Re: Plaza Granada Mural RFP

Dear David,

With great pleasure we submit our presentation as a collaborative team for consideration in selection for the Plaza Granada Mural Project. Thanks to the JCCE for creating a fantastic opportunity for any artist focused on public engagement and beautification!

As a resident of Ventura County, I have long had a relationship with Santa Barbara regarding art and local history. I have been a 21 year contributor to the I Madonnari Festival at the Old Mission, creating large scale ephemeral pastel for the public. This festival gave me my 'start' in public philanthropic works, which I carried onwards as my career of choice. Prior to the discovery of I enjoyed a career in mural painting, creating original works in a variety of painting traditions for large hospitality and commercial properties. I continue to work in this capacity on select projects.

My husband Sayak Mitra is an art practitioner from , , who has relocated to Ventura, in hopes of expanding his art career while making a new life here in the US. A gifted designer /artist, he has shown his work throughout India and is a regular contributor to the Kolkata art community. He has worked as a volunteer on several large scale mural projects in Kolkata through the American Center in conjunction with community outreach exchanges.

We thank you again for this opportunity!

Warm regards, Tracy Lee Stum & Sayak Mitra

2 Our Team

Tracy Lee Stum Professional street painter, muralist and instructor with over 20 years of experience, specializing in 3d / anamorphic art design. A former Guinness World Record holder, Tracy is ?a visionary and master in the chalk art world.' Tracyʼs mind-blowing 3D images continue to ?wowʼ, inspire and amaze viewers around the globe. A published author, Tracy is also a US State Department Arts Envoy grant recipient. She has presented art instruction to high school and university students through international workshops worldwide.

Sayak Mitra My main subject matter involves cultural nuance, political issues and social incidents, which are employed to establish discourse on the relationship between simple human emotions - love, happiness, agony - through the language of abstraction. Investigating human values in present time, I take ordinary mundane objects, scenes, symbols & characters, and introduce them as symbols of something much deeper.

The multidisciplinary nature of my work is inspired by fugacious exploration of human existence with unrestricted palette. Using representational elements in union with repetitious forms, I emphasize the pleasures of eternal entanglements. I take from the world around me - whether it be semiotics or journalistic materials like newspaper, magazine photos or television news. It could be something as banal as driving signs, fashionable textile patterns, or any significant infographic I find on my mobile app. The complex union of incoherent images, vivid colors and layered application designed with both digital tools and paint brush, invite us to communicate with the visual evidence gathered.

17 MURAL OVERVIEW

Focusing on innovative design by Sayak Mitra, our team hopes to create a lasting and beautiful mural for the Plaza Granada corridor. Sayak's vision and design aesthetic will guide the identity of the work, while Tracy's extensive professional experience in project management will provide the know how for a successful, smooth and high quality implementation.

Artist Narrative We wish to provide a work which illustrates the artistic experiences which the Granada Theatre has offered throughout the years. Our focus for the composition involves paying tribute to the spectacular architecture and performing arts activities within the Granada.

The composition combines minimalistic forms with a realistic graphic style. Playing with the stunning interior architectural elements, the theatre stage and dynamic visual motion we seek to showcase the best in the performing arts genre. Utilizing elements of this iconic Santa Barbara landmark, we have juxtaposed simple geometrical forms to create a bridge between the past and present, classic and contemporary.

This mural aims to create a sense of engagement long before the public reaches the actual theatre - perhaps allowing them to feel the energy of the performances being presented.

Optional Collaborations Along with designing and painting the mural, we would like to offer the following additions.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT 1. In conjunction with the creation of the mural, we have identified an opportunity to incorporate a youth engagement component to the project. By working with local middle school and high school art classes, we propose inviting select art student teams to the project for one day, hands on training experiences. Preliminary research has shown a positive response to this option.

18 PROCESS DRIVEN EXHIBITION 2. Create and eventually exhibit a body of work derived from research and preliminary preparations of the entire project. From design drafts, sketches, master drawings, digital renderings, production materials, etc. - we hope to create a comprehensive body of work which will tell the story of the making of the mural. Partnering with a local gallery or the Granada would be ideal in showcasing the transformation of the wall to a vibrant city attraction.

Youth Engagement Program Geared towards including SB County School District students, we propose offering a set schedule of training sessions that would target interested art students and managing faculty from a number of district schools.

The schedule would involve inviting a small group of students from several selected schools to work 3 hours with the mural team for one day per each group. We recommend a maximum of 6 students per each school group.

Targeted SB County School District participant schools could include: • Goleta Valley Junior High School • La Colina Junior High School • La Cumbre Junior High School • Santa Barbara Junior High School • Alta Vista Alternative High School • Dos Pueblos High School • La Cuesta Continuation High School • San Marcos High School • Santa Barbara High School

Any number of these schools may participate, not all are necessary.

Tracy, Sayak and experienced assistant artists will conduct educational overviews, demonstration exercises and provide hands on training to the students on site. This workshop component may provide invaluable experience, inspiration and sense of ownership in the process to participating students.
