03_sprecher_056439 (jk-t) 29/9/05 1:42 pm Page 629 Compassionate love for close others and humanity Susan Sprecher Illinois State University Beverley Fehr University of Winnipeg ABSTRACT A compassionate love scale was developed that can be used, in alternative forms, to assess compassionate or altruistic love for different targets (e.g., close others and all of humankind). Using three samples (total N = 529), the Compas- sionate Love scale was developed and piloted. Three studies (total N = 700) were then conducted to provide validation of the scale and to examine correlates of compassionate love. In support of our predictions, compassionate love was found to be associated positively with prosocial behavior, as directed both to close others and to all of humanity. Those who were more religious or spiritual experienced more compassionate love than those who were less religious or spiritual. Evidence was found that compassionate love is distinct from empathy. In the final study, we introduced a relationship-specific version of the Compassionate Love scale, and found that compassionate love for a specific close other was associated with the provision of social support for that person. This research has focused primarily on defining and operational- izing love and the examination of its predictors, correlates, and outcomes within romantic relationships (for a review, see S. S. Hendrick & Hendrick, 2000). Love for close others such as family and friends, for peripheral ties, and for all of humanity has generally not been a topic of investigation. -

Rosen, Ph.D. Rebecca Snyder, Ed.D. Maryann Woods-Murphy, Ed.D. Katherine Bassett, M.Ed. April 2017 We at the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY are most pleased to share with you the latest in our series of Research Reports. In this report, we focus on measures of social and emotional learning and their efficacy in educator evaluation. Using multiple approaches – literature review and three focus group panels – we examined what the field says about these measures and well as what expert teachers – State and National Teachers of the Year and Finalists for State Teacher of the Year think. I worked for twelve years at Educational Testing Service in the area of performance based assessment across a continuum of educator practice. One of the first maxims that I learned was: ‘…not everything that is important can be measured and not everything that can be measured is important.’ A second was ‘…we must not use assessment measures for pur- poses for which they have not been developed or validated.’ I also had the privilege of working with a team of expert research scientists, including Dr. Richard Roberts, to examine the efficacy of assessing social and emotional characteristics and their mallea- bility in educators. So, this study is of particular interest to me. Can we actually measure social and emotional characteristics, and, are they malleable? In other words, can we teach things like empathy, caring, persistence? Should we include measures of these characteristics in teachers as part of consequential evaluation? As expert educators, we deeply desire accountability measures. -

7 Deadly Sins: Lust In order to organize the way that we go through the 7 deadly sins, we will follow the pattern that Dante gave us in the Purgatory. In the poem, he is being led in a vision through purgatory and he sees it as a vast mountain, near the bottom are the worst sins and near the top the lesser sins. The penitents climb the mountain, leaving sins behind and eventually attaining heaven. We are actually going to go backwards, down the mountain, starting with the lesser sins and working our way to the more grave ones. The sin that, while still deadly, is considered the least, is Lust. Is Lust even a sin? (Obviously we know it is because it is one of the 7 deadly sins, but suspend belief with me for a moment.) It seems as though perhaps it is not a sin. After all, lust is not an action, it is not hurting anybody else, but it is a feeling. Typically, a sin is an action that we willfully carry out. We cannot be judged by what tempts us, after all, Our Lord was tempted in the desert for 40 days and we know that he never sinned. However, Our Lord also says this, “27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus teaches us how to take the law, the rules and precepts of the moral life, and inscribe those rules on our hearts. -

UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY REGION 10 1200 Sixth Avenue, Suite 900 Seattle, WA 98101-3140 OFFICE OF COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT Reply To: OCE-082 MEMORANDUM SUBJECT: Executing Risk-Based LUST Site Closures in R10 Indian Country FROM: Rob Rau, Ground Water Unit TO: Interested Parties Purpose and Statement of Problem: The purpose of this memo is to provide guidance in executing risk-based leaking underground storage tank (LUST) site closures in Region 10 Indian Country based on human health considerations. It is also intended to promote a consistent decision making process that can address unique site considerations and circumstances. Closing LUST sites that do not meet lookup cleanup concentrations may range from the use of formal risk assessment procedures with the imposition of institutional controls such as deed restrictions, to making a best professional judgment determination that a site does not pose an adverse health risk based on the evaluation of a conceptual site model developed from site-specific data. With this understanding, Region 10 recognizes that between a clean site closure and a comprehensive site-specific risk assessment there is a continuum of activities that could comprise a risk-based closure strategy. In general however, more robust and thorough scientific site evaluations are always preferred, and it is generally not appropriate to close a contaminated site that does not meet cleanup standards simply because it is “good enough” or because it is not practical to do more cleanup. Since few risk-based LUST site closures have been completed at EPA-lead sites, and many questions remain regarding technical implementation and policy decisions, this memo should be regarded as a “living” document, and reevaluated and updated regularly as additional policy decisions are made both regionally and nationally. -

Summary Zest is a positive trait reflecting a person’s approach to life with anticipation, energy, and excitement. In the present study, 9803 currently employed adult respondents to an Internet site completed measures of dispositional zest, orientation to work as a calling, and satisfaction with work and life in general. Across all occupations, zest predicted the stance that work was a calling (r ¼.39), as well as work satisfaction (r ¼.46) and general life satisfaction (r ¼.53). I comment on the enterprise of science and how scientists could well benefit from reciprocal interactions with theologians and religious leaders. Next, I discuss the evolution of social morality and the ways in which various aspects of social play behavior relate to the notion of “behaving fairly.” The contributions of spiritual and religious perspectives are important in our coming to a fuller understanding of the evolution of morality. I go on to discuss animal emotions, the concept of personhood, and how our special relationships with other animals, especially the companions with whom we share our homes, help us to define our place in nature, our humanness. -

We human beings are love dependent animals. This is apparent in that we become ill when we are deprived of love at whatever age. No doubt we live a culture in which we are frequently in war and kill each other on different rational grounds that justify our mutual total denial as human beings. But doing that does not bring to us happiness, or spiritual comfort and harmony. Love and aggression - are they polar features of our biology or, of our cultural human existence? Are we genetically aggressive animals that love occassionally, or are we loving animals that cultivate aggression culturally? Our purpose in this article is to maintain that we are loving animals that cultivate aggression in a cultural alienation that may eventually change our biology. To this end we shall speak about the following themes in short but basic statements: A) the systemic constitution and conservation of human identity; B) the origin and development of the self in the mother/child relations; C) the evolutionary origin of humanness in the conservation of neoteny and the expansion of the female sexuality; D) the biology of love. A) That we are living systems means that we are structure determined systems, that we operate at every moment according to our structure at that moment, and that nothing external to us can specify what happens in us as a result of our interactions in a medium. External agents can only trigger in us structural changes determined in us. -
