    Art, Activism and the Creation of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG); Walking With Our Sisters, REDress Project by Gail Gallagher A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Native Studies University of Alberta © Gail Gallagher, 2020 ABSTRACT Artistic expression can be used as a tool to promote activism, to educate and to provide healing opportunities for the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG). Indigenous activism has played a significant role in raising awareness of the MMIWG issue in Canada, through the uniting of various Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The role that the Walking With Our Sisters (WWOS) initiative and the REDress project plays in bringing these communities together, to reduce the sexual exploitation and marginalization of Indigenous women, will be examined. These two commemorative projects bring an awareness of how Indigenous peoples interact with space in political and cultural ways, and which mainstream society erases. This thesis will demonstrate that through the process to bring people together, there has been education of the MMIWG issue, with more awareness developed with regards to other Indigenous issues within non-Indigenous communities. Furthermore, this paper will show that in communities which have united in their experience with grief and injustice, healing has begun for the Indigenous individuals, families and communities affected. Informed by critical Whiteness studies, scholarship on settler colonialism, and reader response theory, I argue how contemporary Indigenous literature facilitates the social and political transformation decolonization requires. When approached with prior knowledge about past and ongoing colonialism, the stories written by today’s Indigenous authors disrupt the settler national myths that normalizes White supremacy in Canada and demands introspection on how settlers perpetuate colonial violence against First Peoples. Their stories extend possibilities for transformative learning by re-centering Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies, and by reframing kindness, reciprocity, and kinship as human obligations.

Necropolitics, as theory, is addressed in relation to these policies. IRS and the Sixties Scoop contributed to intergenerational physiological and psychological trauma, including feelings of a loss of culture and language as well as historical trauma responses of depression and substance abuse. Nonetheless, there remains a spirit of individual and community resilience within many Indigenous communities in Canada. Through a critical discourse analysis and an historical trauma lens, the research examines how national governmental policies have contributed to a disproportionate number of Indigenous children in the child welfare system. This pre-scientific paper examines in what way the occurrences of the past, with European settlers claiming Indigenous lands and trying to assimilate the First peoples to European culture, have shaped the Aboriginal population of Canada and their problems today. Through looking into the topic of residential schools in depth and putting it into relation with the present-day topic of the “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women” (MMIW), this paper aims at finding an explanation to which extent the well-being of Aboriginal peoples in Canada still depends on the occurrences of the past. Thorough literary research was carried out and a survey was conducted at a high school in Vancouver, Canada, in order to present hard facts but also support them with present- day happenings and the opinions of students. Te costs – fnancial, social, health, time, and so on – associated with pursuing the reso- lution of residential schools claims through the justice system have been enormous.
