Porthill close in on Western Division crown despite a scare from Nantwich … Upton tighten grip on second place after Oxton record first win against Nantwich … Trinity and Didsbury still unbeaten in Eastern Division, but Didsbury progress checked by sensational tied game at Georgians … Third victory for Lindow in Development Division … Appleton score a major coup by defeating League XI in the replacement for the MCC fixture … Porthill’s Jones and Leigh’s Collins and Mullan to feature in Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy CHESHIRE WOMEN’S LEAGUE Summer Series Western Division – August 16: Porthill Park 86-9 (30; Becky Cripwell 43*, Bethan Robinson 3-9, Kelsey Barker 3-10) (25pts) Nantwich 68-8 (30; Madi Hudson 23, Ellie-Mae Davies 2-6, Cripwell 2-12) (6pts) • Porthill Park maintained their 100 per cent record, but not in the manner they have been used to. After winning their first four matches by such dominant margins, being reduced to four wickets for three runs after five overs, and then to 9-5 by Nantwich bowlers Bethan Robinson and Kelsey Barker was perhaps not what they were expecting. Their remaining batsmen and their bowlers managed however to pull this one out of the bag – Becky Cripwell continued her fine form with both bat and ball. Upton 117-9 (30; Philippa Dagger 53, Freya Davies 3-20, Ellie Grisedale 2-13, Molly Price 2-17, Hattie Nickson 2-18) (25pts) Oxton 67 (25.5; Tessie Nickson 15, Lucy Andrews 15, Alexa Harrison 15, Dagger 2-3, Ellen McGowan 2-15, Hannah McGowan 2-15) (6pts) • Upton’s good form continued with this local derby victory and they stay in second spot. Philippa Dagger’s bowling performances have been to the fore of late but here she certainly shone with the bat as well. August 23: Oxton 69-4 (30; Freya Davies 13*) (25pts) Nantwich 51 (19.2; Grace Michel 11*, Davies 3-7, Hattie Nickson 3-19, Ellie Grisdale 2-7) (2pts) • Oxton edged a low scoring contest and lifted themselves off the bottom of the table as they became the last team in either of the two senior divisions to register a victory this year. Upton 80-8 (30; Madi Arthur 13*, Gemma Rose 3-23) (25pts) Chester Boughton Hall 68-6 (30; Rose 16*, Philippa Dagger 2-11, Ellen McGowan 2-13) (5pts) • Another low scoring affair saw Upton strengthen their grip on second place by completing a league double over Chester. Porthill Park were not in action today, but the two results mean they will clinch the Western Division title with two games to spare if they beat Upton next Sunday. Summer Series Eastern Division – August 16: Leigh 84-8 (30; Ella Smith 32, Emma Royle 3-4, Hattie Roberts 2-13) (4pts) Stockport Trinity 85-4 (26; Jenny Dunn 31*, Carys White 22) (25pts) • Unbeaten Stockport Trinity and Didsbury seemingly remain on collision course for their two encounters over the final three weekends of the season after both recorded their latest victories today. Trinity were made to work much harder than they expected when Leigh were reduced to 24-6 batting first, as Hattie Roberts and, especially, Emma Royle wreaked damage amongst the Lancashire club’s top order. Royle’s return of three wickets for four runs in six overs was another illustration of how she can be one of the league’s most consistent opening bowlers. After this, Ella Smith led a recovery of sorts, but would the target be enough to trouble Trinity? The answer, to some degree, was yes, as Trinity’s powerful looking top three was unable to dominate against some accurate bowling, but Jenny Dunn remained undefeated to see her side over the line. Didsbury 213-4 (30; Roshini Prince-Navaratnam 97, Mishel Jeena 55*, Leesa Mellon 26, Amelia Sammons 2-29) (25pts) Ashton-on-Mersey 60-8 (30; Beth Caunce 15, Marianne Lea 2-4, Hana Rafiq 2-9) (3pts) • Didsbury turned on the style as they recorded the highest team score in any division of the 2020 Summer Series, passing the previous mark of 202 set by Porthill. Roshini Prince- Navaratnam fell three short of a century but her individual score is the highest of the year so far in the Eastern Division and has been bettered