What Do You Need to Know to Reduce Your Risk?
What do you need to know to reduce your risk? Understand what high risk drinking is Understand Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) Levels and some key points about BAC Understand what a standard drink size is vs. a typical party drink size Know the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning Know the actions to take if someone appears to be suffering from alcohol poisoning High Risk Drinking Participating in drinking games Celebratory drinking (21st birthday, “the big game”, end of semester, graduation, spring break…) Drinking to get drunk Pre-partying/pre-loading Doing shots Chugging Using a funnel, hose, trough or punch bowl Mixing alcohol with any drugs (legal or illegal) Not knowing what you are drinking or how much you are drinking Combining alcohol with energy drinks These are examples, certainly not all the ways you can drink in a high risk fashion. Any drinking that is in high amounts or short periods of time, creating a situation where the body can’t handle the alcohol, is high risk drinking. How the Body Processes Alcohol When a person drinks alcohol, it can enter the bloodstream immediately. The molecular structure of alcohol is small, so the alcohol can be absorbed or transferred into the blood through the walls of the stomach and the small intestine. The stomach actually has a relatively slow absorption rate; it is the small intestine that absorbs most of the alcohol. Once in the bloodstream, alcohol moves through the body and comes into contact with virtually every organ. However, some of the highest concentrations, and certainly the highest impact, is caused by the alcohol when it reaches the brain. -

Caffeine- the Legal Addiction
Caffeine- the legal addiction By Stephanie Palmer Whether your drink of choice is Monster or Rockstar, Jolt or Bawls, you may want to read this before partaking in another can of your favorite boost and /or fix of caffeine. Energy drink companies claim a lot of things when they advertise their products, such as, alertness, improved cognition, increased energy, and so on. However upon researching the information and claims, I found more adverse effects than benefits. First though I thought you might like to hear that you are not alone in your choice to drink energy drinks, because, well, they are everywhere. With over 800 different kinds to choose from and vending machines and retail places all over campus providing a constant supply of caffeine, they are hard to avoid. But sometimes following the crowd isn’t necessarily a good thing. Based on one study I found, 51% of college student reported drinking one or more energy drinks per month. Of that 51%, slightly more were female. Close to three quarters of that 51% drank energy drinks that contained sugar. According to this study there were 6 main reasons for consuming energy drinks: Lack of sleep or insufficient sleep, to increase energy, using at parties in combination with alcohol, studying or finishing a project, driving for long periods of time, and to treat a hangover. 16-20% of the students surveyed consumed energy drinks for at least 1-5 of the situations, and 7% consumed them for all six. As the number of situations increased so did the amount of consumed drinks. -
Easy Open Pull Tab
Easy Open Pull Tab Submitted to the Italian Packaging Technology Competition March 15, 2006 Brian Calcagno Teresa Haynes Hatfield Josh Taylor California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo PROBLEM There are many people in the world who bite their fingernails. Health risks and public annoyance aside, this causes a disability in opening food packages with metal pull-tabs, such as soft drink cans. Since about 100 billion soft drink cans are produced in the U.S. every year (about one per person per day), it’s obvious that these cans are common in every refrigerator (Kyung- Sun). They should be easy to open, and to many they are. However there is still room for improvement to the design, as nailbiters still find some cans difficult to open. Some soft drink can tabs have been rounded at the end, leaving a tiny space for leverage, but this space is only large enough for a strong fingernail. If the person trying to open the package has no such fingernail, he will have a very difficult time getting to his favorite soft drink. A recent innovation in canned soup packaging has used pull-tabs to make can openers obsolete. The larger, heavier design of these poses an even more significant challenge to nailbiters than soda cans. The geometry of the pull tab on these larger cans causes the tabs to resist upward force even more strongly than familiar soda cans. The shape of the score that the tab is supposed to break also affects the amount of force necessary to open the can. -

Hormonal Responses to Non-Nutritive Sweeteners in Water and Diet Soda Allison C
Sylvetsky et al. Nutrition & Metabolism (2016) 13:71 DOI 10.1186/s12986-016-0129-3 RESEARCH Open Access Hormonal responses to non-nutritive sweeteners in water and diet soda Allison C. Sylvetsky1,2,3, Rebecca J. Brown1, Jenny E. Blau1, Mary Walter4 and Kristina I. Rother1* Abstract Background: Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS), especially in form of diet soda, have been linked to metabolic derangements (e.g. obesity and diabetes) in epidemiologic studies. We aimed to test acute metabolic effects of NNS in isolation (water or seltzer) and in diet sodas. Methods: We conducted a four-period, cross-over study at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (Bethesda, Maryland). Thirty healthy adults consumed 355 mL water with 0 mg, 68 mg, 170 mg, and 250 mg sucralose, and 31 individuals consumed 355 mL caffeine-free Diet Rite Cola™, Diet Mountain Dew™ (18 mg sucralose, 18 mg acesulfame-potassium, 57 mg aspartame), and seltzer water with NNS (68 mg sucralose and 41 mg acesulfame-potassium, equivalent to Diet Rite Cola™) in randomized order, prior to oral glucose tolerance tests. Blood samples were collected serially for 130 min. Measures included GLP-1, GIP, glucose, insulin, C-peptide, glucose absorption, gastric emptying, and subjective hunger and satiety ratings. Results: Diet sodas augmented active GLP-1 (Diet Rite Cola™ vs. seltzer water, AUC, p =0.039;DietMountainDew™ vs. seltzer water, AUC, p = 0.07), but gastric emptying and satiety were unaffected. Insulin concentrations were nominally higher following all NNS conditions without altering glycemia. Sucralose alone (at any concentration) did not affect metabolic outcomes. Conclusions: Diet sodas but not NNS in water augmented GLP-1 responses to oral glucose. -
