Relationships among all subtribes of Neotropical Cymbidieae (Orchidaceae) were estimated using combined matK/ycf1 plastid sequence data for 289 taxa. The matrix was analyzed using RAxML. Bootstrap (BS) analyses yield 100% BS support for all subtribes except Stanhopeinae (87%). Generic relationships within subtribes are highly resolved and are generally congruent with those presented in previous studies and as summarized in Genera Orchidacearum. Relationships among subtribes are largely unresolved. The Szlachetko generic classification of Maxillariinae is not supported. A new combination is made for Maxillaria cacaoensis J.T.Atwood in Camaridium. Zusammenfassung Die antillanische Flora ist eine der artenreichsten der Erde. Trotz jahrhundertelanger floristischer Forschung zeigen jüngere Studien, daß der Archipel noch immer weiße Flecken beherbergt. Das trifft besonders auf die Familie der Orchideen zu, deren letzte Bearbeitung für Cuba z.B. mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert zurückliegt. Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf der lang ausstehenden Revision der Orchideengattung Pleurothallis R. Br. für die Flora de Cuba. Mittels weiterer morphologischer, palynologischer, molekulargenetischer, phytogeographischer und ökologischer Untersuchungen auch eines Florenteils der anderen Großen Antillen wird die Genese der antillanischen Pleurothallis-Flora rekonstruiert. Der Archipel umfaßt mehr als 70 Arten dieser Gattung, wobei die Zahlen auf den einzelnen Inseln sehr verschieden sind: Cuba besitzt 39, Jamaica 23, Hispaniola 40 und Puerto Rico 11 Spezies. Das Zentrum der Diversität liegt im montanen Dreieck Ost-Cuba – Jamaica – Hispaniola, einer Region, die 95 % der antillanischen Arten beherbergt, wovon 75% endemisch auf einer der Inseln sind. -

The Neotropical orchid genus Mormolyca Fenzl, as currently circumscribed, encompasses a diverse group of ca. 27species. Many of these were included traditionally in Maxillaria sect. Rufescens, when similarity of floral morphology was considered foremost in their classification rather than the evolutionary history of the taxa. In order to begin revising species delimitation and clarifying the evolution and biology of the genus, we present a phylogenetic hypothesis using sequence data from five plastid loci (rpoC1, matK gene and flankingtrnK intron, atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer, and the 3’ portion of ycf1) and the nuclear ribosomal internal and external transcribed spacers (ITS, ETS). Resulting trees using both Bayesian and parsimony inference are congruent with each other, and generally well resolved. Based on current level of sampling across Maxillariinae, these molecular data support the monophyly of Mormolyca and shed light on the interspecific phylogenetic patterns within the genus. These include an early divergent paraphyletic grade of Mormolyca species successively sister to a clade with at least two definable subclades within. The latter are characterized by two different flower morphologies that are likely related to their pollination systems. Although not all relationships within the genus are fully resolved or supported, these results offer a first glimpse into the phylogeny of a small group of epiphytic orchids characterized by an unusually high level of variable vegetative characters, floral fragrance profiles, and pollination systems. -

Phragmipedium warscewiczii is reported as new record for the Mexican orchid flora from material recently collected in Chiapas. The species is described from Mexican specimens and it is compared with P. exstaminodium, its closest ally. The Mexican locality is the northernmost and most distant population for P. warscewiczii. Information on nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and factors of risk for this orchid is provided. Key words: Chiapas, cloud forest, Cypripedioideae, Phragmipedium section Caudatum, Phragmipedium exstaminodium, endangered species. Resumen. Phragmipedium warscewiczii es reportada como registro nuevo para la orquideoflora mexicana a partir de material recientemente recolectado en Chiapas. Esta especie se describe a partir de ejemplares mexicanos y se le compara con P. exstaminodium, su pariente más cercano. La localidad mexicana es la más norteña y más distante para P. warscewiczii. También se proporciona información sobre nomenclatura, distribución, hábitat y factores de riesgo de esta orquídea. A new species of Porroglossum (Pleurothallidinae), Porroglossum raoi Baquero & Iturralde, apparently endemic to a cloud forest close to Chical, is described here. Porroglossum raoi is compared to known species within the genus growing close to the area where it was discovered. The big white flower, the thick, subclavate and brown-purple lateral sepal tails, a single subacute angle on the lower margin of the petals and a strong cinnamon and clove smell, immediately separates this from other species in Porroglossum. Taxonomical and ecological notes are given. KEY WORDS: Pleurothallidinae, Porroglossum hoijerii, Porroglossum section Porroglossum Introduction.