only by Evelyn Jones in the Western Division. Marianne Lea’s two wickets for four runs in five overs was one of the impressive bowling analyses as Didsbury completed their fifth victory. Trinity and Didsbury meet at Wythenshawe on Sunday August 30 and then at Trinity on September 13. August 20: Didsbury 121-1 (16; Roshini Prince-Navaratnam 61*, Leesa Mellon 32*) (15pts) Stockport Georgians 121-7 (16; Liv Bell 40, Hana Rafiq 2-27) (15pts) • Didsbury maintained their unbeaten record, but lost their 100 per cent record, in an extraordinary tied match at Stockport Georgians. It all seemed to be going to plan for Didsbury when Roshini Prince-Navaratnam continued her superb recent form and her side scored in excess of 7.5 runs per over. However, their opponents duly matched that total, coming within an ace of what would have been the finest victory in their short history. August 23: Ashton-on-Mersey 70-6 (25; Amanda Gettins 30, Emma Royle 2-4, Hattie Roberts 2-16) (3pts) Stockport Trinity 71-1 (16; Kate Harvey 33*) (25pts) (Restricted to 25 overs per side due to rain) • A fifth straight victory for Trinity and another one that started with some early wickets from Emma Royle and Hattie Roberts. After Didsbury’s tied match in the week, Trinity are now just 15 points behind with a game in hand. While two of the Stockport club’s remaining three matches are against Didsbury, and Trinity’s local derby against Georgians on September 6 will be far from a formality, Trinity are in the favourable position of knowing two wins from three will land them the Eastern Division title, save for a freakish occurrence such as a zero point loss in the other match. Summer Series Development Division – August 11: Lindow 104-5 (20; Michelle Hesslegrave 51, Gemma Rose 3-13) (25pts) Chester Boughton Hall 2nd XI 68-8 (20; Sarah Friend 21, Lily Beckley 3-9, Hesslegrave 2-4) (6pts) • Lindow’s third victory of the season, and the winning margins have got larger each time. Michelle Hesslegrave made the development division’s first half century of the year, and the match also featured some of the best bowling returns in this division so far. August 16: Wistaston Village 100-3 (20; Jen Regan 39*) (25pts) Heaton Mersey & Cheadle 93-1 (20; Charlotte Appleyard 44*) (7pts) • Heaton Mersey & Cheadle came close to their first victory, but Wistaston held on to open their own account for the 2020 season. Chester Boughton Hall 2nd XI 98-6 (20; Hannah Thorley 30*, Nandu Valliyil 24, Jenny Wallace 4-12) (25pts) Langley 44-9 (20; Abbey Lamidey 14) (4pts) • Chester scored more than double the total of their opposition, scoring freely off the rest of the Langley attack even if Jenny Wallace produced a fine spell. Children who started school year 7 in September 2019 are not permitted to play any open age cricket. Any child wishing to play in open age cricket must have been in Year 8 or above in September 2019. Cheshire Youth Cricket will not be selecting age group squads for the 2020 season, therefore any child in year 7 does not meet ECB criteria for playing in any open age cricket. Players in year 7 can train with other juniors up to and including the Under 17 age group, as long as the club take steps to ensure it is a suitable training environment for each player. Coronavirus update Additional restrictions were imposed in the council areas of Oldham, Blackburn and Pendle on August 21. However, residents of these areas can continue to play recreational cricket. Permanent transfers • Isabelle Blamires - Leigh to Ashton-on-Mersey Matches that can be re-arranged • Eastern Division – Stockport Georgians v Leigh • Development Division – Wistaston Village v Langley SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET Cheshire Women’s League XI 129-9 (40; Beth Caunce 47*, Abbey Gore 3-27, Kathryn Jackson 2-11) Appleton 130-7 (39.1; Rebecca Othick 41*, Laurie Sheridan 37, Emily Stones 2-15) Appleton scored something of a coup by defeating a league representative team that looked especially strong in the bowling department in the fixture played on August 13.
