Amities 2017 A newsletter for Parents and Pupils CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) Inside this issue ’ Issue 3 2017 The CCE Department planned a variety of Life Skill activities earlier this year for our Primary 1 to Primary 6 pupils to equip them with self-sufficiency skills to help them look after themselves. It was part of the school's vision in providing a holistic education that prepares pupils to meet the challenges of life. The programme was also part of the school’s character development plans as such appropriate age-group skills teach pupils to be independent and self-reliant. In partnership with the Central Parent Council (CPC), the following Life Skill activities were carried out with the help of the Parent Volunteers (PVs) and teachers. At the end of the programme, many pupils enjoyed learning the different life skills from their teachers and parents. The pupils also appreciated the PVs for their selfless contribution as they had learnt a valuable skill that can be applied for life. Issue 3 2017 A total of 223 Primary Five students and 16 teachers celebrated Singapore’s 52th birthday with the other schools at The Float@Marina Bay on 15 July 2017. A sea of red and white filled the Padang. The NDP theme this year is #OneNationTogether. It is depicted with a logo of 4 hands interlocked in unity and strength. The intertwined hands symbolise Singaporeans from all walks of life setting aside our differences and coming together with the conviction of building a better Singapore of tomorrow. Red is the primary colour of the logo, reflecting our celebratory mood as we commemorate Singapore’s 52nd year of independence. It also represents the unwavering determination and passion of our people. The white in the logo symbolises the everlasting purity and virtue of our nation. The image of our island, nestled in the centre of the four hands, represents the special place that Singapore will hold in the hearts of all Singaporeans. The celebration commenced with the talents displayed by the Red Lions, the Dynamic Defence Unit and the Military Tattoo. This was followed by a show, comprised of six acts, exploring different contemporary issues that Singaporeans face and how together, we are able to ensure that Singapore flourishes. Act 1 – Living Together Applauds our active participation in creating liveable spaces and turning our country into a City in a Garden. Act 2 – Growing Together Represents the great human endeavours of love, harmony and acceptance. Act 3 – Thriving Together Testament to Singaporeans’ unwavering resilience and unceasing innovation. Act 4- Celebrating Together Highlights our exceptional unity in diversity. Act 5- Progressing Together Charts our journey forward as a future-ready society with tender hearts. 300 drones were up in the air at the same time, forming seven formations: an arrow, a heart with a crescent and five stars, an outline of Singapore Island, the Merlion, children, the NDP 2017 logo and a hashtag. It is the first drone show in NDP and the largest in South- east Asia. Act 6 - #One NationTogether A spirited reflection of our past, present and future. As #OneNationTogether, we will break new grounds and scale new heights. The celebration ended off with a spectacular display of fireworks. Students and teachers appreciated every effort that the organizers of the NDP had put in to make the celebration a memorable one for all. Issue 3 2017 Nek Eton and family were back in CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) for the Hari Raya Assembly Programme. Through the skit, students learnt that the Muslims fast from early morning and are only able to eat in the evening during the fourth prayer of the day, known as Maghrib. Muslims not only have to abstain from eating and drinking, but also have good conduct and be on their best behaviour at all times. We also learnt that is alright for non- Muslims to be eating and drinking in the presence of our fellow Muslim friends. However, the girl in the skit wanted to wait for the time to break fast so that she could eat with her friend who was fasting. We were introduced to the different types of food and kuih that are served during the celebrations. Nek Eton showed us Kuih Tat (pineapple tarts), Meringue and Chocolate Chip Cookies. She also shared that she would be cooking rendang and lontong. Nek Eton tested pupils on their knowledge of Hari Raya Puasa, too! They were able to answer the questions correctly as they were all paying attention to the lively performance. As Hari Raya is a time of celebration, Muslims also renew and strengthen their relationships with family and friends by seeking forgiveness for all their past wrongdoings. In the skit, Nek Eton was reunited with her daughter whom she had not met for several years on Hari Raya Puasa. It was such a heartwarming moment! Even our teachers and fellow schoolmates were a part of the Hari Raya celebrations. We are very proud of the Shazriana and Shazfierah who for the first time, stood in front of the whole school and hosted the show. Mrs Joy Drysdale and Ms Nur Atiqah trained them so that they were able to host confidently on that day. They were also very lucky to snap a photo with local celebrity Hyrul Cikgu Nur Arafah ML Department Issue 3 2017 In line with the theme of ‘To Serve with Love’, our school’s Founder’s Day Celebrations this year saw staff and pupils preparing ‘Love packages’ for the underprivileged children in Laos, Thailand and the Philippines. A week before Founder’s Day, staff and pupils brought in items that they wanted to give to the children. The whole school then packed the items together on Friday and wrote little messages for the children overseas. On 26 May, Founder’s Day itself started off with a celebration of Mass, where the ‘love packages’ were offered. Pupils also watched a video to understand how their simple act of kindness could help another person. Truly, it was a service of love. Pupils learnt more about their Founder, Blessed Nicolas Barre, reflected on how he had served with love and thought about how his legacy could be lived on. They also wrote Thank You notes to their Founder. Pupils went home feeling grateful for an IJ Education due to Blessed Nicolas Barre’s commitment to serve with love. Issue 3 2017 P1/2 Lower Primary Games Day 2017 – GAMES 4 US! YEH!!! Our little ones had a ball of a time on 4 August playing their hearts out. They were simply experiencing the pure joy of movement through physical PLAY. Our ever supportive CPC and wonderful team of parent volunteers provided tremendous support. Our enthusiastic parents readily took on the awesome tasks as Games Masters and Games Chaperones. Pupils displayed team spirit and cooperation and had fun playing games with their classmates. The Inter-house relay events helped promote bonding, provided opportunities for pupils to cheer their team-mates on and to challenge themselves to try out “new” skills. Everyone participated and no child was left behind. Pupils were also delighted to receive the goodie bags and mini emoji cushions. The fun-packed hour long event for each level included activities such as Flying Rockets, Shooting Stars, Hurdling Champions and Balancing “eggs” on spoons. Fast Feet required pupils to hop in gunny sacks and zip down on skate-scooters. We hoped that through the various fun events, the pupils learnt to adopt a “Can Do” attitude and as such, build up their resilience. Good on you all! Ms Kian HOD PE/CCA Organiser .
