thorium exposure after Innamincka Hot Following the Habanero well- head blow-out, Geodynamics site Manager Mr. Bill Austin Rocks explosion held a series of community briefings to appraise locals and visitors of the ongoing situation at the leaking well.

Many residents believed that the foul-smelling gas which could be smelt close to the site and in the town when the wind blew from the south, was Thorium.

A man with many years experi- ence in oil and gas drilling, who left the company , after Habanero # 1 was spudded, predicted that radio-active gases and Thorium would be found at levels similar to those of the Habanero wells.

Residents of Innamincka were in- formed on 3 March 20/10 of a change in personnel at Geodynamics’ Habanero #3 site near Innamincka.

The role of Habanero Site Man- ager has been made redundant and a new role of Area Manager Cooper Basin has been created.

Current Site Managers, Mr. Bill Austin and Mr. Leonard Spencer were both considered for the new Area Manager role, but were un- successful in their applications and as such are both being re- trenched.

Mr . Austin will be missed by the Innamincka community. Bill al- ways attempted to address com- munity concerns and to answer questions about the Habanero operation.

Mr. Austin ably managed the po- tentially dangerous situation dur- ing the Habanero well-head in- cident in April 2009 and was in- strumental in facilitating the stabilization and evacuation of a critically ill resident from Innamincka on Christmas Day. Public Health Statement for Thorium (part of) Studies of thorium workers have shown that breathing thorium dust may cause an increased chance of develop- ing lung disease and cancer of the lung or pancreas many years after being exposed. Changes in the genetic ma- terial of body cells have also been shown to occur in workers who breathed tho- rium dust. Liver diseases and effects on the blood have been found in people in- jected with thorium .. ...Thorium is radioactive and may be stored in bone for a long time, bone cancer is also a potential concern for people exposed to thorium.
