When he enlisted for service in the Duke of Cornwall's regiment, he was a carpenter by trade like his father before him. Formed from 424 and 425 Flights, this was the base of 235 squadron , then No. 9 Operations group from April 1st 1918. From August RNAS Newlyn (Lands End) was headquarters of the newly formed No. 71 (Operations) Wing, incorporating the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy Air Service. 'Equally sharp is the recollection of a low‐flying aeroplane, with its roundels large and clear, which skimmed over us boys as we sat on the Old Green beach, and we noted the unusual engine note, for it was making a forced landing and came down, with considerable damage but no loss of life, a short distance away.' Also in the photo is his wife Sarah Richards née Cattran( daughter of William Batten Cattran) and their son, also John Richards. The son emigrated in 1923 to America. The father John lived at Wherrytown after his marriage, first in Coastguard Row (afterwards named Bath Cottages) and then in West Terrace. 1298 Photo of WW1 Sea plane base, Newlyn 1917. The Royal Naval Air Service used Sandy Cove as an air base during WW1 4525 Details about private Hugh Jacka who was killed in WW1 and Sergeant AE Hurley wounded in WW1and died on return to UK. Both are uncles of Joy James. 4652 Descendents of James Carne b1812.The family lived in Newlyn Town at Factory Row and Florence Terrace, Church Lane. Ancestors of Bertha Carne who married Herbert Ernest Quinton when he was stationed at Newlyn as a member of the RNAS. He was an Air Mechanic 3rd class and working on the Flying Boats based at Newlyn during WW1.Results of query from Stephen Quinton (copy in file). 4762 Transcription of a letter from Private Joseph Edward Wilesmith, 1892‐1924, who served in France in WWI and died shortly returning home from mustard gas poisoning.
