The University of Louisville supports the following statements related to the consumption of alcohol by students: 1. It is acceptable not to drink alcohol and each individual should make a personal, informed choice, keeping in mind: a) by law, you must be at least 21 years of age to drink alcohol, b) if you are at least 21 years of age and choose to drink alcohol, you should do so in a low-risk manner, c) consumption of alcohol should not be the main focus of any event you attend. 2. Rave Alert is designed to provide rapid notification via text messages to alert students, faculty and staff of an emergency on or adjacent to campus. Rave works on most text-message-capable cell phones (or other digital devices) and requires no hardware or software installation by the receiving party. Individuals who want to take advantage of this system must enroll via the UofL main web page at Louisville.edu/alerts. Parents are welcome to sign up for UofL rave alerts as well.

TECHNOLOGY Remember that file sharing copyrighted materials, such as music, games, movies and software, is a violation of federal law as well as the University’s Computer Usage Agreement. The music and movie industries scan the Internet for copyrighted media. When they find such instances on campus, they contact our IT department. Once notified, the University has no choice but to disconnect the internet privileges of the guilty party.
