The Scarecrows

As a contribution towards this year’s Haselbury in Bloom, Haselbury Women’s Institute was invited to make a scarecrow for the village green and help advertise the Yesterday’s

Farming weekend. The WI put a small tribe of scarecrows up in time for the judging on 19th July. Very sadly, that same night our display was vandalised.

Someone visited the green, armed with a spray-can of blue paint and liberally sprayed the scarecrows, clothes, hats, faces to disfigure them. More unpleasantly, they also sprayed swastikas on the front and back of our largest scarecrow, and on all four sides of the two beautiful wooden tubs of flowers that the Haselbury in Bloom team had put on the green.

This was not mindless, drunken, accidental damage. This was a planned, targeted and carefully executed attack on the cheerful display. We abhor such anti-social behaviour in our community.

WI members and husbands revamped the scarecrows, and the WI is very grateful to Jim and Jeanette Farrant for cleaning up their beautiful plant tubs.

We know the scarecrows gave pleasure to many during their stay, but after two of them were kidnapped, the rest of the family called it a day and withdrew from the green. B. A. We are all gradually waking up to the fact that we need to do as much as we possibly can to Bed and Breakfast minimise the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill or the ocean. Fortunately, (all rooms ensuite) County Council does a great deal by kerbside recycling of plastic bottles and accepting all sorts of plastic containers at their various recycling centres. And I gather that their actual The Glebe House recycling processes are second to none. But that still leaves a huge amount of soft plastic wrapping material that supermarkets force on us. And modern life relies on endless items of Claycastle everyday use that are made of plastic. We know there are public campaigns to curb the use Haselbury Plucknett of some of these: people are for instance fighting to ban single use plastic cups and plastic straws. But we simply cannot avoid bringing a huge amount of throw-away plastic into our homes every time we go shopping.

Luckily for us here in , there are quite a few organisations that can help us deal with this problem. The July meeting saw us Going Wild in the Garden -an illustrated talk given by John and Anne Bebbington.

John’s main interest is animals and Anne is the botanist. Their talk centred on the development of their garden in into an agreeable and supportive habitat for all animals, vertebrate and invertebrate.

Anne took the first half and with the help of superb photographs showed the development of their haven. She talked of their philosophy in mixing wild with domesticated plants. These plantings are designed to attract all insects, e.g. pollinators, The list was impressive from lady’s bedstraw to salvia virides, verbena to flag iris, Welsh poppy to Japanese honeysuckle.

John then delighted us with superb photographs illustrating the many vertebrates and invertebrates attracted by this skilful planting. Wonderful pictures of moths, butterflies, crickets, reptiles, amphibians, in fact all the classes. Some of the photographs were particularly memorable such a grass snake endeavouring to pull a frog out of a pond, by the leg and an elephant hawk moth feeding on nicotiana.

Their talk and illustrations enraptured their audience, as did the quality of the photography.

July also saw Members Display Day when a varied collection of member’s produce was on display from potatoes through the whole range of vegetables to good floral displays and pot plants all to emphasis the spread of interests of members. The usual good day was had, with much gossip over the tea and cakes and jollity with the final auction.

The meeting on 17th September sees the return of an old friend, Katherine Crouch, who will talk on Garden Design and Ornamental Grasses. She is always good value.

Thoughts on the proposal to close Yeovil’s St. Margaret’s Hospice.

Nobody enjoys talking about death - but we are all going to have one. Unfortunately some people need very much more care while they are dying. To help give that extra care sometimes extensive or specialist treatment is needed, and the Hospice movement developed to provide it. Volunteers in Somerset set up St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton. As time passed it became increasingly clear that another Hospice was needed, centred on Yeovil, to provide adequate care for Yeovil and the surrounding region. Enormous local effort succeeded in the task of establishing the outstanding Hospice on the edge of Yeovil. Many families have blessed the endeavours of those who built an invaluable asset and helped keep it going.

Funding relies upon continued local efforts because Central Government provides only 33% of the huge sums needed to pay the increasingly heavy bills. Unless PREDICTABLE funds can be relied upon to plan Budgets there is a proposal to close Home Instead is a well established and highly the inpatient beds but add 4 more in Taunton. This is a BACKWARD STEP for the Yeovil area.
