Submitted by Adam Murray Department of Philosophy In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2016 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Matthew MacKenzie Alexus McLeod Jeffrey Snodgrass Copyright by Adam Robert Murray 2016 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT AN ESCAPE FROM ANGER AND OTHER BUDDHIST CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF EMOTIONS This paper begins with an examination of several theories of emotion in general—a ‘mixed theory’, an ‘attitudinal theory’, and a Buddhist ‘componential theory.’ I argue that the Buddhist theory has a theoretical advantage over these alternatives insofar as it avoids two ‘thin’ characterizations of emotions that exclude either affective or conative states from the concept. The Buddhist theory of emotions, I claim, has another advantage insofar as it brings practicality to the forefront, connecting our theorizing about emotions with what is most important— developing good character and bringing about the welfare of beings. Chapter 2 proceeds to an in- depth analysis of the emotion of anger in particular, examining several philosophically important accounts—those of Aristotle, Seneca, and the Buddha. I raise problems of definition, highlight some typical and contentious features of anger, and draw from several classical sources to reconstruct a Buddhist account of anger. In the final chapter, I argue that typical anger is not necessary for moral life, addressing myself to arguments from Zac Cogley and Emily McRae. I continue by demonstrating that Buddhism has resources that allow us to both eliminate or largely attenuate anger, and to approach the problems we face without anger; finally, I sketch out exactly how this can be accomplished. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project was made possible by the kindness and generosity of family, friends, colleagues, and teachers.     Revisioning Buddhism ©Piya Tan, 2017 The Buddha’s wager1 The Buddha always holds the Dharma first, as evident from the Gārava Sutta (S 6.2),2 which records one of the first key events in the Buddha’s life after the great awakening. In the Mahā,- parinibbāna Sutta (D 16),3 which records his last moments, too, the Buddha declares that the Dharma comes first, before the teacher. However, against the Buddha’s clear instructions, other Buddhist sectarians and later teachers put their Sutras and Teachings first. Such disregard from the Buddha arises from various reasons and conditions, but basically it was (and is) on account of desire for worldly gains and following, for putting down rivalry and dissent, and the influence of worldly conditions and other religions. The Buddha does not make such vital statements frivolously or as an option that we may dis- regard. He has very good reasons for giving us such initial and final instructions. To remind ourselves of the vitality of these instructions we will call them the “Buddha’s wager.” This wager or challenge can be simply put like this: The Buddha holds Dharma above himself. Buddha or no Buddha, Dharma is always there. The later sectarian Buddhist teachers place their Sutras and Teachings first. Without these gurus’ Sutras and Teachings, there are no later Buddhist sects. We don’t need the later Buddhist sects, and can and must go directly to the Dharma. Here, I think, is an almost infallible test for the authenticity of the historical Buddha’s teaching or the Buddha Dharma, the teaching of awakening.

Assuming, from an Eternalist perspective, that actions have effects also beyond the present life, Gotama underlines the necessity of betting on the validity of moral kammic retribution. Having thus demonstrated the central ethical error of Nihilism, he subtly introduces peculiar Buddhist moral concepts ( kusala/akusala ) to purify the Eternalist vision from the doctrine of a real existing self ( attāvāda ) and from the puñña /pāpa dichotomy. We can summarize this dialectical course as follows: Nihilism is pāpa /akusala because it denies kamman , Eternalism is puñña /not-akusala because it upholds kamman from a non-Buddhist perspective, Buddhism is kusala because it admits the law of kamman not centered on a theory of a real existing self (anattāvāda ).

    Mind Blown Lesson 2: Anger, Murder, Adultery and Lust! [Reader: group leader] We’re in the second lesson of a series on the Sermon on the ​ ​ Mount (Matthew 5, 6 and 7). Jesus was the preacher of that sermon, and He said some pretty mind-blowing things. In the first study we read how Jesus said the whole Old Testament centered around Him. Imagine some preacher telling you that in this day and age. Your reaction might be something like that of the kids in this video whose parent hadn’t told them the identity of Darth Vader. Watch Mind=Blown Star Wars Video In this lesson, we’ll see what Jesus has to say about murder, anger, adultery and lust. Hint: It’s not just going to be mind-blowing; it’s going to be completely counter-cultural! But first, let’s be a little counter-cultural ourselves and open in prayer.     7 Deadly Sins: Lust In order to organize the way that we go through the 7 deadly sins, we will follow the pattern that Dante gave us in the Purgatory. In the poem, he is being led in a vision through purgatory and he sees it as a vast mountain, near the bottom are the worst sins and near the top the lesser sins. The penitents climb the mountain, leaving sins behind and eventually attaining heaven. We are actually going to go backwards, down the mountain, starting with the lesser sins and working our way to the more grave ones. The sin that, while still deadly, is considered the least, is Lust. Is Lust even a sin? (Obviously we know it is because it is one of the 7 deadly sins, but suspend belief with me for a moment.) It seems as though perhaps it is not a sin. After all, lust is not an action, it is not hurting anybody else, but it is a feeling. Typically, a sin is an action that we willfully carry out. We cannot be judged by what tempts us, after all, Our Lord was tempted in the desert for 40 days and we know that he never sinned. However, Our Lord also says this, “27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus teaches us how to take the law, the rules and precepts of the moral life, and inscribe those rules on our hearts.

For more articles see www.bswa.org VINAYA Ownership and Administration of Monasteries Ajahn Brahmavamso Vinaya is the name for the body of monastic rules and traditions that are binding on every Buddhist monk and nun. The Vinaya was established by the Buddha himself and is now preserved in written form, both in the ancient Indian languages and in English translation. With so many new people having come into the Society in the last few years, many of our members and friends know very little about the rules of discipline of the monastic community. It is important for the lay community to have an understanding of these rules to ensure that we do not behave in any way which is offensive to the Sangha nor which could create difficulty for them. We have therefore decided to reprint a series of articles in this and forthcoming newsletters, which were written by Ajahn Brahm a number of years ago. Ownership and Administration of Monasteries: In the time of the Buddha, when a lay Buddhist offered lands of buildings, or money for such things, to establish a monastery, they would dedicate it to The Sangha of the Four Quarters Present and Yet to Come. The Sangha of the four quarters present and yet to come means ALL properly ordained monks and nuns. This would include all legitimate Buddhist monks and nuns, of all nationalities and sects. Today it would probably include most Chinese Mahayana monks and nuns (bhiksus and bhiksunis) but it would exclude some Tibetan lamas and most Zen roshis, the married ones at least! Thus the owners of the monastery are the worldwide and "timewide" community of monks and nuns.
